@Carole, the bad thing is when I see someone wearing something tricky, and love it on them, and think "Oh, I think I'll do that!" only to realize that it was very carefully chosen and styled and by removing one element (the killer heels, usually) it just falls flat on me. A lot of things fall flat when paired with my round toed ballet flats. Or Bermuda shorts, lol!

Velour sweatpants outfits. Yick! I shudder just thinking about them.

I don't think I have an unshakable one.. Is that unusual... I can see the value of looks I don't like on others and how they fit their life or personality. I think it takes all kinds to make the world and may say NEVER for myself....but not for others...

Diana, is this a northeast thing ?

Sweatpants with things written across the bum and wide leg, rumpled pj bottoms worn as pants, both made worse with Uggs!

Dashielle, you beat me to it. Pajamas should stay at home, imho.

I wanted to weigh in on the general "poison eye" term just to clarify so nobody takes offense.
I guess I view this as like a phobia or disliking a certain food type- it's my weird phobia/dislike/poison eye and not meant as a judgment on other people's taste! Things like leggings as pants seem like an obvious no-nos, not even meriting the "poison-eye" term. I was interpreting the "poison eye" as something that obviously, lots of people like (including people who are way more stylish than me), but for some reason just doesn't appeal to me at all, especially when I try it on. But because we are talking about people's appearance and style choices, I probably should have been more sensitive about how it all sounded.

LisaP, I'm glad you see the irony in telling me you don't like it when people talk about stuff they don't like.

Honestly, I'm just idly curious. As most of you know, I'm not trying to call anyone out or hurt any feelings. Hopefully most of us get that this is (as N-Marie says) like a food taste preference. A person's dislike of ballet flats or harem pants or OTK boots is a bit like a dislike of mushrooms or artichoke. There's nothing inherently wrong with mushrooms and artichoke, but lots of people really don't like 'em. Sometimes there's an interesting reason behind it. With clothing -- as with food! -- I can guess some of the ones that people have an intractable aversion to (like harem pants), but sometimes I'm surprised. Like Diana's aversion to front centre seams. Who knew? And the reason behind it ( resemblance to open-heart surgery scars) is fascinating.

Life is less fun if we only talk about positive things all the time.

I think my only poison eye, if you can call it that, is (faux) fur. Not because of the way it looks but because imagining how it would feel to touch it gives me the creeps. This is rather irrational, I'm not a vegetarian and I wear leather. But the only "faux fur" that doesn't bother me were my cuddly toys.

I'm wearing a lot of your poison eye items right now, leggings with a logoed VS pink hoody. This is just for lounging though.

Kiwigal, that look is alive and well in plenty of Americas inner cities. Some cities have tried to legislate against it. I don't love it but I'll stand up for my nephews' rights to wear what they want. It's related to my poison eye item, extreme volume on volume.

lisap, I get what you are saying, but I sort of think it helps to discuss this. It makes me realize that there is no universal "right" just as there is no universal "wrong". All these different things that people don't love and do love...it's kind of reassuring to know that I can do what I want, without trying to please everyone, because it is all just opinion.

I would never say to a friend, or post directly, that I didn't like what someone was wearing...unless they asked a specific question like "should I tuck or un tuck". Even then, the answers are all over the place. But I don't see anything wrong with sharing general dislikes, just to see what people come up with. It gives us all the freedom to like or not like whatever we want.

I have a poison eye for odd impractical juxtapositions - like high heeled sneakers or wool shorts or peeptoe boots. I suspect that's why I'm not a fan of long coat-styled vests - they look like coats to me, but then if it's cold enough to wear a coat, why aren't there sleeves? I guess it's my sturdy Midwestern roots showing... After much practice I can appreciate them a bit on others as part of an overall look, but I still have an instinctive negative reaction to them.

If you look over the long sweep of history, fashion rules and ideal shapes are clearly culturally determined and, in a sense, arbitrary...

Not quite a poison eye, but I have a hard time with certain very structured looks. Things like bulky tops tucked and belted into stiff, fitted pants, button-downs buttoned up to the neck, etc. Thinking about wearing them just makes me feel so physically uncomfortable I can't really judge their merits one way or the other.

