WIW for Etouffee

Heading out for an unexpected dinner with a client. I had to piece together an outfit from random items in my bag, keeping in mind the heat and the rain and my desire to walk the few blocks to the restaurant. Passable I think? How would you improve this?
I did scrunch sleeves, BTw.

Very spiffy outfit! The shoes are an interesting choice. I really like it.

Is this a Portland restaurant? I'll bet you have some great places to eat up there. DH and I have to plan some kind of a trip.

As long as there's plenty of stretch in the waist. I spent a day and a half in NO once and can't believe how much food I ate in that short time. Enjoy!!

I think I might have liked it better without the jacket. Something about the white sneaks below all the black is not doing it for me.

I am not feeling this outfit AT ALL. Just goes to show, sometimes you're up (this morning) and sometimes not (tonight). I like these shoes with black pants generally, but Lisa I might agree they don't work here. And the jacket is the wrong proportion for these pants - much better with skinnies. Thanks for calling the shoes an "interesting choice," Mochi. I think the whole thing is a fail.

The lesson: don't change if you don't have to. And/or, pack an easy casual dress just in case.

I actually think it looks kind of fun. Maybe the shoes are a little too much contrast with the suit look but I don't think it's a fail.

That is all I can see. You are wearing "our" jacket again!! I thought you banished it? But it's great on you. Love it with this top.

I have also had some problems with this jacket with cropped flared jeans, FWIW. I have worn it that way successfully only a few times, and that with the Hibou booties that completely "closed the gap" (if that makes sense) and also had a 2 inch heel.

(My legs, esp. calves are on the short side, so I just flat out would not go for flats with cropped flares - -I can't do it at all. Your proportions are better for that look. I do think if one is doing it, a pointy toe really helps, though.O

I think the whole outfit works except maybe the shoes. Because you have tucked your top in there is plenty of leg length happening with the cropped pants. The first thing I noticed about the outfit was how chic the jacket looked. As Suz suggests, I think it would be improved by some higher shaft, dressier shoes.

I think it's funky - and without the jacket would be great ! Jacket and pant together is too heavy/ too much I agree . But I like the sneakers here - just without the jacket

I really like the Stan Smith trainers, and may be the jacket is making them look abit out of sync. May be a grey jacket?

Watching with interest because I'm trying to think more about identifying my favorite pieces and remixing more. I do love having just the right " this for that" but am tired of wardrobe expansion. Plus travel needs tight capsules.
I think it's if you do these pants , need to chose jacket or shoes , not both. Then I like the T suggestion- if Did do suit + sneaks, it might work with a graphic T , lotta white. Trying to avoid the commuter sneak look. Or with black sneaks with white soles.
So really, since I'm in awe of your travel dressing , does any of this help you hone in on items that are more multipurpose , and what makes them so? Because we can't travel with our whole wardrobes!

Not bad for a piece together outfit.

I had to look up etoufee and it looks delish. I did a cooking class in New Orleans and the chef made something similar which we all shared. Yum!!

Mmm, I see no problem with the outfit, except it looks more like Fall than Summer.
You could try ankle strap or high shaft black shoes to close the gap with your pants.

I agree with Angie - this is a very dark look for summer in NOLA. I think you could have worn a white tee without a jacket for a more casual, summer vibe.

Thank you for shoring me up here, ladies, and for the really great insights about this outfit. I am definitely a "let's throw it all out and start fresh" kind of person, and I appreciate your advice to slow down and think it through. (Yes, unfrumped is right: it's an experiment!) The Garance Dore comparison (thank you, Carla!) is both flattering and helpful; if I had pushed this farther with a tee the trainers would have made more sense. And the jacket is a bit heavy/dark -- so thank you to those who explained why it is off balance with the sneakers (skylurker, Angie, Jane, Robin).

Suz, Brooklyn: I struggle with this jacket. I love it, but the fit is not quite right. This size fit best when I bought it, but then my body shifted in the year following and it was huge; I had it tailored and now it's not perfect. But it's so beautiful that I can't get rid of it. I still wear it occasionally. I'm glad it looks good, but I do think it's best worn casually with skinnies.

Cococat, AviaMariah, and Jaileen: My client and I had a dish called "Crawfish Kali" which had several New Orleans favorites in one: a crabcake wrapped in catfish over etouffee. Sounds odd but it was spicy and savory and pretty luscious. But I need to get home and eat some simple clean food. I think I am still full from dinner.

BTW, I do LOVE these sneakers -- both how they feel, and also oddly, how they look on my feet. So thank you Lisap for inspiring me. I guess I am still getting the hang of integrating them into an outfit.

I still like your outfit. Here's where we used to eat every Friday when we worked in downtown Houston. We went to their location at an old church. It was very charming, but also delicious. Now they have a lot of locations.

I have their cookbook and make red beans and rice regularly. Before Houston we lived in SE Texas, which is mostly populated by Cajuns. Our town had an annual Gumbo Cookoff. We could get all different kinds of gumbo. We could also get boiled crawfish by the pound.

The rest of the outfit looks a bit too dressy for the sneakers and I'm not sold on the jacket and pants together. You could change out the blazer for a bomber, or swap the pants for cuffed jeans. Try a plain white tee instead of the blouse? Less tailored, more sporty?
