I think, based on my personal experimentation, the only people who have to be careful with wide belts are:
-The large-busted (it just looks awkward having boobs spilling out over the belt)
-The short-waisted (there isn't enough room for a wide belt)
Since I meet both of those criteria, I avoid them like the plague.
You absolutely must own a wide belt if:
-You're long waisted (since they visually shorten the torso and accent the waist, which is usually small on a long-waisted frame)
For everyone else, I think you just need to experiment. You never know unless you try. My guess is that it will be hit or miss. In your case, I can't imagine you will have a problem. You are so slim that it doesn't even matter if your waist isn't super defined. It's tiny by any standard. Belts come in lots of different widths though, and your magic number might be a little narrower than Angie's, since you are smaller than her. In short, try on a bunch. You lose nothing by trying. Even stubborn me gave the look a try, knowing fully that it probably wouldn't be flattering. But in the process I did discover that I could wear thin belts, at least from a visual standpoint (I can't wear them from a comfort standpoint though). So you might make some discoveries along the way.
