Undercut hair trend...

I am surprised by how popular this trend has become, and embraced by all ages of women. I am especially surprised by how popular it is with women in my age range (50-60 yrs) where I have seen the #1 variation popping up a lot this summer, but also #2 and #3 (which has been around for a while.) I see all 3 variations daily in the Big City.

My last 2 cuts have been undercuts at nape and about an inch along the hairline on both sides while letting the top grow. #4 is my objective and I am almost there. I really like having the hair off the back of my neck, and the feminine length at the front.

What are your thoughts on the undercut as a hairstyle trend? Will it be around for a while? To what do you think it owes it's appeal?

Ooh, I love it in grey. Of course #2 is faux grey, since she looks like she's about 25..

One of our newer members just posted her new undercut like this, and Greyscale also has this type of cut.

A friend of mine has hair almost exactly like #2. Hers is real grey but she is a youthful 52.

I think #4 will be cool on you. Do you think you will like it? What will the advantages be?

I love this . One of my best friends had this done underneath her sort of pixie bob- one side and the back are undercut but don't have to show . It's so cool. To what does it owe its popularity ? I don't know . Maybe that what was formally really radical is now more mainstream - like piercings and tattoos . I'd do it in 5 minutes but don't quite have the hair for it texture and thickness-wise .

Suz, it looks a lot like the pic below now. It is very wash and go, and with more length, I'm getting banana curls vs uncontrolled volume.

Those are all gorgeous examples, especially 4 which is understated and sophisticated...good hair goal! I personally like it best on short haired gals. I have no idea about its longevity...I would be interested to know!

SarahTheWhite also has a cut like that and it is very flattering on her as well.
The style looks high maintenance to me but the examples that I have seen look nice.

Aww, thanks, Carla. Yes, I was often compared to her when I had my hair in a pixie like this and it was red.

I think this is a great style for your hair. It sounds like it is helping it behave the way you like.

I think it has both practical and fashion objectives - here it is very popular on males, here are some examples from a child to a hipster male to a famous rugby player.

We can be hair sisters! That last photo is great - I think it'll be a good look on you. I wonder if I'll ever cut my hair shorter like that.

It was a popular style for punk-ish queer women around me in San Francisco a few years ago (and apparently even more so in NYC - my gay NYC-raised grad student was teasing me about SF being a few years behind), and from there I've watched it become more mainstream. It also got a boost from a well-known DJ (Skrillex) though I heard more people mocking his hair than admiring it.

It feels daring but safe enough, if that makes sense. Especially the shorter versions, I think - it is just the right amount of sharp contrast between the short and longer sections. And it's pretty low maintenance day to day, even if you have to keep up with trimming it regularly. I like my haircut because even if I'm wearing my most basic tee and jeans and sneakers, I know I'll look a little bit edgy.

I saw an older woman with hair just like your first photo at Nordstrom the other day and decided I want to look like her when I'm older. Sadly I probably can't (texture and color too different) but that's ok!

It's a cool hair cut! I love the cut on the grey hair. It makes the hair look healthy and carefully considered.

I had a variation on #2 a couple of years ago, I loved it for a while and then grew bored. It has been a complete pain to grow out and given I am very contrary when it comes to my hair length I am unlikely to go their again.

It seems like a twist on the fade, which I first noticed on young black males. It's a cool look for those who look good in short hair. It wouldn't work for me, plus I feel like my wardrobe wouldn't work with it, for some reason!

My hair stylist wears her hair like #3 and I'd like to try #2 but I'm afraid to change because my hair is working for me. For some reason, I've always liked to change my hairstyles but have often been disappointed with the new look. I'm glad RoseandJoan wrote about her experience of growing the style out, that doesn't sound like something I want to go through.

I think women, particularly in midlife, are looking for ways to be a bit bolder and have a bit of fun, without looking like a teen. No Coachella boho with flowers in their flowing locks for them!

I certainly have enough hair to do this --- my hair has to be thinned aggressively, but it's not fitting my personal style journey at the moment. I enjoy it immensely on others, and think it's a stronger style statement -- with less commitment -- than a tattoo or unusual piercing.

Go for it, Carla! It would look fab on you (a little boldness before retirement), and it would be cool and practical for your athletic pursuits.

I think it's a bold statement, and I like it for those who can pull it off. My oldest DD, who has thick hair, had her hair done like this for a while. She recently shaved it all off; God only knows why. I'm going to ask her when she comes to visit next week.

It's getting more popular here too, although slow to catch on with women older than 30 unless they are artists/creative types. I would be tempted to try some version of it myself but my hair grows very quickly and this would be a PITA to maintain, plus the greys are coming in fast and furious, and it would be tough to hide them with this kind of cut. I guess for now I'll stick with my more subtle version of this.

Lots of young women around here have variations on #3.

I'm a little nervous about growing mine back in eventually. But I did a trial run - the shaved part got a little bigger than I meant, so I let a 1" wide line of it grow back in (at the back, going up from my ear). It blended smoothly into the longer hair and bobby pins kept the curls from floofing out too much.So I imagine I could grow it all back in a similar way.

I like the look because it's pretty but not sweet. The boy version, tho, I find ho-hum. Good mind you, just ubiquitous in the extreme.

Also, I don't want to upset anybody, but the last time NYC was current, the year was 1979...mwahaha. Not that SF is. Ohio is the place to be.

Janet's so right that this would be impossible to maintain on darker hair with gray roots. BUT, I am closing in on all white in the roots department. My stylist assures me he'll give me a great pixie when I decided to go from dark brown to pure white. However, I am way too big and have features unsuited to a pixie. Believe me, I have tried them and loved them, but a "regular" pixie -- whatever that is -- is just not going to work for me next time. Picture #1 is making me think (one day -- not now, I am not ready) I might let the roots grow out white for maybe a half inch and then have it cut this way. I realize it would take a year or so to grow out the white in the longer top, but it might be cool in two-tone? Una managed to do this so well! Am I totally crazy or might that be a cool idea?

I had an asymmetrical something like this in the 80s. But with spikes. And sometimes colored hair mousse. It was rather high maintenance to keep it looking just so.

I would wear 2 in a heartbeat if I could pull it off. I used to do this to my hair all the time in the 80s and 90s! LOVE IT.

Mostly I see one sided undercuts here in the achi. I've seen them for a few years now
