Trying out mom jeans

A couple of days before I decided to give culottes a try I was contemplating cropped hems and higher waistlines and decided to try these gap jeans. My current go to comfiest pair of jeans are gap girlfriends. These are her higher waisted cropped cousin.

These pics are straight out of the shipping bag. I know the fit will change a little with a day's wear. I'll post pics of where they've settled to later tonight.

firstly, they're comfy right off the bat. It feels really weird to have pants at my waist and these are really up there, probably 2 inches above navel.

I like them with the longer shirts that come to my hip and cover my belly. I'm not sure I would wear them out with the shorter top. I wonder if a darker rinse would make me less tum conscious? But then they'd practically be a duplicate of the girlfriends I have.

I agree, I like them with the shirt (which is how I prefer to wear my jeans). I like the way the shirt is fitting smoothly due to the higher waist. What are your thoughts about shoes?

These loafers are my answer to every question related to shoes lately. I think they'd also be cute with the Freebird Quails, but those are more for dress up days.

I like them with the longer shirt but then is there a point to the higher waist? Glad they are comfy though! And I like this wash.

That's what I'm wondering too, Una. im not sure there's any way to make a high waisted pant work with a tummy. If there is I'd like to figure it out, though. I do think even if these don't work with shorter tops they will give a more flattering line with sweaters or knits that tend to settle into my pants' waistline. They are a couple of fingers below my true waist though. Maybe I need to go even higher? I think I'd look like Ed Grimmly then.

I do like my high rise pants for one reason -- they help define my waist and eliminate entirely the muffin top effect. That said, I still don't like them with short tops as well -- except my white ones -- go figure.
I do think they have a point, I guess I'm saying!

P.S. Do you have a link for those adorable loafers?

Traci, I love you in #3 -- pretty! Are these the Best Girlfriend jeans, or a different style? I've worn my Girlfriends into the ground the last two years and am looking for a go-to Gap jean in a new style -- one with a high rise would be fab.

Here they are Beth Ann! I find them very comfortable, which I was nervous about with patent, but I've had good experiences with Earth brand.

The thing I like about high waisted and tummies is the smoother line for any untucked shirt longer top. Not as many bumps!

Decision made! I'm keeping them.

I was playing around with my shirt and tried tying the waist. I walked through the family room and oldest daughter said Hey! Those are new. Hold still so I cAn see. Then she declared she likes them. Then youngest daughter said they make my legs look long and I yanked off the tags.

I'm glad you're keeping them, they are very flattering through the leg, and you found the right length of top to wear over. I like the tied shirt look. It's an interesting alternative to tucking that I haven't tried.

Keep them and wear them like in last 3(I use to do the same trick with longer tops:-)) and you are set to go!! I like to feel my higher waist sometimes, too:-). Oh, and love the tied shirt and the patent loafers to them, too! Perfect!

Thanks for working through that with me, everyone. It's amazing what a blessing from the kids does. I also got the added praise from oldest that the gingham shirt and loafers outfit was straight off of one of the Japanese ladies from our vacation that I had admired. I'm telling you, these kids really know how to butter me up.

Mauvish, thank you. It actually surprised me how vulnerable it felt to share these pictures. I'm trying to shift my mindset a bit away from the idea that I have to dress to cover any hint of my tum at all costs. It's a fine line I'm trying to find because I know how ego crushing it is when I get asked when I'm due, so I obviously can't let it all hang out:)

Sharing pictures here and working through fit and styling gives SO much insight. I hope you'll try it.

I did go back and change the title of this thread to take out the "mom bod" reference. I was cringing every time I saw it. Self depricating is something I try to avoid and I realized it was also an unintentional slight to all the other moms with bods out there.

Stay tuned! Culottes are arriving later today.

I agree with the kids. Legs look long. Also digging the loafers!
My daughter is always giving the last word on my new clothes. I wonder if they r close in age? Mine is 12 going on 23.

Thanks, Traci! I'll look into the loafers for my own closet. I'm not really a loafer girl in general, but add patent and the game is on!

I'm really loving the gingham top with the jeans. The high rise looks deliberate and the leg line is long (as your daughter noticed). I think we're all in a big seismic shift away from skinnies and tunics as "the" silhouette.

And these don't look like "Mom" jeans -- they do look a retro -- like Liz Taylor, Marilyn Monroe retro -- and really fresh.

kikidee, mine are 14 and 19 next week! They are so stinking supportive. My oldest asked what my "fashion ladies" thought of the jeans and when I told her y'all approved she said she was glad because that was the right answer.
