WIW: To the Polish Spa - YouLookFab Forum

Hello Lovely Ladies,

Today My family and I went to the spa in Poland, which is only an hour away from us. It was a way for us to get out of the house and relax so we don't go crazy with my dad being gone.

I wore my Land's End, blue one piece. I love this suit. It is super flattering for my figure, despite being a one piece. the dark colour sets off my pale skin well.

It is always interesting to be in Europe and experience the difference that people feel about their bodies. Here is an excerpt from my blog about it:
"People here in Poland and Czech are pretty comfortable with their bodies. At the spa there were a few young fit people who had great bodies, but most of them actually were middle aged or older or sometimes just lumpy. Most of the women wear two piece swimsuits regardless of their shape. People just don't care and the guys let their beer-bellies hang out."

What are ya'lls thoughts on body image in the place where you come from? Are people comfortable with their bodies, fit or otherwise? Or is the tendency to hide imperfections more?

I have never been to Poland or to an open spa, come to think of it. Our spa has you wrapped up in thick head to toe robes as you sip your tea!

Body image is a really big thing here in the US, but more so in some areas. I live in the very cold Midwest and was at the lake this past weekend. We were almost all pale and pasty white, and most of us were too busy enjoying our kids and the brief summer to notice anyone else. Granted, this was a family beach.

I credit being involved in sports from a young age for my positive body image, and even now I'm comfortable showing it 'like it is.' I know my imperfections (frizzier hair, skin not as smooth as it once was, everything a little softer, a little droopier, not as fast, not as strong) but it doesn't really matter that much to me - I like the idea that I've earned the body I've got, it still does cool stuff, and I really wouldn't change a thing.

There are many kinds of beautiful, and I am glad we are not all cut from the same cookie cutter. Unfortunately, it has been my experience here in North America (Canada) that folks, women in particular, are too hard on themselves when it comes to body image.

I love your swimsuit LucyRose.

I think we are a little more body conscious here in NZ than in many parts of Europe. I have friends who will not be seen in a swimsuit; women of all sizes and shapes.

I have always admired women who get in, enjoy the water, and are not too self conscious about their shape. I love seeing more mature women swimming. Like Carla I am proud that my body allows me to exercise and walk and cope with my life. And fortunate. While I surely have days that I would love my tummy to be flatter or my thighs to be smaller, I try to move on and enjoy things as they are, and sometimes that is another glass of wine or some crisps

Great discussion. I'm in the U.S. I have to admit that there is a deluge of media directed at young women. The need to be perfect is intense. I will write more when I have a keyboard.

I love your swimsuit, LucyRose, and can see it would be very flattering.

I'm in the UK and would say that, on the whole, people are fairly comfortable with their bodies here. Some are very fit and gym-toned, others are seemingly happy to wear skimpy clothing with less-than perfect bodies ( whatever "perfect" is supposed to look like ).
My own personal bugbear is my upper arms, which I feel more comfortable when covered. BUT, come the warm weather, I take the view that nobody is actually going to die from the sight of my bare arms.
I would much prefer to see people enjoying themselves despite any imagined imperfections, than hiding under baggy clothes and feeling miserable about their image.

Thistle: I love that you were so busy enjoying the time with family that no one cared about swimsuit readiness. I go to school in the Midwest, so pastiness is also my province!

Runcarla: Wow! You have a great figure! You are so fit. Your confidence is really inspiring.

Kiwigal: Yes! Sometimes crisps trump flatter belly! And I love what you said about enjoying life as it is.

Sterling: Yeah, I have not yet been in environments where that is true, but I know through the media it can get intense.

Summer: Thanks! My suit is great. I have fluctuated a bit in weight over the past year and the suit has always looked good whatever the case. I also appreciate your comments on just enjoying life. I also laughed at your comment about people dying from seeing your arms:) Heehee! Hopefully no one dies from the stretch marks on my thighs!
