Or do you make bouquets from cut flowers (purchased or from your garden)? Both or none of the above?

I’m a gardener, and will buy flowers or make a bouquet from the garden on a whim. During the winter holidays, I bring greenery indoors. I’ve never really kept plants indoors - other than a geranium I bring inside before the first frost, and use to make cuttings for plants that will be moved out of doors when the weather permits. (I’ve kept the DNA of one geranium going for 5 years!)

I was ‘gifted’ a peace plant 3 months ago, and it hasn’t died yet. Today I bought a 4.5ft potted palm for my reading room. Hopefully I’ll be able to keep them alive, and maybe they will even thrive. Already thinking of repotting the palm (just one size up) because it seems root bound…

What are your thoughts on plants or bouquets in the home?

Hi YLF fam, and a belated happy Easter/happy spring/happy autumn, depending on where you are and what you celebrate!

Just a quick life update from me, mainly to try and articulate for myself what's in my head, but if you have the patience to read, thank you xx

I've mentioned a few times that the menopause/midlife struggle has been real, and I'm really in the soup tbh. My youngest heads for uni in the fall, my oldest will be halfway done his degree, and time marches on. I'm a few years into menopause and seem to being hit with a storm of fluctuating emotions. One day I'm fine, the next I'm crying, the next I'm so tense I feel my bones are being compressed by my muscles. With DD moving, I'm really feeling a lack of purpose and direction - completely without a compass. And the worst of it is - my life is so good. We are safe, we have stability, we are healthy, we have a loving family. I have every element of joy except the ability to feel it right now, which given the state of the world, seems absolutely hideous of me, but here I am. Anyways, I've just started with a therapist which I'm hoping will help, and I know everything will settle in time, but for now, I'm finding it hard.

Open to any advice, books, podcasts, things you did during your own difficult times that you might want to share. But mainly thanks for listening if you made it through. xoxo

We are doing a whole house window replacement and as part of that need to think about new window treatments. On the way out are 40 year old windows and the 40 year old aluminum mini-blinds that were all the rage in the 80s. On the way in, better windows, but for the rest, no idea!

I saw pictures of "zebra blinds" and thought they were just stuck on stripes, but now I've seen some IRL and the adjustment from half sheer to solid was so easy that I'm considering them. I'm also a little bit interested in wide wood blinds.

What do you have? Would you get the same thing again or change it? What are the pros and cons? What is the stylish window wearing these days?

The only goals I have are: 1) Easy to clean and 2) Able to fully close for privacy and blocking light. That's all I know so far. I've never been a fan of actual curtains because they are such fussy dust catchers.

Hubby and I are leaving for Malta at the end of a April for a much-needed week long get away.

Has anyone been to Malta? What's the weather like during this time. Not sure how to dress as it is in the Mediterranean sea and early Spring.

We haven't had book thread in a while, so I thought it might be fun to start one. I am a promiscuous reader and read anything and everything, some of which is admittedly pretty trashy. Right now I'm listening to an audiobook called Dungeon Crawler Carl which is a sci-fi story about aliens killing most of the people on Earth and putting the rest of them in a real-life video game/reality TV type contest. Crazy and fun. It's a series of, I think, eight books so I have a lot to look forward to.

I recently read a book that really knocked my socks off: The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward. It was billed as a (supernatural?) thriller but then it took a surprising turn. I won't spoil it but I will say I loved it.

A friend of mine from my Rotary Club writes cozy mysteries about walking tours in England and I have enjoyed those. The first one is A Deadly Walk in Devon by Nicholas George.

What are you reading these days?

Men Who Have it All is one of my favorite Facebook pages--basically, they take any statement commonly made about women and flip it to men. It is always an LOL moment for me, but for whatever reason, when I share these memes, none of my friends or family react.

The page's creators do have a book--Kindle and physical, that I plan on getting.

Just some musings about where the struggle with body image has landed for me in middle age.

I won’t go into my whole history with body image and weight. It’s not outside the usual for women of my age, culture and body type. Nor is this going to be about my diet or exercise habits.

At some point I realized that what I’m doing isn’t so much about working to reach some perfected state of mind but just an active daily practice. I’m not at some magical place where I dance around naked loving my 52 year old body. I just live in it and practice the following on a daily and long term basis…

- actively engage with and follow social media with a diversity of ages and body types enjoying their unique style (THANK YOU ANGIE for providing this forum and modelling this for us!)

