Q&A about individual items, ensembles, and wardrobe

What counts as a cap sleeve?

I know that cap sleeves are generally not the most flattering style, so I'm trying to avoid buying any new shirts with a cap sleeve. That style is ubiquitous though! Anyway, I'm not sure I'm entirely clear what it even means, so I thought I'd ask.

Does something like this count as a cap sleeve, or is there enough of a sleeve there that it doesn't make the arms look bigger?

Is it better just to avoid short sleeves altogether if they don't reach the elbow?

No that isn't a cap sleeve, that is just a short sleeve. A cap just goes over the shoulder like this

That's right, I wouldn't consider that top to be cap-sleeved.

Cap sleeves *are* everywhere this season. I wish I had skinny arms so I could wear them!

You are right, short sleeves that come to the elbow (technically a 1/2 sleeve) are the most flattering. Regardless of the size of the wearer's upper arm often times the horizontal band on the sleeve hem visually creates extra girth either around the bustline or the upper body in general.

However we have to buy what's on the market, which is short sleeves.

Wow, I greatly covet that top.

I agree with the others. It's not a cap sleeve. I happen to like cap sleeves though. One of the few things I disagree with YLF on.

You are all SPOT ON. Such clever lasses.

Laura, the cap sleeve flood is very FRUSTRATING. Few woman wear this style of sleeve well. Maya, you wear cap sleeves well. Is that why you disagree?

Angie, I just meant that I don't think they're universally unflattering or in the same league as say, ankle pants. I like them on myself, and I don't find them all that unflattering on others. It's just my perception. I have read advice that is both pro and anti cap sleeve, ironically for the same reasons! My eyes happen to be on the side that sees cap sleeves positively. You can tell me all day that they are unflattering, but I just don't see them that way. I am reluctant to disagree with YLF, but it's not something I do all the time :)

Thank you for reiterating, Maya. We’ve had this discussion before. I just wanted to make sure that you had the same opinion and that I hadn’t missed anything. As intelligent, open-minded and tolerant lasses, we shall amicably agree to disagree :0)
