Shorts and mini-skirts. And a bikini. Yes, I am 47. No, I don't care.
I took an interstate flight last weekend and two of the men on the plane wore those tank tops with no sides. I figure if it's OK for men to wear shirts that expose their nipples in public, then I am all good with showing a bit of leg!

Wearing sheer hose with skirts/ dresses ALL the time.

Wearing socks with loafers and oxfords --I give myself credit for wearing them both with and without "visible" socks, though , depending on the pants and the weather, so I feel like I have 2 different looks and get more use from some favorite shoes.

Trying to " get away with" non- pointy toes.
Wearing more open necklines despite very long neck. Again, I also wear cowls& turtles, but I don't make it a point to mitigate the long neck always, and I just like some tops with certain necklines, for some reason.

Oh my goodness. Where to begin?

Platform shoes. Wide legged pants. Oversized silhouettes on my relatively slender frame. Repeatedly failing to dress my large bust in a flattering manner. Unfashionable shapes that I happen to think suit me. Fashionable shapes that probably don't. Maxi skirts. Body con dresses that make me look a bit slutty. 80's vintage that I am obviously old enough to have worn first time around. Too many patterns in one outfit. Menswear.

Those are just things I can think of right now. I'll probably come up with a few more during the course of the day.

I love fitted and tailored blouses. I can't explain the way they make me feel, but I always feel confident and "happy" when I wear them.

My natural and undyed, graying hair.

Flares, body con clothing in general, tops and dresses, opaque hose, chunky 3" heels on boots and shoes, low risers, bikini bathing suits, shoulder length natural gray streaks, big dangly earrings, long fitted jackets.

I wear boring classic round necked cardigans, and won't be getting rid of them, for budget reasons, but also I just like the proportions they bring to sweaters and skirts.

Ah, things in my closet that give at least one someone the squirmies: glitter boots, choker necklaces, harness belt, (faux) leather overalls, shrug pull over, knee-high Converse, OTK boots, jeggings, gold lame pants, my craft aprons... oh dear. Is my whole closet controversial? That's so weird, because I feel I hold back and dress very plain most of the time.

Wow, most of my closet made somebody's list. I must be very divisive.

Yay, we are all a divisive lot. I think that is excellent

I love reading this list--and finding a lot of my sins listed here.

My biggest "don't care" is long skirts even though I'm short. Yeah, even long full skirts, even though I'm really short. I love them, I love how luxurious and comfy they feel, and I love the way they move. This thread has given me confidence to wear them loud and proud.

I wear distressed jeans which I "shouldn't" because I am 59. I refuse to wear long cardigans because I think they look like bathrobes but I love my short cardigans. They will always be in my wardrobe. I wear body con tops because I prefer them. I am a "warm spring" but wear "autumn" colours. I also wear shorts that are short. I still wear a bikini. Cowboy boots, fringe jacket and probably lots of other stuff that is pushing limits.

Another super fun thread!

Hmm .... I will always wear comfortable shoes even if they weren't really on trend. Round toes still form a big part of my shoe wardrobe, because they are super comfy. I can't stand (literally in) uncomfortable shoes.

Oh ...and I am 33 and I will wear a tulle skirt

Fun thread! I still wear a bikini (just in my backyard pool, or on vacation where no one knows me). I am wearing my distressed, nay destroyed-- jeans anywhere and everywhere and really loving them. The clothes I pair with them are classic and plain so hopefully that makes them a little more age appropriate,

I keep smiling when I look at this post...What do I wear that is divisive...ok..how about...What do I wear that I have no clue that it is divisive...LOL...

I can think only of my Birks - not sure anything else I wear is divisive, really. I definitely see no people who are looking even remotely interested in fashion wearing my kind of Birkenstocks (that aren't Gizehs or Arizonas).

This was such an interesting read. When I am not at my heaviest, I wear a 2 piece swimsuit on vacation. I also wear my harem pants that are made from pareos in Mexico and have a few body con dresses.

I think perhaps it is just that the fabbers have the confidence to go against the trends rather than being divisive.

