Hello.

I really liked the colors for outfit #1 in this post Outfit Formula: Slim Skirt, with the yellow top, black skirt, and dark brown dressy boots.

I don't have any of these items, so here's my recreation with: yellow pullover, black trousers, and burgundy boots which are the closest to dark brown that I have. I forgot to include my matching burgundy bag in the photos but it's in the finds.

I always enjoy the outfit formula posts for a little inspiration, thank you Angie!

Thanks for looking!

I am suddenly drawn to Michael Kors' design, which I always knew was elegant, yet seemed deemed for women unlike me--the Guess set, the Bebe set. Large sunglasses, sumptuous overcoats, and heeled boots, even in icy snow.

I am drawn to him right now even more than Calvin Klein, or the perennially impressive Ralph Lauren. I don't know if it's just me, but he seems somehow "overlooked" among American sportswear. His purses are reasonably priced, colorful and tasteful, and yet somehow don't command nearly as much attention as Coach.

I watched the recent runway to see what drew me. The clothing is confident, not fussy, yet still special. Perhaps a little Italian flavor, like a sleek sports car. I like that there is still a deep connection to classic style--burgundy shows up in silk dresses and wool overcoats, but not in something crazy, like macrame. Camel is almost presented as a bright rather than a neutral. I mean, if it's a power color, why not wear it head to toe?

What are your thoughts on Michael Kors?

I love Everything But the Girl--80s/90s pop/jazz/electronic duo with smooth vocals and breezy mood. One of the first bands that introduced me to the idea that good music did not have to resemble Led Zeppelin.

I don't know them well past a few songs, but this one popped up just now on YouTube music. I enjoyed the video as fashion inspiration as well--slip dresses, colorful dress shirts, very intentional choices in eyewear and blazers. Backed up by historic apartments with vintage pieces and lots of sunshine.

The song is "Rollercoaster," 1994.

I have hung on to this cardigan because it has such a pretty drape. It is lightweight, so it is good for those odd spring days where you're not really sure whether it's warm or cold. The catch with the long cardigan is that I require a longer jacket.

Here's another WIW, which I wore to get my haircut. We are calling it a shaggy pixie. I love the lilac velvet barrel pants. So soft, so comfy.

Also, some flowers and a turtle, because I went to the Garfield Park Conservatory last week when it was so gray and dreary.

Are you watching Love Story on FX? I haven't started it yet - quite honestly, I have a very rudimentary level of competence with our tv so I need to get my DH to get it set up for me. I can find Apple Fitness, NHL games (but now I'm sick of the NHL and our President- loving goalie in particular ) , and that's about it . There's no way DH is interested in this so it will be watched on my own time , lol.

Anyways, when the first test wardrobe shots were released, I cringed and there was no way I was going to watch what looked like a fashion hot mess. But , I gather the show runner got the message, so to speak and has fixed that part up. The actors still don't do it for me - especially her- , but I'll need to watch to see how it all came together.

I admit to being a fan of CBK's style and only dreamed of having a body and hair like hers that seemed necessary to dress the way she did. I bought Sunita Nair's book about her when it was first released and have pored over it a few times. I love the photography and the style analysis . I will also admit all of the current buzz about CBK has renewed my interest in one of my favourite items: the cropped flared jean/pant. As recently as last summer, I felt over the whole look. I had worn it for years and years, but silhouettes had changed a lot in recent years and I bought into the wide and baggy, and barrel silhouettes. I fortunately didn't get rid of my kick flare jeans and pants (thank god, as I'm usually a crazy declutter-er) and cannot wait to wear them again . I even ordered two more pair of flare jeans in a shorter length ;). It looks so fresh and modern to my eye, which was accustomed to the long and loose and barrel silhouettes, which to be honest, don't look that great on me.

I wish I could do the white shirt or black turtleneck look with jeans, but I don't share that same lanky tall physique which makes those looks work. I do feel influenced/excited by flat sandals, loafers , quality statement jewellery, and this sort of classic look . Kind of excited to see where it leads me. Calvin Klein forever ! Even her makeup has me interested in changing things up : no eye makeup and a blotted darker lip.

