Q&A about individual items, ensembles, and wardrobe

Volume on the Bottom

Angie is a strong proponent of volume on the top, hiding your waist etc with sack dresses, voluminous tops and the like. Honestly, this just doesn't really work for my body type - I have broad shoulders, a large bust and a short, undefined waist with slim hips. I have occasionally worn a top with some volume but add waist definition with a cardi on top with the x-button a la Shiny.

When it comes to dresses, my issue is that my hips are proportionally slim so the fabric falls straight down from my bust and doesn't really catch on my hips so I basically look like I am wearing a mumu.

However, having slim hips, I can wear volume on the bottom and I feel like it can help balance my top half. I think I wear flare leg pants/jeans well and have a couple of poufier skirts (pleated down yoke). I am interested in trying this style of skirt with the flat yoke:

Any ideas on styling this type of skirt (in terms of tops)? Tucking in seems like a must but that is usually a big no no for a short-waist & big bust.

Anyone one else wear volume on the bottom?

I love voluminous skirts and pants. I wear them all the time. You don't necessarily need to tuck a shirt into this skirt, just keep the top shorter and more fitted. I little jacket would look good with it too.

I am having a similar dilema at the moment. I have found that it works better on me if the skirt sits lower down than my natural waist. I will be wearing a dark slim fit top with a high neck, however a slight scoop may be preferable. It may help to a wear a sleveless style to create the illusion of a longer torso. I love this type of skirt with heels with a platform.

I think it will come down to trial and error.

I commented earlier on RoseandJoan's post that I also found it preferable to wear a fuller skirt a bit lower on the torso. I am shaped similar to you Shana, however I have a small bustline (but broad shoulders). My hips are narrow in proportion to my shoulders and I like having some fullness in that area to balance me out. If I tuck my shirt in, I need it to be fitted at the waist. I do have a couple of fuller skirts that I can wear with a shirt not tucked in, but they all have a wide waistband with gathering below. The top length is tricky, it has to hit in just the right spot and the shirt also has to be fitted in the waist area.

I agree that you'll probably have to do some experimenting to be happy with this look, but I really like it for my body type.

I don't think you have to tuck it in, but as everyone mentioned, making it sit a bit lower is better...otherwise it flares out too quickly, especially on a short-waisted body. That can make you look/feel stumpy.

I do not look good in voluminous/full skirts personally. I can't really put my finger on why. I just feel they look better on a longer torso and on a regular height person, or with heels. On petite me, they just look too overwhelming and I feel like a little girl. So when you try it, I would definitely stick to some sort of heel.

I have two skirts this shape and a figure similar to Donna's where I am balancing width at the shoulders. I like to wear a knit top that is fitted and ends just above where the volume begins on the skirt. An even shorter cropped vest, jean jacket or cardi over the fitted top works. So does a narrow belt at high waist over the fitted top.

A short (hits at the top of the hip) fitted blouse can work really well with a skirt that has some volume. It's a great silhouette from the 1950s and it still works.

Well, I was inspired by some photos of Reese Withersoon in some celebrity gossip rag that I was reading at the gym other day. Apparently, she's been sporting a fuller skirt look alot with glads, a tank with or without cardi. I think it's a very cute, flirty, summer look and I remember J Crew featuring skirts like this last year and earlier this year as well. It's probably not a YLF look - it's not smart casual or edgy at all but it looks fun:

Oh Shana, that's an adorable look. I think you have an idea in your mind about what a YLF look is, but there are SO many different styles represented here. Not everyone is edgy or smart casual (I rarely venture beyond casual, and I still get positive feedback). I think if you put something together that resembles that outfit, no one would have a thing to complain about.

I have a very similar body shape and I love a full skirt with a drop waist with pleats. This was a new shape for me this spring and I'm so glad I tried it. I agree, getting the top right is tricky. I have had some luck wearing a button down short sleeved shirt over this type of shape. Gives it a little more structure and dresses it up.

this is a cute one that I have my eye on, but since I have another one similar I am probably going to pass on it. Although, I see now it is on clearance and in my colors. Hmmm... :)

The skirt is lovely and it seems to me that is has just ther right amount of volume, you can use it with a fitted blouse and I think it works

shana, that skirt is adorable. I think you are on the right track balancing out with a full skirt. I was going to suggest something but remembered this post on Kasmira's blog: http://whatiwore2day.blogspot......skirt.html

Oh, and what she doesn't mention and I think would work, is a clean, classic V neck tee. Wear a nice chunky necklace and you'll be good to go!

I definitely think this look will work for you. I have a skirt this shape that I wore last year. I found that I definitely preferred band to sit above my hip bone because I think it flattered my narrow hips to allow the poofy part to flow over my hips. But you should experiment for yourself. Then I tucked in a cami and wore a cardi with several of the middle buttons buttoned. The cardi was the perfect length to end between in the middle of the waistband. It seems like it might be easier to find cardis and jackets that end at the ideal location once you've determined what the location is on your body.

I really like this look too! Casual and comfy is GOOD, esp. on hot summer days. This outfit would be perfect for that!!!!

Thank you ladies for the suggestions! I actually found a cute skirt with this kind of styling last week when I was looking for white cardigans (which incidentally I did not find). I need to play around to figure out the right kind of top to wear. My biggest issue is that most of the tops I have/can find right now are too long - even petites because I have such a short waist. I might go with the tucked in cami plus cardigan route. I will definitely post results if/when I am successful - really don't want to have another closet orphan on my hands.