- actively avoid content that shows a tendency to verbalize hatred for any aspect of their own or other women’s bodies. “Our bodies, Ourselves” - I can no longer separate the two and misogyny hurts. I don’t engage because their views are not my business, I just avoid.

- I comment positively on friends’ and family members’ achievements, style, hair, hobbies and interests but not their bodies. Frankly, I don’t notice most people’s weight fluctuations much anyway. Who cares? I do notice with my daughters but say nothing unless they are bringing up a need for new clothes and then it’s a neutral ‘maybe your size has changed, let’s go shopping and see’, never ‘you’ve lost or gained weight’

- I don’t engage much with diet or body talk from my friends. It’s situational - if a friend wants to go on about her new devotion to protein or avocado for health reasons I’m polite enough. I have a huge interest in food and cooking as a source of both pleasure and self care/care for others, so I do talk about that with friends who share my interest. Avocado you say? Delicious on toast with some tomato and salt!

I think those are the main points. Shout out to all the many fab ladies here who post outfits and are positive or just neutral about women’s bodies, and of course, Angie for providing the forum for it.

I’ve had the burgundy LE puffer for 5 years this month, and just reattached to hood! Wore sweatpants and two sweaters (Finds) underneath.

Apparently a cold couple of weeks are forecast and more snow on the way.

Last week I was off walking the Milford Track - a 33.5 mile/54 km hike in the Fiordland National Park. We did it with friends but were the only four NZers in a group of 50 dominated by Americans (in numbers with 30 from different parts of the USA). Also Canadians, Australians, Korean, Dutch and English so it was a wonderful multicultural group. We did the walk in a guided fashion with food provided and lodge accommodation rather than huts. Some people say it is the best walk in the world - it’s very famous - and it was stunning! We did a side walk to the Sutherland Falls, 5th highest waterfall in the world.

It was a lot of fun, hard walking at times especially on the downhill and I highly recommend it. We got a range of weather and managed a cold water swim but a spot of rain meant the waterfalls were raging.

As promised for those interested.

My SIL is a chef at a great London restaurant. She asked for this recipe, which outshone all the others she tried. The restaurant is using it. Enough said :)

You need to get a specific ingredient off Amazon. Custard powder. See Find.

It's a temperamental dessert to make. You need to make it the day before you are serving it. It has to set and infuse.

Do not substitute ingredients! This is not for dairy-free or gluten-free diets. Be exact with measurements and method.

The recipe is on the blog. It was an April Fool's Day post 12 years ago, but the recipe is pukka (authentic):

Use a large pie tin with removable sides.

I've made a few since we moved back into our remodeled loft, since it's a requested dessert by dear friends! Exhibit A is the one I made a few weeks ago. And our new Scandi kitchen has a turquoise backsplash.

Feel free to ask questions. Hope it works out. xo

I don't like running. I am reasonably in shape, so I can sort of jog/walk for awhile if I need to, but after straight running for a couple minutes, I don't feel good. Irritable, like a kid who wants to stop.

But what if I WANT to run? I like that it is outdoors, and it is cardio, and a way to get out in the morning. And no, I don't want to walk.

I am just curious what it is for those who ENJOY running. For some it feels like freedom, meditation--but I don't know why.

I am also curious about those who don't really love it, but force themselves to do it.

I enjoy dancing, swimming, walking....and the IDEA of running. I do want to do it, even if just a little. I want that cardio, that oxygenation, a little burn. Any advice or motivation for someone like me?

I picked up a large bag of almond flour in order to make a new chocolate cake recipe for DS#2’s birthday December 27th. I’ve made the recipe a twice (!!) since then due to popular request. I’m kind of impressed that a piece of chocolate cake can have 7g protein! LOL! Also, the fact that the recipe is gluten free seems to agree with my ever more fussy GI system.

Anyone else use almond flour in their cooking?

Do you have any good recipes to share?