Yes I wonder if divisive was the right word. Maybe I meant polarising, or despite public opinion being different, or against prevailing trends.

What I have learnt from all the interesting replies that it is having the confidence to pick something as part of your signature look despite fashion trends or age appropriateness...

And it can also tie in with minimalism/search for perfection. For example in the case of my Mary Janes, they are not perfect, I do not adore them, but they are adequate for my lifestyle, and they are comfortable. I will ride that as long as I can....one day I will either wear them out, or in the meantime become so tired of them that I never ever wear them, or they will become back in fashion:)

Despite prevailing opinion, I wear... maxi skirts, Mary Janes, pussy bows, ruffles, fitted tops, rounded toes, and rounded collars/lapels.

The only thing I can think of is that I wear things that many women my age no longer wear--shorter dresses, for example. I'm not a believer in "age appropriate" dress. I wear what I think looks good on me and what makes me happy.

We've talked about this before somewhere, but I think even though I can buck a trend or wear what I want, sometimes I want YLF advice on how to make something I want or "need" to wear work better within an outfit. A lot of times this is about juxtaposition and proportions. I might not even agree or be able to wear it like that, but it's very helpful to get more ideas.

This idea is related to tweaking style than going full-on into all new stuff. Or item longevity, re-mixing, and less is more.

For some things I wear, I don't always have to wear exactly this or that, as long as I have the key element (staying warm, roomy toe box, torso-shortening, etc). If there is a "new' way to do that, I might be on board!

Like Janet, cowboy boots. But even more so, clogs. 70s Americana is fab.

Kiwigal, the sense of liberation is palpable in this thread! It's so easy, surrounded as we are by fashion mags and blogs, makeover shows and seemingly endless lists of rules for the proper way to dress for one's age, figure, coloring, job, etc, to feel as tense and corseted by expectations as any Victorian lady. When I first encountered this forum, I feared it would be more of the same, and was pleasantly surprised by the respectful, supportive, and joyful tone set by Angie and all the Fabbers. Funny, forthright discussions like this keep me coming back for more. As for my closet? Nothing too divisive in there, though I love floaty cotton sundresses that are no doubt "too young" for me; there's just nothing better in really hot weather. In Winter, I favor oversized, torso-obliterating chunky sweaters over pants--another no-no on someone short, I suppose, but I'm not about to give them up; they make me feel like a happy child.

Kiwi, thanks for staring this thread! It's made me feel inexplicably happy reading everyone's lists. I have so many soul sisters here.

Here's my list.
- Not having a hair style.
- Open cardigans, I seem to live in them this time of year.
- Sloppy oversized ponchos.
- Clogs (ok, just for work).
- Distressed denim (although I think I'm starting to move on).
- Sausage-casing skinnies. I still love wearing them. And bf loves me in them.
- Short shorts, worn in private because my bf loves them and they're great when it's hot. Falls in the not age appropriate category.
- Wearing lots of gray. And black. And other dark generally unflattering colors.

Grey hair & birks are my main ones

I am with Sharon...shorter shorts (not micro) and shorter skirts (not mini)...if you've got the body and live through hot Aussie summers...they are totally practical.

I've read this thread several times now; it's so entertaining. The fashion police in my workplace cringe when they see me wearing a man's shirt with a knot tied under the buttons to take up some of the fullness around the hem. I can also vouch for the comfort of clogs, Ugg boots, footwear with round or square toecaps and maxi skirts worn with short boots and scrunched thick wool socks.

Yes! Maxis with short boots & socks showing. Knee length skirts with socks showing. Just a lot of sock porn period, okay? I like socks. I was one of the 7 people globally who actually thought high heels with those delicate sheer socks looked cute for about 15 minutes ten years ago.
I also wear brown boots with black clothing. And gray clothing. Derp. Avert your eyes if you must.
I like to see people wear things that are sort of out of style, but suit them individually to a tee. It gives me hope for humanity.

Oh and with shoes I wear ALL THE TOES... no, not those primal shoes with individually articulated toes. But all the other toe boxes: pointy, rounded, almond, squared off... My feet (and toes!) enjoy the variety.
