WIW as a (minty fresh!) MOTG - YouLookFab Forum

This weekend I hosted a play date/brunch and wore this. I'm even showing my face this time (DH took the pics). ; )

So, here's my assessment. I like this outfit. I think it looks good. Not "wow," but good. The top emphasizes my IT shape in the photos more that it does IRL. However, I've always had broad shoulders and I've always worn boat necks because I like them, fully acknowledging that they do nothing to minimize my broad shoulders.

I think navy and mint look great together. Really fresh. The sandals add a little fun. They have an interesting heel and the metal loop front center gives them a little bit of a polished but tough vibe. But... this outfit feels a little unimaginative. I'm reflexively a classic dresser. I long to be a little funner, a little funkier.

Any suggestions to make this a little funkier?

Sorry, I haven't a clue how to make an outfit funkier...I'll leave that to the experts. Just wanted to say that I like this unexpected color combination! And that navy boat neck suits you to a T.

I love your beautiful smile! How about a longer, stronger, funkier necklace? Maybe a pendant? Also, removing the shoulder buttons would minimize the shoulders a bit.

Really nice, K! I guess you could throw on a printed scarf if it's not too hot if you want some more interest. I love the lines of this outfit though, and you are following one IT guideline by wearing a light color on your bottom half and a dark one on your top. The neckline is lovely on you. I prefer these slightly scooped boat necks (like yours) than the slash necks that cut straight across (on those of us with strong shoulders).

@Donna, that (buttons) makes perfect sense. It also explains why it doesn't seem so wide in person versus the photo. The photo makes the buttons pop. They are much more subtle (same color, low reflection) in real life. Also, the sweater is actually a cable knit (twin of Meredith's JCrew linen sweaters). That detail gets lost in the photo too. Now I know why the photo didn't look as good as I felt in real life! A longer pendant would also create a stronger vertical line. I will definitely try that with the next wearing!

@Claire. So true! That little scoop really does make these work so much better. The little details, right?

I think you look great as is, but a change to a bigger, bolder necklace and watch might funk you up a bit.

So nice to see your face and beautiful smile! In the past year, I've learned that "classic" isn't a dirty word. It doesn't mean "dull," either. A classic silhouette will always be appropriate, and often does a great job at letting the wearer shine, instead of drawing attention to itself. I agree that a scarf or stronger, longer necklace would punch up this look a bit. A chunky bracelet would work well, too. Still, letting the new color combination take center stage works beautiful.

Oh -- and I think broad shoulders are terrific!

I really like this look. I am addicted to boatnecks too and not sure they are "best" for me but I feel good in them. This top has such simple, clean lines and nice vibe. Love with mint pant!

To change it up next time, a funkier pendant would be the easiest way to go or a long rope of beads. I like the idea of clean neckline a big cuff or some "arm candy" bracelets. You could do some long earrings beautifully with your hair pulled back in the way you have it shown and then nothing else.

I wore mint and navy today too! It's a nice color combo.

I have found that bolder accessories add the fun/funk to basic pieces.

I'm not sure why, but the sandals seem a little dainty for this outfit. I could see metallic loafers or bold colorful pumps (orange?) or wedges. Colorful long beads or a fun long pendant (see my two workhorses below) could be alternatives.

I'm not very talented in the funky department, but I do agree about adding some statement bracelets, several in fact. Or a big bold cuff bracelet in leather possibly? I have a black cuff bracelet that edges up whatever I put it with.

Love those shoes and I'm a fool for boatnecks too and wear them whether they look good on me or not.

@Beth Ann, thank you especially for the reminder that classic isn't a dirty word. Too true. I love simple and classic on others and I love it on myself most of the time. Having that little reminder now and again is priceless.

@AJ, the sandals! That really resonates with me because even when I was wearing them, I thought that they worked, but weren't perfect. I was yearning for something more substantial. I'm definitely looking for some funner sandals now. Rae's post totally inspired me.

Others have already mentioned my first thought, which was a funky statement necklace - which would add funk and also bring the eye in, since you mentioned the broad shoulders. Something in golden tones to bookend the sandals, maybe?

Interesting that you don't think the sandals are perfect (glad you got something out of my post, btw!) - hard to know what is "perfect" until we know what to aspire to, right? I will be watching to see if you come up with some more substantial sandals!

@Rae, totally resonating. I was thinking of a chunky amber necklace that I have. Perfect gold/gold bookending.