Thoughts about Bessette - Kennedy and the current buzz ?

Well, thanks to Angie's inspiring post about doing the tedious things first, I've managed to sort through my Holding Zone and find things to donate. I added the finds so I can remember what I let go. Some things were never or hardly worn like the four short sleeve sweaters from BR which I could not make work for me and the tees which were too tight. The green sweatshirt was uncomfortable and two more sweatshirts, not pictured, were also uncomfortable. The mixed media dress and the white boots were hardly worn, too. Thanks for reading the tedious recap of my tedious sort.

2025

It was a pretty good year for my wardrobe. I felt it worked well for me across 4 seasons, which is a HUGE accomplishment. I didn’t always have as much fun with it as I would have liked but that was ok! I bought a LOT, from finding HEWIS and replacements to “just wanted it”. I also made some mistakes, mostly of the “it’s so inexpensive I’ll give it a try” variety or duplication in a second color that didn't get worn. I also did a bunch of donations.

2026

I’m going to set goals month to month. For January overall I’m going to focus mostly on some health and other non-fashion goals.

These are some ideas for fashion goals through the year:
- Thinking about change of hairstyle.
- Color: “less black”. Black and dark/light grey are still core neutrals that I love, but I want to wear less of them, or add more light colors to black basics etc.
- I’d like to have more fun, more joy with my wardrobe. But avoiding a mantra or word.
- I continue to be frustrated at the mismatch between what fits me vs. the styles I want to wear. I want more edgy, boho, glam, and less classic, masculine, “arty”. The only action I've come up with so far is to try some new retailers and be willing to spend more per item.
- I want to spend less time overall on wardrobe/fashion. During January I plan to figure out at least 3 things I will do toward this goal. ANY progress I make in January will be a win!
- open to a few trends but mostly don't care for the ones that have been around the last few years.

Favorite purchases of 2025 (not all workhorses ... and a clear pattern of Anthro items!)
BR cashmere sweater (Thanks Suz for the reco)
Rebecca Minkoff crossbody x2 (one everyday size, one smaller)
DKNY basic black overcoat (HEWI/Replacement)
Anthro/Maeve checked scarf
Anthro Carys Sweater x2
Brioso Sandals (thanks Angie for the reco)
Dolce Vita sneakers
Karl Lagerfeld Bomber jacket
TJMax/Republic Navy/White striped sweater
TJmaxx Dk Brown faux seude pants
TJMaxx Philosopy Brown leopard collared cardigan (this is very similar to an Anthro/Pilcro one)
Thrifted trio of LLBean tees that fit perfectly once I hemmed them
Coach boots – I know Coach quality is good, but I don't care for any obvious logos, their classic styles can be a little dull, and the trendy ones don't interest me. HOWEVER.....these boots are great looking, comfortable, grippy, and warm. They were an unexpected find in TJMAxx. Also showing the matching Coach bag bought last year which was my first lesson in "Coach CAN work for me". Both items have a section of coated canvas with a dark brown/black pattern of the Coach "C" motif but it's so subtle that it's hardly noticeable. :-)

Hello all lovely forum members,

It is mid January now and tomorrow I have my youngest son turning 21! Wow.

I wrapped up 2025 a couple of weeks back and have done some thinking since this time. I enjoy fashion, style and wardrobe management and find it fun and relaxing. Our business is fairly stressful even on the smoothest weeks (aviation, workflow, staffing, property matters etc) and I work with my husband. I like thinking about clothes, outfits for events, and trying to get 30 wears from most things I buy. My wardrobe hovers between 90-100 pieces (clothing and shoes) plus about 40 pieces of activewear and gear.

I don't dress especially similarly to my peers here - I don't stand out as being different but I march to my own tune. Sometimes it works and sometimes it does not - that doesn't faze me.

In 2026 my style words are

Bold - I like my outfits to be strong in one way or another. It might be colour or silhouette or via an accessory. I don't achieve it always but that's an intention.

Elegant - I need the reminder to keep up the polish and professional edge. I don't want to lean too casual.

