WIW: A neckerchief and crops outfit fail

In an attempt at this formula, I paired a striped tee that I like, but don't wear all that often with rust crops and a rust/brown neckerchief. In my head, it was terrific.

Then I took a picture. Sigh. First, the proportions are off: The shirt is too short for the crops, the crops are too short to be crops (they're more capris?), and they're too tight too, and the neckerchief is kinda too big (and too hot) to wear with it.

So I wasn't thrilled with it. But glad to have the truth of the picture nonetheless.

The top goes fine with skirts. I'm debating on keeping the pants - what do you think? And I think the neckerchief trend is not a hot-weather trend for me. Maybe next week when it should be cooler I'll try again.

I like the color of the pants and the fit looks ok to me from the photo. If you have a longer top that you can wear with them, they would be worth playing with more stylings.

Perhaps you would be happier with the bandana/scarf if you folded it another way.
I fold mine in halves to make a rectangle then grab the diagonally opposite points so when I pick it up I have \/\/ this shape at the bottom. I put the straight edge around my neck, tie the ends together then turn it until the knot is on one shoulder, the twist on the other shoulder and I have a point hanging down front and back.
I looked for diagrams but was unsuccessful so I hope my directions make sense to you.
As for your ensemble, I like the proportions (and the colours) myself as they are close to what I wear - 2:3. If I have a top that is two-fifths of my ensemble length then the pants/skirt is the three-fifths. If my tops are a little long then I visually shorten them with a scarf to correct the proportions.

I think proportions work.
I like the orange-blue-white combo too.
What doesn't work is the neckerchief part : you're wearing a scarf, not a neckerchief, so you couldn't tie it in the casual way of the Zara inspiration.
I hear you about the impracticality of the look in hot Summer - or you could try Joy's trick and wear a damp bandana ?

I like the outfit...it has a retro vibe to it. I like the neckerchief suggestions above but I do find them too hot in the summer.

Thanks everyone - it hadn't even occurred to me that this is a scarf, not a kerchief. No wonder it doesn't work this way. I'll save the crops, and see if I like them next time I try them out (I do like the color).

I actually think that the top and cropped pants look good together, both in terms of proportions and colors. The length is very flattering on you. I agree that the scarf is not ties quite right, but you have already received some good advice on it..

I agree this outfit looks good. I don't think the scarf looks bad but doesn't seem to be tied right. Maybe actually worn as a scarf rather than as a neckerchief?

I saw the photo and thought "that's great!" and then read the title. I don't think it's a fail. That boxy, cropped tee look is very current, and I think the tighter cropped pants balance it nicely.

(But whenever I wear that sort of proportions, I'm convinced I look like a balloon -- so maybe that's the same problem you're having, the difference in how you see it yourself and how it looks to others. I still haven't gotten used to the look on myself. Many mornings of putting on a shirt then throwing it off in dissatisfaction. And I still haven't figured out PPP for capris/crops on myself.)

I like your analysis, but don't be too harsh on yourself, this is a very cute little outfit, very creative and simple. I agree, though, that the striped top's length is off: too short or... to wide? You could have it taken in a tiny bit so it would better contour your beautiful silhouette.
Your comment about the scarf being too hot made me smile, because it is my exact problem with most neckerchiefs. You would think they'd go with summer clothing... Have you tried rolling it tight and maybe double looping it around, tying it at the very ends, and letting it sit at the base of your neck? Otherwise, another alternative would be to tie this very cute neckerchief to the strap of your purse.
Finally, the pants: keep them. They fit you well and they are a happy color. I would have a slit added on the side. Well done, with a little embroidery, it will change them ever so slightly, but just what it takes for you to wear them more. And you will also enjoy them with a little heel.

Not a fail at all, no way! This looks nice. I might loosen the scarf or tie it differently. It doesn't look like a neckerchief, but it isn't terrible. It's easy to get an idea in your head and think you have failed if you don't meet that standard, but I think it's important to try and judge each outfit for its own merits as well.

I think it looks good too! Just a tweak of the scarf/neckerchief is all that's needed. I hear you on it being too hot for you though. It would be great in late Summer/early Fall.
