WIW 3/3: Burnt orange, lavender and purple

It's been pretty cold here (relatively speaking) so I am enjoying my sweaters for a change. You can't really see it in the photo, but the lavender sweater has a bit of pinky orange in the heathery weave so it plays nicely with the burnt orange skirt.

Burnt orange skirt: ASOS c/o goldenpig
Lavender sweater: J Crew
Purple blazer: Amber Sun
Black patent loafer: Payless
Black satchel: Cole Haan

The proportions here are not what I usually wear but I think they kind of work (even though the iPhone photo makes me look a mile wide - ugh!). What do you all think?

I like that unexpected color combination. I wonder if the sweater hem is too low and that is what makes this look "wide."

Oh, back to sweater weather - that's not supposed to happen The orange-y tints in the sweater do show up better on J Crew's own site, though not so much in your photo, as you said. I absolutely love your skirt! I think everything works together and you look fab, as always.

Yes I love the colour combo! I kinda love the chunky patterned sweaters on others but prefer the look of a sleeker knit... in that colour of course. Nice toastie outfit.

And I don't think you look a mile wide. The skirt pleats and open jacket help draw the eye up-and-down, balancing out the chunky sweater quite nicely.

It's not a super-sleek look. But not wide either.

I really like the shape of that skirt and the jacket is great. I can't see the jacket colors properly unfortunately. I frequently look wide in photos - it's just the way I'm built. It's so hard to get an accurate perspective from a photo since it's a 2d medium and we are 3D people.

Do you have a topper that is about six inches shorter than the sweater in the pic? Showing more skirt will elongate the leg line, even with flats and 'das boot'. I am also thinking anything snowleaopar-ish could work as an alternative outfit.

Also, navy or teal and rust for another combo. (Can you tell that I REALLY like that skirt?)

I would never have believed these colors could work together so beautifully. Color experts, can you explain why, in terms of the color wheel and all that? Because the purple and burnt orange are equally strong (saturated?) and balance each other out? And because they're all solids -- prints would have been too much? I'm still mystified.

Gauche, you're right about the saturation levels. Purple and orange are also both secondary colors. A normal "complimentary" color to purple would be yellow, directly across from it on a color wheel. This is A more complex pairing: Triadic colors form a triangle shape and purple and orange both fall into a triangle like this (the third shade in this case being green).

(I just did a quick search and found this page which has some info on color harmony.)

I would prefer the skirt with a tucked in top, just because then it would really emphasize a tiny waist instead of covering it up. But fun color pairing here.
