When will real pants return?

I'm sitting out the whole cropped pants thing. It's a trend that does not suit me. Happily trends will run their cycles and I don't need any summer pants this year. But come fall, I will need to replace a few things. Any hope of getting lots of choices of full length pants by then?

Umm, from what I saw in Fall collections as well as pre-Fall already in stores, unfortunately no. There are more cropped pants than ever.

Good question. I have been wondering the same thing myself. I can do the cropped pants thing in warmer weather, but come the cold and damp it gets tricky to make it work with booties. It's too hard for me to bother when it's yucky out.

I can't answer for sure, but in the NAS catalogue I saw lots of cropped pants.

This trend left me cold (literally!!!) for the first few years. It was really unsuited to my climate and my body type (legs and especiallly calves on the short side). I sat it out, and sat it out, apart from BF jeans in spring and fall, that is. I did like those.

Then footwear designers got on board and since then I have been enjoying the trend. I have to be careful with it. I often need to wear a column of colour or I wind up looking very short legged. I need to go for a higher rise sometimes. There are adjustments.

And I still can't wear this style in my deep winter because the wind gets up inside. But now that they are making booties that come up higher on the leg (or snug to the calf boots) I can wear a cropped style in cooler temps. And it works really well for spring/ cooler summer or air conditioned days/ fall.

I think there are still lots of choices in full length trousers and pants, though. It's not impossible to find them. They just aren't featured as much in displays etc.

To my eye, it look so much more modern to wear the shorter length, but there are plenty of full-length pants available from what I've seen on line.

I originally hated cropped pants for fall and winter, for all the reasons Suz articulates, but once the shoe part was figured out, I was all over them.

Sorry to have posted and run, things kind of got out of hand here.

For Angie, two reasons why I don't like cropped pants: the emotional reason is that I am tall and they remind me of the years when I was growing so fast all my pants were "floods." Beyond that, my legs are long and I prefer to emphasize that feature, not chop it visually. JFE isn't. And I live in a casual mountain climate, totally inappropriate for bare skin 9 months of the year, and evenings 11.5 months. Nylons don't cut it for warmth. I'm going to be back in long underwear by September. I need to wear socks.

Shopping shouldn't be this hard.

Ann, are you looking for casual or dressier trousers? You can still get lots of jeans in full length and trousers, too, although it might involve looking if you need tall lengths (in addition to full length) -- but surely that was true before as well?

Have you tried the Long Tall Sally? I know Sveta and Windchime have got some things there that work. Maybe not the trendiest, but good essentials to fill gaps.

ETA: I sympathize because I also live in a cooler climate and a casual area...it would be nice to find more styles that work for this climate easily.

Casual - it's all casual here. If I could bear to wear jeans with rhinestones on the bum, I'd be at the height of localized fashion.

I'm on your side because I can't do the shoes they require. Sometimes "fashion" is really irritating, isn't it? A group of people in the industry decide what they can sell us and then control us by barely offering anything else. I agree, shopping shouldn't be this hard. I was equally miserable during the skinny only years and rejoiced when flares and wide legs came back. Crops took over so quickly after that, but I did find, and still do find, full length. Describe what you are looking for and I'll see if I've found any. I recently bought great pants at Athleta, and they do come in Tall. I'm sure they will have some options in the Fall as well.

RA, I sympathize -- I have invested in some cropped jeans, but even though I am long-legged, I don't find them the easiest thing to style for my personal style and flattery priorities. And hubs is not a fan. I'm a little tired of the style myself, since it's been going for a few years now.

I live in Toronto, so cold and long winter. And I wear crops only during warmer months. I don't like the look of crop pants with a winter coat on me. I have skinny legs and ankles and prefer to keep the top and lower part balanced. I have pants in straight cut and full length from BR and Massimo Dutty for winter. Same with jeans. Although I like how croped slim jeans look on me, it just doesn't work for colder season.

So. Jeans sound do-able, and there are still many many jeans at full length in straight, skinny, and bootcut or flare.

As Irina and Peri remark, Athleta and BR are a great option for Tall trousers and casual pants. Yes, you'll have to order them online, but that's okay.

I've been sitting out the ankle pants length, too, but love the cropped pants for summer. Slim crops work for me with the right shoes. I can't seem to pull off palazzo pants or gauchos.

I'm waiting for bootleg jeans to come back. Any chance that's the next revisited trend around the corner?
Rambling Ann, I live in Casual Colorado and jeans are everywhere. I'm tall too (5'10") and almost all my jeans are from Hudson or True Religion. Both brands have several styles with longer inseams.

Hello Rambling Ann,

At 5' 10" I understand what you are saying about wearing floods. I also avoided 3/4 sleeves for the same reason.

Yet I hated wearing shorts because (being somewhat curvy figure 8) I despised how I needed to keep pulling shorts out of my crotch every time I stood up. (sorry if TMI) So for golfing, crops were it. My 5' 1" step mom noted how nice they looked, and I replied I did not care if they made me look short!

After being frustrated at finding pants that were wearable but not too long it occurred to me that if I bought slim legged pants in regular sizes I had perfect ankle pants. Good money savings there. Ergo, I dread the day when slim ankle pants go out of style because there goes my brilliant solution.

If you have long legs, you have ample space to highlight crops and still look great. perhaps a complete change in thinking is in order? At any rate, have fun with your fashion!

I didn't think I was the only one who was on the sidelines, but it's hard when it is the look of the moment.

I also keep my clothes for a long time, so even if I were to like the look on me, I have doubts about the trend's longevity. Someday we'll get back around to my favorite Hollywood trousers from the 40's look. Katharine Hepburn's style is classic, IMHO.

You should be able to find a slew of regular lengths from July onwards. And since you like Katherine, there have been plenty of longer length flared styles available all year actually.
