What on earth!! You all must have been petrified! I am extremely relieved to hear nobody got hurt and that you and your family are safe, Anne. Hopefully they'll be able to figure out what caused this, and fingers crossed the insurance covers everything.

Hang in there!

Oh no Anne! Scary stuff. Hope it's resolved soon.

What a shame, Anne! I'm glad you are all okay but it certainly puts a damper on the long weekend!

Thanks guys. I am on DHs phone so I am posting a few more photos that we're earlier than the one I took. Pic 2 is insulation that fell out.
I am afraid I indulged in a fair bit of comfort eating yesterday!

Wow. I would be mad at the building company. I'm glad that you are all safe.

Thanks Sisi. We did know when we bought this house 2 years ago that it was a bottom of the pack 30 year old project house! But we thought that would mean likely having to replace appliances, no ceilings

It didn't have any insulation, which we just had put in a few months ago, either. But that isn't very heavy, so the ceiling should be able to take it.

The assessment is tomorrow, and they'll determine if the damage was weather related (and thus covered).

The room is very cold, since there's no point in heating it, and not very light, so we are using our front lounge room at night more.

Looks like (though not completely certain) our insurance will cover it. They are putting plastic in for the moment. Not sure when it'll get fixed.

It has been so cold I've worn my puffer coat in the kitchen, and keep having trips in to the heated front room to warm up!

Good news about the insurance, but still, wow.

Gosh, I didn't realise it was still so cold for you! I hope the insurance comes through.

Actually today it just got warmer! And yesterday the builders put black plastic to make a temporary ceiling. Smells a bit weird.

Oh my GOSH Anne, this is CRAZY. Keep us posted!

Oh, Anne, what a nightmare! Glad to hear you are all okay and that you now have some temporary cover.

just saw this, anne! wow. glad the family is safe and sound if a little dusty. how is everyone coping a week in?

Oh my!! Thank goodness no one was hurt.

Thanks to all who chimed in in the last day. The black plastic is helping with the dust a lot, and so we are now cleaned up. The initial black plastic smell has gone too.

We are just having to use the place a bit differently. There's no light in the kitchen except in the pantry and over the stove, so I've found myself cooking more next to a window. I save any handwashing til morning when I can see details.

No word yet to absolutely confirm about the insurance or when the repairs are going to happen but it'll be quite a big job and will include painting (ironically it's the room that has last been painted, by DH).

In the first week we had lots of volunteers at church to host things that we usually have at our place, but with a few modifications (DH will stick some mobile lights up around ) we should be back to normal with that. (These are not fancy events!)

Oh goodness, what an ordeal!! I am so sorry. I hope this can get fixed soon. It's not fun to live in limbo...

I just saw this. How horrifying! I am impressed by your calm, especially since I think I was holding my breath as I read this thread. I sure hope your insurance covers all this.

This is just incredible! Have they figured out why it fell yet? I guess it wasn't sheetrock nailed to the rafters.

Thanks guys. Sarah - that's true, but in another sense you can get used to all sorts of things!!

DonnaF - still not for certain sure. The latest news is that the insurer are sending out another builder to do a quote in a few days. Which sounds like they are planning to cover it.

Ginger - If they have, they haven't told us! I think it was sheetrock (I had to look that up, we have different terminoloty here) and I think it was glued to the rafters (rather than nailed)

So, today the last aspect of the repair just was finished! The new ceiling was put in over a month ago, the lighting just after that, then last week it was painted and finally today the aircon was connected to new vents.

And not a minute too soon. Look at the picture of our outdoor/indoor thermomenter that my DH sent me! (112/ 81 F)

Great news, Anne. I'm glad it's all fixed.

Oh yay!! Excellent timing (weatherwise, and with the upcoming holidays). I'm so glad everything is sorted, Anne. (And I bet you could use some peace and quiet just about now

Congrats on having it done. What a crazy thing to have happen. And those temps are way hot!
