Q&A about individual items, ensembles, and wardrobe

Undecided about this blazer

A while ago I asked about trying the new longer, boyfriend blazer and decided to try it after getting the green light here. I got this black one ( it has a tiny bit of a sheen, like my coated skinnies, but more subtle) and I simply can't decide whether it works or not.

I would wear it with an outfit like this, although with a looser top ( that I currently do not have) - here are photos of it both buttoned and unbutonned:

I don't know whether either of the length and the shape are flattering. I realized that the fit at the hips is bothering me, it flares too much out, so here it is pinned in the back:

So what do you say? Should I return, keep as is or keep&alter?

Many thanks!

Hi Tanya,
I am not crazy about the length on you. I think that it needs to be either shorter or longer. I thought that the new style boyfriend blazer was a bit longer and not quite as fitted.
This is an example

Would you like that style?

I remember these in the 80's with shoulder pads and the cuffed sleeves.
It looks better pinned back but I think that you can find something better that does not need to be tailored.

It looks better pinned back but I also wonder if it is the right length. I think this might be an Angie question because I am not used to seeing this look and my eye hasn't really adapted to it yet. I think it has potential though.

I am completely into the look! (It took precisely one second – 80’s flashback). I can’t wait to get mine.

It’s not too baggy at all, Tanya. If anything the look is supposed to be baggier. No pinning. That’s not right. The silhouette is more like the feel of the slouchy boyfriend cardis. Jean points to a good UO example. Yay! This is exciting. We can always count on Tanya to push the fashion envelope with being first to try something new. WOOOHOOOO!

Thank you very much everyone!

Angie, are you suggesting that I keep this one or look into the slouchier version like the UP one GG posted? I am not bothered by the slouchiness at all, more by the fact that it was sticking out at the hips. ( Thank you for the kind words. I like trying new stuff. I get bored easily). I actually like the UO one more that the one I have.

My suggestion would be to try the UO one too, Tanya. But I actually like the way the one you have sticks out at the hips. I know I’m not helping. Bottom line: this is a new shape – time to experiment.

I guess i have to get used to the look because I preferred the pinned version, but I honestly think the length is a little short. I agree with Angie that you are so good about trying new things and going for it - very inspirational!

Thanks Angie and Julijuli. I think I will return this one and try the UO version, or at least something very similar since that particular one is not available for purchase.

I don't know if that one is long enough or to your liking but it's another option.

Thanks Maya! I saw that one but I think it would be a bit short. I think i after something like this, but at a UO price :)

Before reading, I was going to say I preferred it unpinned, in the first photo. It's so fun to see a new silhouette! Although I agree with Jean that my point of reference for boyfriend jackets would be even looser with rolled sleeves, but I do appreciate an update on the look the second time around.

Posted 9 months ago

I like this jacket on you. It's definitely longer and looser than what I'm used to seeing you in. But it seems you have been gravitating toward less fitted clothing lately. Personally, I really like it, and actually prefer it unpinned.

Tanya,

You look beautiful as always! I love the jacket on you, as I love everything else you posted lately (the skinnies, the vest, the last week outfits ... ). Basically you could wear a sack and still look fabulous.

I am wondering - are you trying to wear less fitted clothing because you feel that it is more appropriate for your work environment? Or is it a fashion-forward experiment?

What I recall from spending two years at MIT (postdoc) is that the students often seem to roll out of the bed and come as they are :)

Thank you all very much!

I decided to return this jacket and look for a slightly slouchier one. This one curves a bit too much in the waist to achieve the proper look.

HannahC, you are completely right about how majority of students ( and not just students) look here, so it's not difficult at all to stand out, and sometimes that is not good. As for the less fitted clothes, it's neither of the two that you mention - I think. I seem to gravitate towards them lately, but I can't really tell why. maybe I am just bored so I am trying to change things up a bit. But I don't think I will be wearing loose things all the time, just occassionaly, I'll still wear fitted things most of the time.

I think we're confusing two looks:

o Boyfriend blazer
o New longer length blazer (much more fitted)

But both are at that new LONGER length. It’s going to be VERY interesting experimenting with this style. People are going to need to adjust to the look. The length can’t hit you in the wrong place either. I’m up for the challenge. I’ve successfully got one client in the look already. Let’s see how many more people bite.

Angie, Please Please, Please blog on this.

A-ha! So, Angie, are you saying that the blazer I tried is the second version ( new longer length blazer- much more fitted) in which case it actually does not need to be slouchy? And that the length is OK on me so I should keep it after all? Sorry that I am a bit confused. If that is actually the case then I will keep it ( it was an amazing bargain) and look for a boyfriend one too!

Posted 9 months ago

Sure, Joy. It's on my list.

Yes Tanya! That's precisely what I'm saying. If you want to cover both looks, then purchase both jackets. I’m not sure what I’m going to do yet. I might go baggy for a change.

Posted 9 months ago

Thank you so much Angie! I am sorry I got a bit lost. I will keep this one then. I might purchase the boyfriend one too if I find a good deal on it.

I'm finally catching up with this thread; I wish I could cross-reference my own blazer thread with this. Angie, thanks for clarifying that there are at least two different blazer styles - boyfriend and fitted, both at longer lengths. What I don't know yet is whether my existing Club Monaco blazer is a boyfriend one, or something else entirely (I don't think it meets the fitted criteria.) Would love to learn more about it through a blog entry :-)

You are perfectly on track, Tanya :-)

Have I seen your CM blazer, Antje?

Posted 9 months ago

Not in person, Angie, I think. Here are two pictures featuring the blazer in party mode:

In the thread I started ("What's a boyfriend blazer?") I was wondering what constitutes a bf blazer, whether this qualifies as one, and how I can style it for daytime outfits.

Totally sorry to hijack your thread, Tanya, but it seemed to become one with great general guidance on blazers.

Posted 9 months ago

Do not worry about hijacking this at all Antje, I have reached my conclusion anyway! Please post away!

Btw, the links you posted here do not work for some reason ( at least for me), although they did work on your thread. Strange.

Posted 9 months ago

THanks Tanya - I corrected the links above, should work fine now.

Posted 9 months ago

Hmmm. Not sure, Antje. Need to see it when we next have tea.

Very late in the game, but I just wanted to say that I love the blazer as is on you Tanya.I vote that you keep it and maybe get a boyfriend blazer as well. I'm convinced you'll make both looks your very own in no time!

By the way, I bought a similar length blazer at the Zara sale yesterday, so I'm hoping to get some pointers from you;-)

Off topic. What shoes are those? I don't think I've seen you post them. Oh and I loved the blazer.

Posted 8 months ago

Hi Mattie, those are my fairly old shoes, that I only wear for going out and such, beacuse the heels are 4" tall. They do appear occasionally in my posts, here's an older photo where you can see them better:

http://s300.photobucket.com/al.....CN3046.jpg

They are by Steve Madden, and the model is called Paola or Paula.

What a pretty picture of you all dressed up Tanya.
I just want to pipe in here and say that I think you look great in the blazer in the picture you posted. I don't know what it is refferred to as but it looks good on you. I like where it hits and the way it curves out. Really cute and different and it just struck me as a great jacket. I hope you keep.
