My compassionate side hopes that these people are at least genuine and not putting on some kind of game for the paper. At least they are not doing active evil in the world; there's nothing wrong with expressing your artistic side in a clothing line, even if you are ignorant of how most of the world lives and sound ridiculous while you do it.
My more cynical side: There are all those studies about cognitive dissonance - pretty much everyone gets used to where they are and what is around them, because knowing that you're doing something that doesn't fit is literally painful. We all rationalize things everyday; it's just that these folks have a bigger gap than the rest of us.
