WIW: To visit my mom in the hospital

My 91 YO mother fell yesterday and is in the hospital. We just went through this three months ago with my MIL. My mother didn't break her hip, though, she broke her kneecap, and hit her head. The doctors think her head is okay. We come from a long line of hard heads. Finally, it came in handy!

This is what I'm wearing today. It would be high low except there's no high. Lee crops from Kohl's, white shirt from Walmart, Johnston and Murphy sandals, and my new seatbelt bag. I love it's silvery color.

Nice outfit and sandals! I hope your mom recovers promptly. She is lucky that her hip is OK, it's easier to recover from the knee injury than from a hip one.

So sorry to hear about your mother. As you know, I was through that whole business last year and it turned out worse for my poor mum. Either way, it's a stress.

I'll bet your bag coordinates beautifully with your hair.

I am so sorry to hear about your Mum, JAileen, very stressful and scary. I'm glad to hear her head is OK, and I hope her knee will heal quickly.

Your outfit is lovely. The subtle print on the pants together with the textural integrity of your sandals and bag make it for me.

Great look for a stressful event. My 86-yo mum fell yesterday (4th time in 18 days) and broke her arm. She went from relatively independent on June 1 to needing 24 hour caregivers as of yesterday. I suspect she has had a tiny stroke that has not impeded her cognition but has damaged her balance centers. Alas. Hope your mother's recovery is uneventful.

Well, you look wonderful but I'm so sorry you are going through this. I'm glad the head injury wasn't significant. Falls can be devastating. We went through this with my MIL and it was incredibly stressful.

I'm sorry to hear about your mom. Falls are scary and serious. I remember vividly the night my mom fell. I hope your mom recovers in good time and that her spirits are good.

Thank you everyone. My mother's injuries are worse than originally thought. Fortunately her head seems fine, but she broke her shoulder in addition to the kneecap, and has two black eyes. She's having surgery tomorrow on her knee. The last time my mother was in the hospital was when I was born.

Maneera, my bag is made out of seatbelt material, by Harveys. Suz, it is the same color as my hair. Nebraskim, I'm sorry about your mother.

My heart goes out to you. Surgery at 91 is scary and serious. And I am sure you are carrying a lot of the stress, and the job of comforting an anxious patient. Please keep us updated. I'm so sorry this is happening.

ditto everything Janet and everyone else said. My mom had a balance evaluation but isn't making a special appointment to get the results. She's waiting for her appointment in a few months. Ugh! Although my dad's memory isn't so good, his balance is, so together they work it out pretty well so far.

Thanks, everyone. My mother had her knee surgery today and it went very well. She was very perky and talkative this afternoon. She may be released tomorrow or the next day. Her retirement home has an associated health center with physical therapy. With both a bad shoulder and bad knee she will be in a wheelchair for at least a little while, and they will be able to accomodate her needs.

Sorry to hear about your Mom and glad her recovery is going well. I know how stressful it is...hugs to you.

Falls are unfortunately so common with elderly people especially women. My Mom fell about 5 years ago and cracked a vertebrae in her back. It eventually healed, but she has been in very low level pain most of the time since then. She rarely complains but it's tough to see. I give my mom so much credit for attending both Tai Chi and yoga classes at age 87 and I know they help with balance and bone strength.

Sounds like she and your mom might have some things in common!
