Q&A about individual items, ensembles, and wardrobe

Wardrobe Challenge: No Jeans

Last winter I wore jeans so often (I'm self-employed and I can get away with it) that I got sick of them. I didn't put on jeans all summer and didn't miss them. It got me thinking--why not try the same thing in fall and winter? I certainly have enough in the way of non-denim trousers, dresses and skirts to keep me going.

I don't dislike denim. I just want to wear something different for a while. I'm going to see how I feel going denim-free for a week.

Anyone else feel the same way? Or am I an oddball? Let me hear from you!

I'm actually in the opposite boat... Ylf has ignited a jeans renaissance for me as I rediscover the joys of denim. But as someone who avoided jeans for at least two years, I know your goal is totally feasible. What kind of climate do you live in? I imagine this undertaking would be more difficult in some areas than others.

Bless you, garmenta! I have just challenged myself similarly. I have only worn jeans once a week in the last three weeks. It feels fabulous.

Soon though with the rain and snow, I’ll be wearing jeans a lot more because it’s the only way to keep my feet dry and warm (wearing boots over skinnies that is). Skirts and frocks will still work for the rain but not for the snow.

Michelle, I totally see your perspective and it’s great too.

I'm trying to limit jeans and pants and get more use out of skirts & dresses. I live in a fairly casual place (and I'm a sahm) so I am getting some weird looks but over the years I feel that I have gotten in the rut of ALWAYS wearing pants - I guess it has to do with years of working in a lab environment where skirts were verboten. It makes no sense to me that I continued to do so even when my lifestyle totally changed and I had the freedom to wear whatever I want. This is not to say that I am not wearing denim or pants - I'm just making more of an effort to incorporate more skirts & dresses into my every day look. It becomes challenging as the weather gets colder but now that I have some boots, I can at least give it a go for the fall!

Garmenta, I'm in the same boat. After being unemployed for a while, I've resisted wearing jeans as much as I did last year despite being allowed to wear them most days of the week at work. (I'm not sure whether boots over skinnies are okay, though.) I couldn't wait to break out my skirts, dresses, and dressier pants when I got a job. Most weeks I only wear jeans once a week.

Nice post.

I was with you on this idea all spring and summer and actually have only been in denim about once a week and still wear skirts or dresses everyday ... because the moment the temp drops to 65.... I *freeze* and you wont get me out of pants all winter.....I want to get my dress and skirt fix while I can:)

BTW, I discovered I can't go "denim-free"--there are times when jeans are the best thing to wear. It's more realistic to try for less denim on a regular basis. So I'll work on alternating my non-denim trousers, skirts and dresses with jeans, as the weather, the occasion, and the spirit move me.
