WIW: Denim A-line Skirt With a Hint of 70's Glam

I am currently enjoying the very diverse opinions of a denim skirt in this thread - very interesting. Obviously, there are no rights or wrongs here.

Janet challenged me to consider the A-line skirt a challenge much like the Skirted Leggings of Controversy, and of course I will. I'm looking forward to see your denim pencil skirt, too, Janet!

Here's my first attempt at styling it for a rather wintery spring day:
Chunky cream sweater, cognac belt and boots, stone trench, stone bag. At first I tried with a silk neck scarf, but I felt it became almost costume-y, so I left it off. I wore this for running errands with DH.

I know this won't convince everybody, which of course is just fine. But what do you think - is it a hint of 70's glam over his, or is it just in my head?

Please add any suggestions or comments you would like, and thanks for looking.

I'll jump in! This is the perfect 70s look - although to me it's more earthy than glam with the colors and textures. You look wonderful in it! I would look all wrong though - I can just feel that by observing it... I say thumbs up.

Yep, see, that's what I'm talking about! I was not particularly a fan of this skirt when you first posted it, but I think that's because a lot of my associations with the style were similar to what others expressed. But I think this works really well -- it looks current with the semi tuck and the roomy top.

Thanks, Una. You are right, of course. The sweater and boots aren't particularly glam, so the overall effect is definitely earthy. In summer I'll try with a cream silk blouse and wedge sandals in suede. That would also be very 70's, and maybe a tad more glam, don't you think?

Janet, thanks! For me, who is free of negative associations with the style in itself, this felt really nice to wear. This sweater has been a workhouse this winter, but I need to swap it for a lighter version soon - it's very warm.

Well - I love a denim skirt and have always had a denim skirt in my wardrobe. I love this a-line version and your outfit looks great.

I love it. My comment on your other thread didn't come up, but the skirt fits so well and I'm one who needs a denim skirt to fall back on. They work with sweaters or tank tops, blazers or moto jackets. This outfit looks wonderful on you with the semituck keeping it modern to my eye.

Just goes to show that most fashion works when styled well. The difference today is remarkable and I really like this fresh and modern take. I think you have swayed my opinion with this look Ingunn....the neutrals are perfect with the skirt...very nice!

I likey! The light colors makes it look fresh for spring. The front tuck and raglan sleeves of the sweater keep it modern. The structure provided from the trench and satchel bag adds a dose of sophistication. Nicely styled!

Well, I like it, but then I'm still partial to wearing my knee-length denim pencil skirt with tall boots, a chunky white sweater, and a trench even at my ripe old age of 65, so you need to take my thumbs up with that in mind. I also love wearing the skirt with my Breton stripes and espadrilles in the summer.

Honestly, I was a bit surprised at the dislike for denim in a skirt shape. It's interesting to think about where, when, and how we develop our idiosyncratic likes and dislikes about what goes on our bodies--and how hard it is to get beyond them when we see another person enjoying something that makes us shudder.

I avoided the other post but think a degree of "sassiness" makes this skirt look terrific. The knee high boots and semi tuck provide that.

I like this too. But I am not anti demin skirt either and was also a bit surprised by the reactions on the other thread. When I joined the forum one of Angie's first suggestions for me was to buy a knee length denim skirt. I did and it became a workhorse!

Love! I never answered on your other thread but I am giving myself denim skirt therapy to get over my aversion to denim skirts. Like others it is based on association with a non-pants wearing religious group. In my case it is a sub-section of orthodox Jewish women, but that is not the point.
Anyway, the structured bag and classic trench makes it current and fab!

Alassë, I thought cowboy/western style was about the boots, plaid and bandanas.

Gaylene, I hope to be wearing this kind of clothes in about 18 years time, too. To me, all of this is quite classic and timeless. Also agreeing on that he Breton will be great with the skirt for summer.