Unfussy - this replaces breezy. I simply won't wear things that are fussy on me. This might be too many layers, or with a small pattern, or a top that does not sit nicely. I like longer lines and simple shapes. I don't wear much jewelry either.

Sporty - Angie's suggestion. I am no great sportsperson but I am active and ourdoorsy, I like watching sport and I like participating. Walking, the gym, yoga, cycling and pickleball are my main activities. I love swimming in lakes and in the ocean. I am a Kibbe Natural (probably Flamboyant) and whilst my hair is not natural I like it to look as though it could be.

My moniker has been Grown Up Charlies Angel - I love 1970s style and the attitude of being ready for anything whether a cocktail party or a chase or going undercover. I don't think I look like any of the Angels (1970s tv show). But maybe does not resonate as strongly now. I don’t want to force something but am open to ideas.

In 2026 I really want to keep on going as I have. I am mindful of the following:
- I have big toe arthritis and so I have exited a few pairs of shoes, it's hard to predict what will work and what won't so shopping in person is often better.
- I am trying to shop bricks and mortar where I can to support retailers here. I want exceptions to be rare. We do have local options and I like to shop when I travel as well so that’s another option.
- I want to keep trying second hand - I had good success last year with second hand pieces and this is both fun and a way to be experimental.
- avoiding muddy and muted pastel colours. I am in the mood for lighter and clearer colours. But neutrals remain important to me and I am open to a variety of these. Black, Navy, Caramel, white, denim, ecru and the odd chocolate piece. I also wear charcoal grey although mostly in lounge and hiking gear.

My shopping list so far is
- light weight puffer
- black boots
- straight dark denim jeans
- replacement white sneakers (what is modern here?)

My do not buy list is
- heels
- patterned blouses
- summer dresses
- any new active wear is on a one-in, one out basis.

I will attach some photos of outfits of mine that I have enjoyed recently or from the archives of looks I enjoy. It is a bit eclectic but I like something about all these looks even if the later ones on the list comprise pieces I don’t own any more.

Thanks for reading and look forward to your ideas.

Carol on "Word and Color of the Year"

WORD
I actually sat a couple hours meditating on this the other day, and kept gravitating towards science words like biota, calcification and grotto. They were all great, but a stretch to find meaning. I knew I needed a simple word, and so I chose particle...at least for now. To me that means being a tiny part of a whole, almost insignificant but with absolute ramifications on the whole. Though it makes me kind of uncomfortable, it is good for me to think of myself as a tiny part of the mess of humanity, with me being responsible to it, and it being responsible to me. I spent too much of my life as a rugged individualist--feeling overly special, but also different.

COLOR
I got an image of an Indonesian gold headdress, and I knew that was the color, though it is really not a color--more of a process. It is gold leaf or gilt, and appears throughout history and cultures. I suppose the nearest color would be yellow gold. Here I am showing Indonesian arts, Byzantine mosaic, and an unlabeled photo--perhaps European Renaissance or Baroque period. It is not so much decadent as transcendental--often associated with religion, it reminds us of the divinity that is just on the other side of the threshold.

They used to gild picture frames hundreds of years ago in Europe, and that would make you look more closely at the scene inside, spend a few more minutes on it.

If I gilded something in my house right now--the couch, the water filter pitcher, my purse--it would cease to look like an everyday object and instead remind me that the world is truly special.

This kind of gold will remind me in 2026 it is not all about practicality and to-do lists. It is just as important to be in the moment, acknowledge rituals, allow for divinity, etc. And remind me to stick to goals that are wholly impractical, like reading long, bucket-list literature.

I’ve been giving some thought to style words, and I’ve come up with romantic, polished and directional.
I chose these words because:

I like fancy florals and faux fur. And pink.

I always like to feel soignée, at home or outside

I follow trends and select from a few of the most current every season

As for an actual moniker, I often used the phrase “fierce intellectual gentlewoman” as a means of deterring the unworthy on dating apps.

I thought I could combine these two trains of thought into something like romantic intellectual gentlewoman.

Any thoughts?

