What makes an appropriate jean?

I would really love your help with this. There are very few jeans on the market (I've tried many) that work for me these days. Largely because they're not high rise enough. In particular I have found only one pair of skinny jeans with a high enough rise. The Express Mia Ultra Skinnies. Unfortuantely they are phasing them out. The physical store locally didn't have it, nor could they help me with locating it at other stores. I looked online and the darker wash that I prefer is out. However, they do have it in my size (4 regular) in this more faded wash.

Now, I mainly need these skinny jeans for smart casual work dressing. I tend to wear them with longer tops. I have never before bought faded jeans, I only buy dark wash. I'm 43 years old. Do you think I can get away with buying these lighter wash skinnies and doing smart casual with them. With tops and jackets and maybe pearls to make them dressier? Or should I just continue my search for higher rise skinnies elsewhere? I would much rather wait and get the right thing if that's the consensus than get something that's not the right solution.

I say go for it. I am a older than you and I wear a similar wash all the time...I just DRESS it up more. For me ...the lighter the wash on the denim , the more I tend to wear white on top...like a white silk(or like) structured jacket, your best jewelry...strappy heels or pumps. I like the idea of your pearls It never fails to work for me:)

I think you can do it. Did you see Kyle's post on the blog where she dressed up a faded pair of jeans? But I don't feel like they take the place of dark denim. They're more like a neat bonus. If you ended up buying them, would you still feel a void in your wardrobe? If so, it may be worth it to just continue the search.

Of course, if you can, having both in your wardrobe is probably the best option.

I'm with you, I have the same problem, I'm looking for a dark denin skinny jeans with a higher rise and I only find low rise or even ultra low eh eh..

You can wear a more faded denin with 43, totally agree and dress it up (nice heels, nice jacket) the problem is that I don't feel it is appropriate to work (my firm has a business casual code)..

I say .. go for it and in the meanwhile maybe you'll have lucky and find another pair with a darker wash.. well fitted jeans are never too much!

I think the others are right, this wash can be dressed up beautifully and with a white shirt and pearls would look fantastic no matter what age you are. However, I believe a dark wash does work better for smart casual dressing.

If I was in your situation I would order the jeans and try them with various outfits in your wardrobe. Maybe post a pic for Angie's appraisal.

It's such a bummer that high-rise skinnies are difficult to find. I tried on a pair of dark wash Red Engine high-rise skinnies last week, and thought they were great. Unfortunately, I can't find them anywhere online, and the price was much higher than the Express jeans.

I think the dark wash is much more versatile for work. Sure, you can dress up the lighter wash, but it takes more effort.

Are you petite, Sihaya? Because if so, the new Gap skinnies might work okay for you. Because I am short-waisted and petite, the rise is just high enough on me.

Sihaya, I agree with the above comments. You can definitely wear those washed-out jeans by dressing them up. I prefer darker jeans because it does take less effort to look spiffy in them. Lighter washes flex your creative muscle which is a good thing.

Sihaya, you'll look very fashion forward in the lighter wash. It's not your age, but how you wear it that matters. You have the right idea!! (I'm 60.)

Shiny - I don't know the actual measurement of the rise that works for me. Basically I try to look for something that goes as close to my belly button.

Laura - I'm short (5'3") but longer limbed so usually not petite. However, with a relatively smaller torso, maybe the petite thing will work. I will get myself to Old Nay, Gap, and UO. Thanks all for the suggestions.

If I end up getting these Express lighter wash ones too, I will definitely post a picture.
