WiW: dressed up denim (is this a bit preppy?)

First time wearing my new denim skirt. I tried to dress it up as much as possible and keeping a summery vibe. Don't know if that worked out properly. What do you say? And is this look a bit preppy, though denim is probably not part of a preppy basics?

Great outfit, Harmonica! I love the soft blouse and the interesting sleeve details on the jacket.

To me, this outfit is modern classic (and totally fabulous), but not "preppy."

Love! I see modern classic, too.

To me, preppy is like "sporty classic." Something you could wear to prep school... youthful, sporty, comfy. Preppy evokes images of rugby, cricket, polo, crew rowing. Not as refined and grown up as classic.

oh, that makes sense, Rae! I find it hard to see Coco Chanel in such a setting, and she is truely classic.

ETA: the "modern" part in modern classic, is that about adding trendier items with classic pieces, i.e. like a pencil skirt with a skinny neon belt?

I'd call this "modern classic," too. I also see little bits of retro (pearls, shoes) in this look. Sometimes, your looks also have strong boho or "edgy" elements. A basic like this skirt is a great piece that will "anchor" a lot of different elements. Love this -- very fashionable, but cohesive!

Thanks Beth Ann! I am so happy that you find the skirt versatile! I was hoping that I could use this a lot in my everyday business, both as casual work wear and (M)OTG. Very enlightening comments on modern / retro / edgy style as well

okay, I'll differ and say this seems like a preppy color combination. The pieces themselves are more edgy classic. Really nice outfit!

LOVE every piece of this! Harmonica, a fantastic, interesting, edgy look --- classic or not, preppy or otherwise! Love how you wore the shrug over the wrap top, so unexpected, and those darling shoes... sigh!

Aida, Kiwichik, Jayne, Manidipa and Deborah, so happy that you all liked it! This *was* very high on the happy scale.

As for changing style direction - I think Claire maitioned that too, and when I think about it I have actually tried to be a bit more streamlined and exploring the classic a bit more. I have been more at the office, less at home and with no students around I have had the opportunity to play a bit more. When holding lectures (and at conferences) I usually stick more to safe area and I really *do* want them to listen to what I say instead of thinking of my outfit (though just one girl this semester). ANd I try to look very put together and to give impression of authority.

Modern Classic indeed! Now if you take the denim skirt and team it with something like a pair of Cons or a striped or rugby or plaid shirt then THAT could make it be preppy!

Oh, thank you for the suggestion Meredith! That was *so* enlightening!! But if I paired it with a untucked or half tucked plaid skirt and low heel slouchy booties (http://www.shineshop.no/index......038;id=121) would that say more french chic or Isabel Marant?