Hi all, have made this Off-topic so it can only be read by logged in people. I just watched the documentary on Netflix this week and found it really intriguing. I thought there was so much interesting content like how her fashion business was losing money so badly in about 2016 when she needed to bring in a business partner and restructure it, reducing lots of costs like $70K a year on plants! I was actually liking her by the end of the documentary when I didn’t really have an opinion before as to whether I “liked” her or not, just knew of her as a celebrity since the 90s from the Spice Girls which my daughters were into at the time.
You probably know that I do not buy “designer” clothing, I suppose that term is loaded but I mean the internationally recognised luxury brands like Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Gucci, etc. I buy some NZ designer items but generally on sale, like my several Sabatini items were from the Designer Garage Sale (ha! they mean NZ designers) or the factory outlet. It’s a personal discomfort from my upbringing by strict religious parents who also lived through the Great Depression (born 1920 and 1922 respectively) so I am not criticising buying designer. It’s personal to me. So I would not be buying Victoria Beckham clothing whether or not I “liked” her or even liked the clothing. I just thought she had made impressive progress when she was extremely criticised in trying to get into the fashion industry. Some of the clothes looked nice and some a bit odd to my eye, but co-incidentally (since I am reading about the new Wuthering Heights movie and intend to see it) Margot Robbie is wearing 2 Victoria Beckham outfits to promote the new movie.
Interested if others have seen this documentary and what you thought, please be kind! Cheers Jenni

Hi all.

Good news: my ultrasound showed a cyst which was aspirated right away. The radiologist told me she thought it was most likely a cyst due to the shape and size of the lump and that most cysts are usually benign. They would send out a sample to the lab just to make sure.
However, I would be getting mammograms and ultrasounds in the future as I do have smalls cysts on both breasts.

The reasons for cysts can be caffeine (I only drink 2 cups in the morning), hormonal changes, and /or HRT. As a doctor, she said she wasn't going to give her caffeine any time soon. I agreed.

Anyway, this news was a load off of mind since there are other personal family issues going on (i.e. elderly mom). Thank you all for your support. You are amazing women and I couldn't be more thankful in knowing all of you.

I understand that political discussions are not encouraged here. I am not trying to start a debate nor am I interested in one. Minneapolis is our closest large US city, and one that Winnipeggers consider a sister city. We are similar in politics, size and sensibility. I have been there many times . Everyone I know is horrified, scared and feeling helpless for our US friends there. Please know your Canadian supporters are a huge group . We do care.

So, I fell and broke my right collar bone on Thursday. And yes, I am right-handed!

I may be scarce to comment on the forum for a while, since dictation is slow and annoying, but will pop in to read as I can. For now I a listening to my own cat and to recordings of cat purrs to speed up bone healing.

I am so mad -- it is my first real broken bone (if you don't count the hairline fractures to my thumb at ag 7). Worse yet, I got it on my way to take a WIW photo!! Bag strap fell got tangled in my feet and I tripped on it and fell headlong down the stairs. Banged my head, too, but fortunately. no concussion.

:(

Hi everyone,

It's been quite a while since I actively participated in the forum, and I'm glad to turn the page on 2025.

In March 2024 I was diagnosed with endometrial carcinoma (a form of ovarian cancer). I had two surgeries, followed by 5 months of chemotherapy, and another month of radiation therapy in January 2025.

With chemotherapy came the hair loss, which I found reasonably ok to deal with. I had a short pixie to begin with, and managed with nice hats. My hair has all grown back now, and I'm sporting a short pixie again. Other side effects of chemo, like the extreme fatigue, I found much harder to deal with, and as a result I struggled with depression for quite some time.

I'm through the worst of that now, and health-wise everything was looking good during my last check-up in December. A huge relief! Hopefully that will continue to be the case and I'm looking forward to a much better and much more positive 2026. (there's already some brilliantly fun things in the works!)

I've missed YLF and all you Fabbers, and hope everyone is doing well.

Hi All,

If you are thinking of donating clothing in the New Year, may I recommend your local Dress for Success location?

I started volunteering for my local group last year and have seen first hand the impact these donations have. Volunteering also educated me more on the types of clothing needed. While there are needs for interview clothes, many women need clothing after they land a position, which might be in an office, or in a school, or in a more casual environment, so jeans, tops and toppers are always needed.

Thanks for your consideration. Here’s a link to find your local group. https://dressforsuccess.org/affiliate-list/

Hello my lovely YLF'ers. It's been way too long.