I think these kinds of threads are fun, FWIW. This one certainly won't keep me from my dresses over cropped leggings and my round-toed ballet flats!

It is fun to see what others think, and how we all differ. Unlike Diana but like Suz and Claire I love bemuda shorts in summer. Seems kinder on my legs than short shorts in the heat! Short shorts are my main personal poison eye!

I think my sole general poison eye is for sleeveless puffer vests. I think it might be a climate thing. I'm sure there are climates where they are very useful, I'm just not sure Sydney is one of them! I see them a lot at soccer games on a Saturday morning, and I think of them as part of the soccer mum uniform. But I really don't get it. If it's cold enough for a puffer, why not wear some sleeves????

Pajamas. Please wear clothes when out and about. It only takes a few minutes to get dressed.

Ill-fitting clothing, whether it be shoes that are too small or clothing that's so tight it looks like you were poured into it. I don't need to see toes hanging over the front of sandals or every lump, bump and muffin top a women has.

Socks or tights with sandals.

Pants that are several inches too short. I see this all of the time.

Boots with summer dresses. Sandals or flip flips with long pants and long-sleeved sweater. Really???

I agree with Kiwigal - ultra-low slung, underwear-revealing pants on men are my poison eye. Or women for that matter, but I can't remember ever seeing that.

Sometimes, so much underwear real estate is showing that you can actually make out butt crack underneath the fabric.

Not to mention the times when the pants seem to be defying the laws of physics and in serious danger of falling down completely.

Sometimes I will become transfixed. "Is that butt crack? Surely those pants are going to come down soon... What about now, as he gets out of his chair? How can he stand it?"

It's not a good look staring a stranger's bums in public. Unfortunately it's my 'magnet eye' as well as my poison eye.

Not sure I represent anyone but I actually found it highly amusing and interesting to read harem pants, bermuda shorts, long skirts on short women and peep toes are common poison eyes! (They are all characteristic of what I wear.) I don't like to see leggings as pants, overly tight anything, heels so high the wearer looks like she can hardly walk, and I am sure there are others. I do like to try to understand other points of views, so reading everyone's poison eyes is ok with me.

Running shoes and skirts/dresses, common in the early weekday mornings as corporettes commute to work and very common among religious women who only wear skirts. I cannot stand the look, even in environments that consider the look 'normal.' Maybe having problem feet that confine me to sport shoes 24/7 makes me feel resentful of women who aren't looking hard enough for comfortable options! And that 5'10 model with her midi or mini, wearing black Nikes? Nope, nope, nope.

I am eternally grateful that running shoes w/skirts are more acceptable, as running shoes are so much healthier for the feet and back, but I still think it looks hideous. I wish I didn't.

The only real poison eye/cringe inducing fashion faux pas for me is ... Extra choking tight, lump exemplifying .... bodycon lycra/viscose clothes on any wearer who doesnt have the perfect VS model body. And yes, I see loads of those here!

Seriously ... There are so many things that would make one look beautiful and alluring no matter what their shape or size. Why not just size up? Beats me!

Otherwise I am game for anything and everything ... Harems, culottes, Birks, otk boots, sneaks on plus size petites, Angie's jodhpur jeans, even leggings as pants when the top is a tunic ... Why not? The fabbers who come in all shapes and sizes make everything look hot! I may not wear them because of various reasons ... But I love how everyone else wears them

I don't really have one for others to be aware of it, perhaps the odd case I see something really ill fitting or irrealy nonpractical! I do have mines, but they are too many to list them:-).

OMG Isabel, opaques with white crotch instead of real leggings??? This terrifyes me:-(. But then, I got a good laugh on reshet's very detailed one:-). The peeptoes looking like mouth of death cracked me up, to...Haha, still LOL:-)). Thanx for the great thread Aziraphale:-)

Dresses over pants. It never worked for me, never will.

Really high heels are one of mine I guess. Especially as someone else said, when the wearer is having trouble walking in them. Or when they are also wearing super tight pants. Funny, on *me* I have a hard time with pointed toe shoes but I keep trying to find some that will work. I look down and feel like my feet are a mile long. I do have a "good understanding" as my MIL would say. I have a similar problem with other shoes too as I can easily start feeling like a clod in many larger shoe styles.
