Where should scarves hit on the body?

I'm getting dressed for work shortly and am thinking of wearing my black tunic over skinnies, possibly adding a scarf as I did in this picture:

I'm a real novice when it comes to wearing scarves and don't know how best to sport them. I tucked the scarf in above because when I let it lie on top of the tunic, the ends fell almost to my crotch point and I felt silly. Where exactly should the end of the scarf be hitting me? Waist? Just above or below the bustline? Also, should I be going for a larger, more full-looking knot than the one used in this pic? I achieve the shorter length by folding the scarf and passing the dangling end through the loop, but I don't know if that would look alright.
Also...Am I right that my moto jacket would look wrong with this?

I don't think there is one right way to wear scarves; they can be long or short, or hit above or below the chest, etc. It depends on the shape, size and weight of the scarf, and what you're wearing under it. I find with monochrome outifts or sheaths, a longer scarf is better, but when the outfit has a lot going on or makes me look chestier than usual, wrapping it shorter is best.

It's cute the way you have it, but because it's a monochrome outfit, you could probably wear it out too.

Michelle, your knot with this neckline looks perfect, I would wear the scarf untucked though.

If you are finding the length slightly too long you could try starting with the scarf in front of your throat, wrapping it around the back of your neck and then knotting at the front. You do not need to worry about the lengths being symmetrical.

If you are wearing a top with a higher neckline, I would bring the knot down three or four inches. This creates the illusion of a v neck which as you know is very flattering on your body type.

I also think your moto jacket would look wonderful with your outfit.

I agree Michelle that with that outfit you want to wear the scarf long. You probably want it to hit between your waist and your crotch. If that seems to long to you (in the way and such) then atleast wear it almost to your waist.

I think your moto jacket could look really cute with this. You never know until you try it!

Wearing the scarf out and long creates a nice vertical line. Danja, in her blog entry photos yesterday wore some scarves very long (as long as her skirt) and looked great. It took me awhile to get used to wearing scarves down to my waist or below and dedends on the scarf, proportions of the outfit and your activity (will the scarf get in the way?). A long tunic seems to handle a long scarf. Your moto jacket should look fine with this outfit, especially with the scarf out.

I agree with others that longer scarves do create a nice vertical line, which can be both slimming and elongating. BUT, I think it also has a lot to do with how tall you are- at 5'2", I generally keep scarves above the crotch point. Around hipbone-length is "long" on me.

Oh- and I think your moto jacket would look great with this outfit!

I agree that the scarf would look best out with this outfit, to add visual interest. I think the "Angie knot" would look great. I don't think that a long scarf is odd, but I understand how it may feel uncomfortable. I think a scarf hitting at your belly button is a safe bet.

Moto jacket would look great! I wear my jacket over tunics all the time. I like the look.

Oooooh! Your moto jacket will look FABULOUS with this outfit.

I’m going to be my usual very opinionated self and say that there is a right and wrong to tie a scarf! The length of your neck and the size of your bust play a role on top of the type of outfit you’re wearing. If you’re well endowed, opt for more drapey scarves that collapse against the chest. The size of the scarf is not a problem – its the bulk factor. With a shorter neck, don’t tie the knot right up against the neck unless you’re braving the elements. I say stay away from neckerchiefs in general. Hard to pull off unless you have a long skinny neck.

As far as the length of the scarf goes, the taller you are the longer you can go. You are quite tall Michelle, so you can easily let a scarf hang to your waist line. I hope that makes sense.

The way you’ve tied the knot in the picture is great! Un-tuck it. I hope it’s quite long. That will look more flattering over the bust line as opposed to a length that hits you right on the bust line.

Angie, your strong opinions are part of why we all love you so much!
You're in luck, too. The scarf is quite long and I'm wearing it out, tied with the Angie knot (which actually got a complement from a coworker who promptly demanded to know how it was done and retied her own scarf that way). I feel great in this get-up and will definitely experiment with scarves more freely now, thanks to all your fabulous tips and guideance. Kristin, Kim and Julie, you guys really helped me decide what to wear this morning, and Ele, Marianna and Joy made me feel validated once I got to the office! I will absolutely put on my moto jacket next time (I opted for the safe blackberry trench this morning).
