WIW: I didn't feel fab

Last night we went to the CASA appreciation dinner. I've been a CASA for five years. I've had one case, with three siblings. The older two have aged out, and the remaining child is now a junior in high school, and about 6'3".

I was planning to wear my light grey EF jersey dress and new grey boots, but that didn't seem warm enough. So I switched to this lace skirt, cashmere sweater and boots. I added this new Scottie scarf and a red bag. I did not feel fab at all. I think it was the sweater. Other than ditching the sweater I'm not sure what I should have done. I felt comfortable, though. It was in the 30s last night, with a little wind. At the dinner I sat next to a woman from Lake Tahoe. She thought the weather was great, so I guess it's all relative!

No. I think it's the skirt. I think it's too delicate or something.
Do you have skinny jeans/pants to wear with your boots? I think skinny jeans would look SO NICE but of course, you have to feel comfortable.

I love the skirt with the boots, Janet - and the scarf is precious. It needs to be tied another way - muffler style. And a shorter pullover would be perfect.

That scarf is so cute! I didn't notice the scotties at first - it's fairly subtle. I like Angie's suggestion of a different tie for the scarf (although I frequently tie my scarves like you have here) and a shorter top. I think it's the extra material around your waist that makes the outfit look off.

Smittie, somehow I have skipped skinny jeans altogether. This event was a little dressier than jeans anyway. But that's a thought for other times, maybe even Christmas.

Angie, thanks. Do you mean looped around my neck with two ends in front? I thought the sweater was too long, too. It would probably work with jeans.

Sara, thanks. The scarf reminds me of Escher. Most people don't notice the Scotties. You're right about the sweater length, I think. My waist is not slim anymore and the extra fabric just makes it look worse.

I think the sweater just needed to be shorter -- it seems a bit too bunched up at your waist with that beautiful skirt. The scarf is adorable!

Janet, thanks. The irony is I chose the outfit in order to wear the sweater!

Suz, thanks. The boots fit great. I was thinking about them last night. My feet are big so you'd think the circumference of the boots would be too big, but they felt just right.

JAileen - I definitely notice I need a different proportion/length on top when I'm wearing a skirt vs. when I'm wearing pants or jeans. In fact, I haven't couple things that can only be worn with skirts. I try not to have too many as it can be limiting, but if you have a rotation of skirts, it is useful for me to keep an eye on length of top.

I think this outfit is an almost, and easy to make you feel fab with a tweak or two.

I agree that you need a shorter and/or more fitted in the waist sweater.

I really like your boot but I would have changed them out for a bootie and tights.

Ledonna, thanks! I don't have black booties. I know, shocking! I was trying for a warm outfit so the tall boots actually felt great.

J'Aileen, an English company, the Pure Collection, always carries a retro-styled Cashmere Crop sweater that is great with skirts. A slightly shorter length and deeper ribbing at the bottom give it nice waist definition while keeping an easy fit. Comes in various sleeve lengths & pretty colors, too.

There are quick fixes until you get a shorter length sweater

Tuck--fully or semi
Fold the extra length under TO a satisfactory length and use fashion tape to keep it from sliding down.

Yikes! That last picture of Skunky shows us why you would want to wear tall sturdy boots!

Joy, I'd never seen a tarantula in real life before. Mr Skunky was the one who found it. It was pretty exciting!

What is a CASA?

Delurked, have you seen Arachnophobia? That was super creepy! But also funny. We saw this spider at a lake, thankfully.

Momo, thanks! CASA is Court Appointed Special Advocate. We speak to the judge on behalf of foster children. The children I was assigned to were never going to be reunited with their mother, and they were at an age where adoption was unlikely. They've been in several foster homes, group homes, and the county's emergency shelter.

Those boots are awesome and they look very good with the skirt. It takes some trial and error to come with the perfect length sweater for skirts. The one with the ruffles is a very beautiful one.
And can I just say that I love the photos of the doggy, I don't even mind the tarantula.

I love BJ's solution! My thought is a slightly more structured, shorter topper would be terrific. A simple black tee or sleeveless top and a black jacket would be terrific, too!
