Which Scotch Plaid Shirt?

Previously on YLF (said in my best TV announcer voice), I asked for feedback on a LL Bean Scotch Plaid shirt. Some folks asked to see it in another size and a few suggested another color:

Challenge accepted. Here are two more versions of the same shirt.
Photos 1-3: The same print one size smaller.
Photos 4-6: Also one size smaller in a different print.
Photos 7-9: The one I started with for comparison.

I like the print in 4. The size I think either is fine but which do you prefer?

Thanks Golden, my gut is telling me to go with the smaller size but my instincts are not always the most stylish in that regard. But I feel less huge without all the extra fabric in the bigger size.

I just ordered the scotch plaid in a smaller size too, so we'll see what happens!

Re: size, I think it probably depends on whether you want to have a more oversized look and whether you will layer and with what, plus how it looks from the side to you.

Re: color, I'd consider what other things you might want to match with. I have a lot of burgundy and red in my very minimal wardrobe and picked the plaid that would go best with that.

I'd agree that the smaller size is better. As for the colour, well that's hard. From the pics, the black and white is a little sharper and more graphic. The darker coloured one has a more traditional feel to me. But they both look very good.

Sizewise, I definitely prefer the smaller one. Both plaid patterns are great and look great on you, so I would go with whichever one works better with colors in your wardrobe.

First of all, you are so darn cute! Your smile is so genuine, it makes me smile at you in my monitor. Maybe that's too much information.

The smaller size fits best. Both prints are nice. Which one are you dying to wear? That's the one to keep.

I prefer the smaller size in these shirts. Although the larger size is great untucked, it seems a little bulky when semi tucked due to the excess fabric.

As for which color, I have a preference for the one in pics 1-3 but that could be my own black/white bias peeking out. I would go with whatever works best with your wardrobe.

Seems we are at a dead heat in terms of which print wins. I will take that to be a good thing in that either will work for me. It just means I will need to decide. Either one will match fine with the rest of my wardrobe.

I don't know which I like better-- I like them both! One of these is going to have to go back because I really don't need three plaid shirts... Decisions, decisions...

Bumping. I've slept on it and I still haven't decided which plaid I will be keeping. Maybe I'll get a few more votes this morning. I would like to head to the LL Bean store today or tomorrow.

I prefer the first color but like Shannon, that is probably my own bias showing through. I like high contrast and the first has much more contrast than the newer print.

I read an article recently about finding the right level of contrast for your coloring.
Here are a few articles. The first one was the one I read not too long ago. I found the pictures very helpful.

dianthus-- thank you for mentioning contrast level! So, so, so helpful. I had read both those articles before and that is something I had been thinking about but when you posted that it gave me a total light-bulb moment. I've been wearing my hair straight lately but I plan to go back to wearing it curly when I get it cut next week. My hair reads as a lot darker when curly than when straight (my theory is it is the shadows created by the curls), so I'm going to be a lot more high contrast. Especially when you add in winter paleness. I'm about as tan as I ever get right now and that tan will be fading during the season in which this shirt will be worn. High contrast plaid wins! I needed something to help me make the decision and I really think you did that!

I prefer the first one, but I love black and white. The dark is nice too but just looks a little heavier.

I like 1-3, the smaller size of the original plaid. The amount of white keeps the piece lighter than the heavy dark colors of the second shirt.

I prefer #1 for size and color: I like how the white in the print makes the whole look lighter. #2 print is interesting as well though, I guess whichever speaks more to you.

I much prefer the higher contrast of the plaids in the first shirt, and the smaller size.

I prefer the smaller size but I prefer the print in #4. They both look great on you but it is my bias for darker, richer colours. I am glad you posted this because I have been looking at them online and wondering if I should order a size down.

Dianthus thank you for the links about contrast levels. I have never been able to figure mine out. I converted a picture of myself to black and white and used the gray scale. Very helpful. Medium.

I vote #4 to 6. LOVE that darker plaid on you, and the smaller size is the way to go. Wave to Inge - who has that shirt too.

I like the smaller size (definitely) and the black and white print on you. While both plaids are flattering, the black and white seems a bit more dressy

Another vote for small size, black & white print. It is lighter overall and I think that works well on you. But - both are lovely!

Just curious - if you unbutton one more button on the shirt, does it expose too much? That would make a V-neck that adds some texture(?) to the overall effect. I'm really just curious because I think it looks perfect as it is, also.

If I unbutton one more it is too revealing-- this may be unique to me though because I have a short torso. But if I wore a camisole underneath I would be ok.