I had started off with “extra” as my word of the year, because I’ve been trying to amp up my brightness during the dark time of the year. Exuberant is an even better choice. I’m not a tremendously outgoing person so I find it fun to let my clothes do the extroversion for me. Also, I’d decided on raspberry as my color. Then, this afternoon my daughter and I were out at the Humble Mug tea shop in Brattleboro, Vermont. They have a different set of oracle or tarot cards at each table, It’s quite charming. I drew the peony card (it said something like grace, romance and abundance, all of which sound good to me), so I’ve decided I need to expand to two shades of pink.

Carol on "Male fashion influences?"

I should probably think this through a little bit, about who are really mine...
but do you have any male fashion influences?

I know this is just a smattering, but here's who I've come up with:

1. Johnny Depp, whose shabby chic really goes beyond a surface level. Encouraging me to really be aware of the quality of vintage, etc.

2. Deion Sanders, former NFL pro, and coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, my hometown.
I was immediately impressed with his gold sunglasses, which became such a hit, he collaborated with the company. I can also see he treats bright white with such intentionality. (I will be ordering his sunglasses.)

3. Pharrell Williams, musician, producer and now head designer for men's fashion for Louis Vuitton. I don't know how he specifically influences ME, but he is so current, with such a sharp sense of dandyism, that he is good to pay attention to.

4. Larry David, creator, writer, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Seinfeld. Between his "just out of the package" gym t-shirts and drab blazers, he seems to have been one of the leaders of smart casual. White Dad sneakers never looked so good!
A lesson in comfort, consistency, and a closet full of neutrals. From him I am reminded the power of sticking with a few things...and that normcore looks good if you celebrate it.

I've never done this challenge before but a word and a color came to mind quickly so I'm giving it a go!

My word for the year is FOCUS. I'm constantly responding to distractions, in all areas of my life, and it needs to change. Social media, doomscrolling, clothes shopping on my iPhone while I'm "watching TV", ...and many more. To make this change really happen, I need to define specific things I'm going to "track" to confirm that I'm making the changes. The weekly iPhone report of daily hours spent on the iPhone is one of them (hmm... I should check data usage too). And specifically for fashion/wardrobe, I've got a pretty good working wardrobe and don't need much. I'm going to focus on shopping from list of wants/needs at stores/brands that have a reasonably good chance of working for me both for fit and style.

My color is "less black". Black and grey are still my key dark neutrals (along with denim) but I want to wear more lighter colors and more earth tones. I'm not going to measure this one too carefully :-)

I love a good YouTube channel that is relaxing, but informative. And often I am tempted by the "how to be French," "how to eat French," "how to dress French" channels. But they can be redundant, recommending the same types of clothing or tips again and again.

I just found ParisianVibe, which has a very editorial, magazine feel. Polished videos take you through tapestried, cushioned apartments over tree-lined streets. Women have very specific ideas about how to use vintage stores, and the wardrobes to show for it.

This is an interesting channel, hosted by Parisians themselves. Very fun--let me know what you think.

“ Once it seemed that working out your taste muscle was part of growing up and defining yourself. But over time, the desire to look good, the willingness to care about appearance, to be fashionable, became taboo for a large swath of the population, Ms. Pearlstein said. The people who cared about aesthetics cared deeply. Everyone else? They lost their appetite to be discerning. A sameness descended. It didn’t happen abruptly, as if we stepped off a cliff into an abyss of blah. It happened incrementally.”

There is so much controversy about the Cloud Dancer, the 2026 Pantone’s choice of color for 2026.
White (cream) is one of my core colors and I enjoy wearing it. The conversion about whites actually inspired me to check my 2025 purchase. And I found that I bought only two cream items - a shirt and a replacement pair of jeans. Feels like it’s time to put my attention towards adding whites. A white summer dress and a top have been on my wish list for a while. A cream tote would be great, too. So, I support the Payton’s choice :)
I don’t really crave color in my wardrobe aside from some weeks at the end of a winter. But I like to add a few items here and there. I purchased some brown and burgundy items this year. The rest was in neutral colors and black. Maybe because I got more color this year, I don’t feel inspired to add more. At least for now. I will reassess in the summer.