I was hoping to come back in the New year with some good news or with high spirits, but alas it doesn't seem that way. I recently had a mammogram back in December, and unfortunately I recieved dreaded call-back for an ultrasound which was done yesterday. The ultrasound showed a 2mm mass on my right breast. The radiologist did say the mass was small and had smooth edges so that was good news, but I have to get a biopsy which is scheduled for next week.

I'm not sure how to feel or what to say. I'm just flabbergasted that this could happen to me because breast cancer does not run my family. From what I've read, 85% of breast is cancer is not genetic so I'm just a random person who is unlucky enough to have to go through this.

I'm trying to stay positive since we don't know if this is cancerous, but gosh there are so many thoughts in my head right now. Thank you for letting me vent. I just need to keep myself busy for the next few weeks.

Thank you all for listening and will send updates soon.

Best,

So it’s January and for a number of years I’ve done a challenge to wear my clothing-ie get dressed and not repeat outfits and document them. And I’ve been wondering if I should do that again this year. And if I’m honest, I’m not sure I have the energy this year

2025 kicked my butt. For those who don’t know, I work in retail and the year started with uncertainty and tariffs. It seemed like a never ending cycle of new and different costs, and so it was an unending cycle of updating and forecasting costs, sales and margins. It felt like retail was finally finding our new normal post pandemic, and then this. Honestly I’ve been in retail for almost 40 years and this was just the most unexpected chaotic thing, and it feels like it’s going to drag into 2026. On top of that one of the people who works for me went out on a unexpected disability in February so for almost 5 months before I was allowed to back fill the position, I was doing both her job and mine. And we had 2 small reorganizations in there was well. Let’s just say, it was a year, and leave it there

Between WFH, the current fashion trends/cycle, and my general basic uniform(Ish) dressing has made me feel less inclined to post here, but I want to get back to this fabulous community and back to fashion and style as an outlet for my creativity.

Sorry this was long and rambling.

I guess I just wanted to explain my absence and say I missed you all and looking forward to seeing what 2026 brings

I am the middle of 3 girls. My big sister was older by 5 years, and by the time I was 8 she was the main baby sitter for me and for "her bratty little sister." (Little sister's description of her young self.)

Her husband of 66-years died late last year, and since then the three of us became very close. We live too far apart to visit often, and well, there was a lot going on during this last year. When I found out she was in the hospital in July, I went to see her. I was shocked at how skinny she was. She admitted she had been losing weight since last September.

I'm sure she knew what she had, but she didn't tell us until the tests were conclusive. Still, all of us thought she had more time. She refused radiation and chemo, and said she was at peace with what was happening. I wanted her to fight, fight, fight . . . but she made her own choice. She went into hospice. I visited her one last time in late November. I intended to stay an hour, but she felt better and we talked intensely for two.

She died quietly two weeks later.

One day she said that some people in her place would get busy and clean out their closets and organize their papers, but nope, she wasn't going to do that. I have to smile when I remember this. I miss her.

Goodbye Big Sister.

Yesterday a video popped up randomly in my instagram feed about the nineteen Buddhist monks and their dog doing a Walk For Peace from Texas to Washington D.C. Have you heard about this? Watching it, I found myself unexpectedly moved to tears, not only touched by their commitment, but also the openhearted reception they are getting along the way. They opened my heart too! Their peace and stillness are so palpable. I'll share the one from my instagram feed, but there are SO many videos everywhere. (hope this is okay to share here...I know it's way off topic, but thought we could all use a little benign innocence of these monks)

Still looking through the last post--thanks for the responses. Most people said they preferred natural or polished nails to an acrylic nail.

And it got me thinking how easy and accessible nail color/finishes are. You can put a lot of time in, but you can also slap on a color for a couple of days, if that's all you want.

My question is--does the cost of polish/finish matter to you at all?

As a person who much reveres the world of beauty, arts and crafts, I do believe there is probably a quality difference between a $50 bottle and a $2 bottle. But at the practical level for myself, I am just as happy with a cheap drugstore brand.

One notable difference I see is that the pricier companies tend to come out with hit colors before everyone else. When mint was a sensation, that was first in fashion spreads, and only seemed to be made by Chanel, etc. Or Urban Decay, back in the 90s, had every vampy shade of the rainbow.
