Q&A about individual items, ensembles, and wardrobe

would these work as 'clamdiggers' if shortened?

I'm wondering if these would work as clamdiggers if they were shortened? Or, are they too loose? I'm not wild about the tighter version as I'd like to downplay my 'pear-ness'.

They look too loose to me. I am a pear as well and I am generally skeptical about the prospect of my looking good in clamdiggers. I will be following your finds, please share pictures when you find a pair you like!

These could be made into walk or bermuda shorts perhaps, but the key to clams is finding something that fits like a skinny jean.
I'm also a pear, and don't mind the fit of my clams (CK and JCrew) in the hip area. I'm actually only uncertain about the correct length and where they should fit below my knee. It seems like most of the lengths I've tried make my calf look even larger.
Good luck!

Thanks for the info Sarah. I'm wondering if maybe I should stick with bermuda/walk shorts instead. I'm going to go back and read Angie's post about clams and see if she has some tips on lengths for my body type.

I think that clamdiggers are really short skinny jeans, therefore they should be quite fitted. Julijuli, you could wear them the same way that Angie recommended that pretty pears wear skinnies: with a longer top. Some lightweight mid-thigh tunics would look good. Something like this:

I do not know if they are considered clamdiggers but I think that they would be cute shortened. Aren't they any out there in that style that are already shorter? I hate to see expenses get so high with additional hemming. Do you like this style? I do not know about those side pockets.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who is on the fence with Clam Diggers. I love them on other people, but I'm skeptical about how they will look on me. Of course, I have not tried any on. But it seems like the only way you can "find" clam diggers is to buy capris and shorten them. So I'd have to make the committment to buy them and not be able to return them.

I think bermudas and skirts are going to be more my speed.

Tanya, I love the look you posted. I was just trying to figure out a way I could use the tops I already have for the summer (in case I'm still on a tight budget at that time!) GG - I'm trying to avoid the side pockets because I think that just exacerbates the situation. But I like those pants.

JJ, how about these?

They are slim but not skintight, have good pockets, and would work with normal length tops. I am actually considering trying them myself ( and shortening a bit if necessary).

Ooh - I like those a lot Tanya. Have you tried them on? I've never worn any express pants and wonder how the sizing works.

Posted 9 months ago

Yes, I have tried them on. I needed a 2 in them which is my typical pant size ( I wear 2 in BR pants too and 26/27 in jeans). The material feels very nice on the skin, it has a bit of sateen-y finish.

You’d look great in the look that Tanya posted, jj. Try Express. They should work.

Nicole, do you have a JCrew near you? They should be getting their clamdiggers in before too long (although I'm not sure if your store will wait on that till later). I went in and tried some on and was surprised I didn't hate them. Once I figure out the length I should be okay.

I have to reiterate - it's VERY early to be looking for clams. Ranges will be full in a couple of months. Wait!