Have you thought about your color of 2026? This word will help me to set up some goals or intentions for the year to come.

I’m changing my style a bit. I missed tailored clothes and added a couple of blazers. It’s been probably 7-8 years since my previous purchase. Classic cut tops worn with baggy jeans is another silhouette I enjoyed this year.
I want to play into juxtaposition of casual and formal more.

I want to be inspired and determined to edit my wardrobe to reflect where I am going in my fashion journey.

I want to add more special or more refined (to me) pieces.

I want to use my clothes better.

I hope to be refined in the next year :)

Though I just realized my title is going to maybe not really adjacent to my post, or err new inspiration. Something like that…
Anyways on the navel gazing post (but not really, because menopause body did what).
I’m trying to slowly emerge from isolation slug mode. I recently went on a trip to Singapore, then the main focus was a photo trip to Cambodia. I am trying to rekindle my creative side, it took nearly 10 of the 12 days of the photo trip for something to click (pun kinda there). I’ll try to post more about that later in Off Topic.
On the long ass flight to Singapore I ended up watching Cruella. I realize it’s more than a few years old, plus the last 5 years don’t count, right. I freaking loved the costuming, like seriously freaking awesome. So I’m trying to think of using it a stylist springboard (minus the garbage dress, it’s a bit impractical and a lot flammable). I need to get out of scrubs and sweats (even fancy sweats).
But the fashion world, as many will notice is bleak out there, and not in the pensive goth looking over moonlit crashing waves. Especially for plus size.
I’ve been giving away more of my clothes, even the beloved Isabel Marant navy blazer, which fits my friend perfectly. I need to dress for the body I have now (I hear Angie nodding in my head).
This will definitely be a work in progress. I recently discovered Dressed in LaLa
https://dressedinlala.com
They have all sorts of overly dramatic, wildly clashing prints and color. And yeah that’s not Cruella, but uhh…dramatic, that’s it.
I brought a few of their pieces to on wear on my trip. Decided that I’m go full whackadoodle with my colored hair and crazy clothes. But the heat and humidity, well the dripping sauna look hasn’t hit the mainstream, yet. So now I’m back in much cooler climes.
Crap this was a lot. If you’ve read this far, thanks.
I’m going to try and post a bit more here.
Adding proof of life pics, with phone.

I bought two pair of fleece lined tights / leggings, the kind that say they look like sheer hosiery but feel like fleece in winter. One pair is a lighter “nude for me” color and the other a translucent black color. The attraction is to get more wear from my skirts that I love.

They feel warm as they advertise but styling them seems tricky. The models in the ads wear micro skirts, not practical for me. They are not quite sheer hosiery but they are not opaque tights, either. They make my legs look a little heavier and seem not quite as defined.

I checked this forum but there was only one post about them from someone who wore them on a winter vacation in Europe. Does anyone here have experience with fleece lined “wanna be sheer” hosiery? How do you recommend I style my outfit with them to look its best?

A bit embarrassed to share, but...

a few weeks ago, Jessica wrote a post about unconventional uses for belts. I thought of my one true waist belt, a simple black number with gold hardware, and wondered how it would look against my bare skin.

So here I tried it with a pencil skirt, lace-up heels, a simple bralette, and my new Chevron blazer. Truth be told, I would like to dress like this all the time, but don't for various reasons, especially foot comfort. Also truth be told, I WOULD wear this out, and might be able to find a reason at some point.

A titan of the 20th century art world in Europe and the United States, with her own museum in Venice, Italy (Peggy Guggenheim Collection), and niece of Solomon R. Guggenheim, founder of the Guggenheim Museum in New York City.

Firmly entrenched in bohemian societies on both continents, she used her legacy to promote the avant-garde. Sometimes that involved wearing items designed by artists, like the A. Calder earrings, and the E. Melcarth butterfly sunglasses.

