wedding attire -- can I possibly wear this?

We've got an evening wedding this Friday night. It won't be super formal (not black tie or heaven forbid, white tie!). I was going to wear something from a couple of years ago until I ran into this dress today at TJMaxx.

I already had the sandals and clutch. What do you think? Is this appropriate? Does it look good? I've never done such a sacky sack dress before.

I really like it but it looks pretty white to me to wear to a wedding. Perhaps it is the picture. Is the backdrop of the dress white or off-white?

The backdrop of the dress is white. It has a lot of silver on it too.

Oh my. I never even considered that I shouldn't be wearing white to a wedding! That's a good point.

Laura - I LOVE the dress. I had the same reaction to white. Also, just my preference but if I wear one shiny article of clothing, I want the rest to be different texture wise. So for me, with a shiny dress, I'd have a non-patent purse and shoes. However, this is just my personal bias since I like to mix and match things. I hope you can keep the dress even if you don't wear it to the wedding. It looks stunning on you.

I like the other dress, too. White, like black is no longer a no-no (unless it's head to toe white) for weddings.

Oh, I love the dress you got and that jacket. Wow! I'm not sure about wearing white to a wedding. I've heard that you can do it but some of those old style rules die hard with me. I think the idea of the jacket with a pencil skirt and fishnets is amazing. Makes my heart skip a beat, actually.

Hello sack dress twin, Laura! I LOVE the new dress! Gorgeous! I’d swap out the shoes to something matte. Too much shine at the moment. It’s KILLER with the tough edge turquoise clutch. I don’t think this qualifies as a white frock. I say go for it and wear it to the wedding. Fun :0)

I much prefer the new dress to the brown one, but I also LOVE the cream jacket (is it cream?). Fab with a black pencil skirt, bare legs and red shoes. Lots of options.

Yes, the jacket is cream-colored. Isn't it yummy? It's at least 10 years old and going strong. And can you believe that sack dress was $29? I'm so excited about it!

Does anyone have suggestions for a shoe color with the sack dress and turquoise purse? Yellow was my first thought.

I like the idea of red sandals with red lipstick. Cobalt blue, teal or turquoise is also good (but not for lipstick). Matte dove grey, perhaps. Are you planning of purchasing sandals, Laura?

I don't think it is too white - and it looks great on you! If you do a colored shoe then that will help as well.

I think the sack dress looks great on you! However, I'm going to have to disagree with some of the later posters and say I wouldn't wear this color to a wedding. Some things I read say no white is an outdated rule, while others say that it is still a no-no. Personally, I have known more than one bride who has told me they would be annoyed (or in a few instances, were annoyed) if someone wore white to their wedding. Personally, I think it's stupid, but some brides are sensitive about that, and I wouldn't want to take the risk.

In terms of a shoe color to pair with the dress, I have a white dress that I love pairing with kelly green shoes I have. I like the other suggestions as well. With a white dress, I feel like you can do a shoe in pretty much any color you love.

Laura, you look fantastic in that dress! Wow- I love how you've accessorized it, too. I also love the jacket though, and the outfit you thought about making with it sounds fab.

I'm really unsure about the colour thing. On one hand, I'm laid-back about that kind of thing and wouldn't care, BUT I can see how wearing a light colour close to white could be seen as a giant slap in the face to a bride. Marianne brings up a good point about other family members, too.

It's strange, though. Nowadays it's common for brides to wear a whole range of colours- white, ivory, cream, champagne, silver, gold, etc. Does this mean all these colours are now inappropriate for wedding guests? Like, the wider the options for brides, the narrower they become for everyone else?

This bride is the sweetest thing ever, from a small town in Iowa, and when I say small, I mean population in the hundreds. So most of the guests will be of the conservative ilk. Oh boy. The notion that one of the bride's relatives might look at me and think, "Who is she to upstage the bride?" makes me queasy!

Angie ... I might be looking for suggestions for a black pencil skirt. Yikes -- I don't have much time to shop this week!

Laura, if it were me, I'd really save the sack dress (which is killer) for other occasions, and look for a pencil skirt. I think the colour is awfully risky for a wedding, especially with conservative guests. I feel that a wedding is not the time to risk causing offense through clothing choice--better to be safe than sorry.

I like the dress and it's a great look for you. My first thought on seeing the photo was that the dress is white, and that's a no-no. I'm not sure what today's etiquette is, so I guess my viewpoint is old school. I'd steer clear of it.

You can upstage the bride in a red dress!

Laura, my perception remains unchanged in that I do not view this dress as white, especially with red shoes and a blue clutch. However, it’s important that there is no doubt in YOUR mind, so take your pretty little self off to Express, BR and CM for a simple black pencil skirt.

I'm late to the party, but I'm in agreement with Angie on this one. I am pretty traditional and still have trouble wearing a solid black dress to a wedding, but I wouldn't hesitate to wear your sack dress. To me, the silver pattern makes it acceptable. If it was all white, I might rule differently. But, it's not.

I do like both outfits - you look KILLER. I would probably decide last minute, depending on the weather. If it's going to be hot and muggy, the long sleeves might be too warm and I'd opt for the sack dress instead.
