Trying tops with culottes - YouLookFab Forum

Ok, here are some attempts to style the culottes with more boxy, cropped tops.
Apologies for the brightness of the Brisbane morning sun- thank goodness Spring has arrived!
1.This top has side zips and is actually quite square in shape. Husband like this except for the sneakers (which he doesn't get at all)
2.I think this is a better length, but not sure that I like the pattern. Also, middle-aged middle on show.
3.This is my favourite top from last year. The photo is not great because it is a faux-snakeskin front which reflects the light. I think the shape is good, but is it too long?
4.And in a completely different universe....sandals for Deborah and my husband, and a top my husband loves. I think he enjoys the retro 1920's vibe - he has a huge crush on Miss Fisher. I am not convinced that this works.

Do any of these work? Comments and advice welcome. Thanks for looking.

I actually love the last one the best, Sharon! I love the long top with the long culottes. Now I need to send you my opera length pearls and the outfit will be complete.

I really like the last one, too. Very elegant! And so fluid.

I also like #2 a lot. The black and white top with the sneakers appeals to my matchy-matchy gene. And I see no reason to reveal that sliver of slender middle -- in the right setting, of course. I do see how it might feel awkward in some settings.

The culottes themselves are beautiful. I am assuming you also tried them with more fitted tops in an earlier post that I have somehow missed?

I think I'd love the top in #1 with some sandals, too. For some reason the sneakers don't sing to me in that outfit.

Love all of them, especially #2, 3 and 4. #4 is extra elegant. Nicely done. I vote killer all round - and thanks for humouring me by styling those gorgeous culottes with another top.

The proportions do have a 20s/30s feel somehow, don't they? I really like 4.

#4 is my favourite, then #2. I'd like to see a different shoe with #1 too.
Do you have a cropped knit? After seeing #4 the right knit would be fab too

Suz, I haven't tried fitted tops. Most of my tops are pretty loose, but I was thinking of trying this belted with a button down shirt. The top in #1 has given me no end of trouble with styling.It is not quite enough of anything to work with the bottoms in my wardrobe. I may try it with sandals as you suggest.

Laura, 1920's are a favourite in our house, particularly with hubby!
Caro, I do have a cropped, long sleeve knit, but it is just a bit short to wear without an under layer. I may try it with a camisole.

I actually like all of these tops! However, I do not like the shoes. They look like wrestling shoes to me with that very thin sole. Are you committed ot wearhting these with sneakers? if so, would you consider a low-top with matching laces and a thicker sole, rather than the high-top with thin sole and contrast laces? I think these are adorable with the sandals. They read dressy to me, so I'd probably stick with a leather shoe, personally.

Thank you for the sandals;). 2,3,4 with sandals are fab. 3 is my fave and I think 4 is gorgeous.

I am a fan of #4, too. I am craving a stacked mid-heel oxford with #4--don't know if you do that sort of shoe or not? (Is it too weird to be re-dressing you in my head?)

ETA: Found a photo of exactly the shoe I was thinking of paired with culottes. Must have been all this talk of the 20s and 30s.

2 and 3 are my absolute favorites! I want those culottes! 2 is just smashing! That middle age midriff puts my early 30s paunch to shame.

I love 4 but also like 3 very much.

I prefer the sandals but the hi tops are fun, and probably very comfortable. I think it is my draw to figure flattery that makes me prefer the heeled sandal rather than the sneakers.

Jenava, I am not committed enough to sneakers to purchase a new pair just to wear with these The ones I am wearing are white leather and have about a 2cm sole. I really just tried them to see how they looked. I have a fairly dressy aesthetic so I think heels will be my default option.

These are great culottes!
I too prefer them with sandals or a little heel.
I am just wondering... could they be a tad too long, maybe?
I really like the tops in 3 and 4.

#2wins hands down, the pattern of the top bookending the laces on the sneakers and imparting integrity to the look.
Sandals do create a Phryne Fisher vibe, that's for sure.
