WIW 1/12: Help save an orphan

I am wearing a sweater that is relatively new, but I never seem to wear. It's a Halogen dolman-sleeve sweater that I purchased from the Rack months ago.

Is it too short to wear with pants? And does having a longer blouse work? Is it better tucked (last photo).

Perhaps this is better suited with a skirt?

Styling variations and suggestions etc. are most welcome!

ETA: added a pic with the pencil skirt.

Does this mean it doesn't work with pants??? Or is this just an alternative look?

Have you tried it with a longer fitted top in a pattern? I'm not sure the sleeves sticking out so far are a good thing so maybe a longer fitted top with 3/4 or less sleeves.

I'm agreeing that because the sleeves of the sweater are so voluminous, it would look better with something form-fitting as an underlayer, like a turtleneck or a long tee. I do like the current look's neckline a lot, and am curious to see what kind of solutions there are for this. A very challenging sweater!

this is very versatile piece-you can def wear it with longer sleeves as well as short ones. Try a crewneck long sleeved tee also, if you want something different. You can also wear tunic sweater/leggings and this sweater on top. For dressier occasions, you can pensil skirt and heels. Personally, I like the combo you did with tailored shirt but I like edgier/unique looks so I'm sure not everyone would like this

I can see why you like it and I would agree with Victoria that a fitted pencil skirt and heels would look really nice, too. Or, the leggings and tunic for a sleek-on-the-bottom and fuller silhouette on top, for casual-cool.

Thanks for the suggestions! I added a pic with the pencil skirt (Go Yellow Raisin!), following your great suggestions!

I think this sweater does work with a pencil skirt. (Ironically, Rae, the same skirt Sveta was wearing...but this sweater is much shorter).

I don't have leggings or a longer tunic to try.....I did tuck the turtleneck sleeves under the sweater sleeves in this one.

But does this mean the sweater doesn't work with the pants and shirt, or is this an alternative?

Gotta run to make dinner, but will be back later!

I think it works with slim pants and a longer top underneath as you show it. How does it look unbuttoned? You could belt your shirt under the cardi.
Do you have a silky bow blouse that you could wear under this piece?

I'm thinking this would look good with a cami underneath, something with a deeper scoop neck so you show off the v-neck of the sweater. Also the cami doesn't have sleeves, so no competing with the sweater's sleeves. You could wear the cami tucked or out, but you need to play around with the right length if untucked.

Basically, the sweater is of distinct design so you want to keep the supporting pieces simple. I think a high, crew neck already competes too much with the neckline of the seater. Does any of that make sense? Following these principles, I could see the sweater with many kinds of bottoms.

I do like the way you've done it in #1 if you rolled up the sleeves to at least 3/4 lngth or shorter. The neckline of the woven shirt plays very nicely with the sweater's neckline.

I really like the sweater and think it looks great with the pants, I love the color of the blouse with this, too, but think a layering T would work better. The sleeves and cuffs of the blouse seem like they compete with the sweater.

I like it with the slim bottoms too. It seems too heavy for the raisin skirt--at least to my eye. Perhaps it would work better with a layering tee in a lighter color? I'm curious if you have tried this with bootcuts? It seems like a bit of volume on the bottom would help balance out the voluminous sleeves. I bet is would also look great with a dark wash denim skirt too.

I like the idea of wearing it with a dress in a contrasting color, if you have one. It's a very pretty, interesting piece. I think it will be worth it to try to figure out how to style it, even though it's a bit tricky.

It sounds like there is generally a consensus that the cuffs of the woven shirt might compete with these sleeves.....I see what you mean.....

But, in general, I guess the sweater goes with more than I thought, when I look at all your suggestions. Unfortunately, my closet is rather small, so I don't really have a layering cami or a contrasting dress, or even a longer layering T.....but will keep these ideas in mind.....

Kelly, I see what you mean about the heaviness of the sweater with the skirt...maybe a lighter top would remedy that. I do have bootcuts to try!

Angie, thanks for the styling props. I could tell my fab punk daughter that you thought I had a cool element, but I'd only get an eye roll! (Nonetheless, I am thrilled at the idea of adding more cool to my style!)

I like picture #4 the best. I agree with others that it's the blouse under the sweater that's causing the problem and not necessarily the pants. I have a similar type sweater that I also have trouble styling.

I love this dolman sleeved sweater. It looks perfect in all the ways you've styled here - except for the yellow skirt. I feel it needs a longer underlayer there as well, or perhaps the textures/style of the two aren't in harmony...? Something there isn't as fab as the other combos.

Daughters...what do they know? (I say that because my daughter frequently rolls her eyes at me too.)

I'd wear that sweater in a hot minute, especially with some of the layering ideas you've already had.
