Uber-distressed denim skirt: too much?

I've been eying this skirt at H&M for a while now. It fits well and is of course longer on me than the model. It IS quite shredded; in fact, I'm thinking I'd put a patch behind one of the holes to keep from damaging it more. I have not been able to find a casual denim skirt I like elsewhere for a price I'm willing to pay (not a lot considering seasonality and style). And black is of course a no-brainer for me.

But is it too much/too MDAL? Be honest! I'd wear it in place of shorts.

I like the "v" in the back! I don't think it reads too MDAL on its own unless you style it that way ... and you won't. Give it a try.

I don't think it's too much, but I'm not super-keen on the distressing. It looks unnatural to my eye.

I like it. Length would be the issue for me, but if it's right on you, I would give it a go. Interesting and fun.

I like it too. I think the dark colour balances out the shredding, which doesn't seem too much - and it seems very you!

It looks like it would suit your style - I think I'd go for it and see. It's a great price and mostly cotton, which to me is a good thing.

To be honest, it's the artificial look of the distressing that makes the skirt look "teenager" to me. But now I'm laughing at my own comment--that there a distinction between teenage rips and tears and "sophisticated" distressing. So it's probably safe to ignore my hairsplitting and buy the skirt.

I like your idea of putting more fabric behind the distressing, especially if it's see-through. I say go for it--looks like your style, and I can just picture it on you with your cool shoes and attitude. I think it would look good with tights, too, for winter, with tall boots or short ones.

I like it as a shorts replacement. It's not as distressed as I expected from your description, and considering that it is a little longer on you, I think it could be perfect.

If you like it why not give it a try? Black goes with everything so it could be very versatile. I love the look, just too short for my taste, I don't wear anything above the knee. Pair it with the right blouse and it would be super cute and not MDAL at all.

Yes from me. I have black distressed shorts that look almost exactly like this!!! But somehow....on the body...they don't look uber-distressed or "wanna-be" at all!!! I think black doesn't show distressing the way blue denim does.

I really really like the skirt for you, Una....I think this denim skirt has just the lil extra 'edge' you need to be able to make it work with your wardrobe.

I am with Jenn. I don't have any problem with the length (on you) or with distressing (at any age) but the distressing here looks bit fake/contrived to me. But you can only try and see

I personally don't think that the distressing is too much. I think that the only way to know whether it will read as too "young" will be to try it.

It's worth a try, I think it suits your style and you'll make it not look MDAL by what you wear with it. Like, if you wear it with a tight crop top that shows your midsection, oops, MDAL; but if you wear it with a semi-tucked drapey top, you'll be good to go!

I added an iron-on patch behind one of the shredded holes (at my thigh) in a pair of my distressed jeans. It makes the fabric stiff but at least I'm not flashing anybody.

I vote get it and play around with it in your closet and see what you come up with.

I'd try it Una, I think it would look super cute on you. Somehow a shorter skirt obviously worn instead of shorts is not MDAL whereas a dressy night out one does. Hope it works out.