My favorite looks were earlier--her skirt suits best of all. There was something Grecian there--the kind of weighty fabric and cuts worn by Martha Graham with sandals. Severe, but unassuming. Commanding attention, but not menswear. Even her evening gowns seemed designed for working (networking)--simple shifts with just enough jewelry to identify her wealth--hair swept back so the eye draws up to her face.

Curious is that all these photos look as if they were posed. They probably were, but don't feel so. You can see how still she sits, like a catalog model receding into her own planes and torque. Respectfully waiting for the right shot, so that the vital elements of her costume and surroundings may be captured.

I wish I could go to this, but I don’t think I’ll make it there before it closes. https://www.fitnyc.edu/museum/...../index.php

“When you picked out an outfit this morning, did it feel like free will? Was it a series of deliberate choices that made it desirable to venture out into the world wearing said garment? Or was your decision a response to deeper subconscious forces? What if the choices we make about clothes are not our own conscious choices to make?

That’s the premise of a new exhibition in New York. Dress, Dreams and Desire: Fashion and Psychoanalysis, at the Fashion Institute of Technology, that makes the case that clothes are the “deep surface”, the “changeable, renewable second skin”, that outside the merely practical act as a facade for far more than we know.

As Dr Valerie Steele, the curator known as “the Freud of fashion”, puts it, fashion “communicates our unconscious desires and anxieties, with none of us fully aware of the messages we send.” From her perspective, “far from being superficial, fashion exposes people’s desires and anxieties like a psychosomatic rash.” (From the Guardian)

We all want pieces with longevity - something that lasts that we want to wear, year after year. Not all classics are like that, shifts in fashion can make some classic items not feel as current. But sometimes our classics can be just wonderful...

What is?

1) Your oldest classic piece still in rotation
2) Your most worn classic piece still in rotation
3) Something newer that you hope becomes a classic

For me:

1) My oldest piece still worn is this black merino turtleneck sweater. It sat in the ski bag for a few years unworn, but is back in rotation now. It dates from 2008. I didn't track wears for all of the time but I think it is well over 60 wears - it is showing some wear now and will probably only last one more year.
2) My most worn is my Veronica Maine wool coat purchased in 2022 - 95 wears to date. Thanks Brooklyn who spotted as an option for me!! I do have some jeans with more wears and denim is a classic, but I think the coat is even more of one.
3) My newest purchase that I hope becomes a classic is this black Harris Tapper blazer. I have worn it four times to date.

Over to you - what are your classic pieces that have served you well, and will continue to do so?

Carol on "What can be done with graphic tees?"

I see some of you wearing graphic tees in your posts, and it suddenly hits me as a good look.

They are always something that has "happened" to me, but I never sought out as an element of style. Perhaps I went to a concert, or enjoyed a certain illustrator. Then I might wear that one day, but the rest of the time I wore plain shirts. And I never considered much how the tee design fit in with the rest of the outfit.

I always did like tees that came from concerts, or museum shows, or had some other meaning. I detested the ones sold at big box retailers that said stuff like "summer girl" or "don't talk to me until I have coffee."

Now I see that they all have a purpose, though. Graphic tees, in general, bring...a casualness? Conversation, for the really good ones. As a category, they are much different than regular tees, and I need help figuring out how.

Do you wear them? A lot?
What are your thoughts on these tees?

Bonus question: anyone ever made silkscreen tees for a band?

P.S. This is a category of clothing where I really might splurge, because the designs can be so cerebral. If I went to a Pink Floyd concert and there was a t-shirt for $100 that had a cryptic, alien design, I would get it. But I don't know how much concert tees go for these days--that might be reasonable.

Sal on "Styling black athletic shoes to look good?"

I have some foot issues and had to get new athletic sneakers. I will mostly wear these for walking but occasionally I will wear them for longer days out in some sort of activewear or very casual clothes.

I love bright athletic sneakers rather than black ones but I got advice in a local store which I like to support. And they only had the black in my size - and to be honest the cream and brown wasn’t that appealing to me either. But these were much better than the Hoka or the ASICS.

Any ideas how to make them look a little cooler? I could swap laces, coloured socks.

It doesn’t matter in the big scheme of life but i do feel a bit sad about it….
