Derek is a new Comedy-Drama by Ricky Gervais. He created it, wrote it, directs it and stars in it. I rate it amongst the best TV shows I've seen. I don’t know how something can be soooo incredibly sad and very funny at the same time. It is GENIUS.

This is the story line: Derek - Ricky Gervais - is autistic, and the kindest person in the world. The comedy-drama is about an old age home that is struggling to survive (a very real situation), and how Britain has forgotten about old people. Derek works at the home and is a role model to everyone. Hannah, the manager of the home is as kind and they’re best friends. I am in tears every night watching this incredibly compelling show.

This is my favourite quote from the series so far, by Kev, one of the other characters, who is a complete looser :

“Derek took the best shortcut you can, the only shortcut that’s good and the only shortcut that works. And that’s kindness.” - Kev

I highly recommend that you watch the eye-opening show. Each episode is 23 minutes.

I always love series suggestions and I agree- this one sounds compelling. If not only to see Ricky Gervais as "the kindest person in the world".

We have this on air at the moment in Australia I have only caught bits of it but it looks very good:) I have a funny relationship with Ricky Gervais and find only some of his work appeals to me but maybe I need to look more closely at this series

I have to agree, Ricky Gervais is a genius. I started watching Derek, expecting a comedy. Boy, I was wrong.... I had not prepared myself for the emotional roller coaster.
The character development is amazing, I even felt sorry for Kev ( it took a while!)

I started watching it, and it really is worth watching! It's funny but not in the in-your-face way you might expect from Ricky Gervais. It makes some wonderful statements about how we handle aging and how society treats older people, and about the assumptions people make about others based on first impressions. I was very wary of the programme fearing cheap laughs at the expense of the disabled and elderly but was pleasantly surprised to find a show which gently revealed the many sides of human nature.
