Toronto gathering - me, Suz and ?

I will be in Toronto from 9/10 - 9/16. My sister's premiere is on the 11th. In chatting with Suz, the weekend seems like it would work best for a get-together. Would Saturday or Sunday work for a meetup for folks? And could someone who knows Toronto suggest a place? Lunch or dinner would be fine - I will be in the area of wherever TIFF is and not have a vehicle, but can use public transport or my legs. Hope we can figure out something!

I will likely be staying with friends in Riverdale -- assuming they agree to have me. If not, I could be persuaded to try an Air BnB with a friend.

Just spotted this - I'd love to join in on the fun! Plenty of room at the Mer-Palace for anyone who needs a place to stay. It's a bit out of the way (Whitby)but easy access into the city. I can make either Sat or Sun work. I'll pm Michelle to make sure she knows.

WooHoo! Saturday is better for me. I commute daily on the Via Train for work. My home is a little over 100 km east of 'the Big City'. I would stay overnight in the city on Friday for a Saturday get together.

Let me know as soon as things are settled. I have points for a free night at a hotel but need to book asap! If I can book soon, I might be able to put someone up as well!

The 'Queen Mother Cafe' would be a good place to eat lunch or dinner. Varied menu, that can accomodate most diets. Easily in the middle of things on Queen St.

I would love to join this gathering but I am already committed on Saturday so Sunday works better for me. I will most likely be taking a bus from Kingston that goes to downtown Union station.

Does Sunday work for everyone? I am going to go with a majority vote! And if anyone is coming for the festival, my sister says tickets for all films go on sale on the 6th... I am planning to see as many as I can!

Booked a downtown hotel for Friday night. One of my sons wants to attend a job fair on the 11th and the other one is keen on taking in some of the TIFF excitement, so this has worked out really well for us.

I'm going to see if I can snag a ticket for the 9:30 pm Friday showing of your sister's film and tickets for 'The Martian' for the boys. Brought home the Officiel Film Schedule yesterday, and went through it circling all kinds of films!

Una, I can put together a package of useful stuff and hand it off to you on your first day in town. I'm still new enough to Toronto that I know what can be confusing and what can be useful. I can also meet up with you any work day of your stay, for lunch and possibly get an afternoon off - if you need an urban sherpa!

I am just re-reading the chain here to see if we can figure out best date for everyone.

Seems that we may lose out on Mona if we meet Saturday - but Carla has a preference for Saturday.

Can Sunday work for everyone?

I just called the Queen Mother Café. If we are a group of 10 or so - we need to arrive before noon hour to get seating. (Patio might be nice) After that, it will get very dicey. They are also "reba" friendly.

For anyone coming from the east, Via (train) has a 6:45 am train (Kingston) that gets into Union Stn. At 9:15 am, with return at 6:35 getting in around 9 pm on Saturday. Round trip - tax in - Escape fare = $94 CA.

The earliest Eastern Lakeshore train on Sunday gets into Toronto after 1:30 pm.

From the west, the Earliest London train departs 7:36 am and arrives 10:04 on both Saturday and Sunday. The last train departs at 7:05 pm and arrives London 9:12 pm.

Saturday might work better for me as my sister has a second showing on Sunday. I'm not sure how late anything will go and with the four hour time difference I'm unlikely to be functional before 11 am... Carla, you are too generous! I am super excited to see Toronto - have not been there in 20 years! Am I going to be able to walk to a meeting place? I can also take the public transport or taxi with directions. Am happy to spend an afternoon with whomever is around - stopping, sightseeing, eating.

Mona, I hate to miss you! :(.

Thanks or chiming back in Una - seems like Saturday is the best option all things considered.

So can we make a tentative plan? Shall we meet at the Queen Mother Cafe at 11:30 am on Saturday? Could everyone who is planning to attend please post? If we have an earlyish lunch, there will be plenty of time for shopping after. And before for those coming in on the train.

I can make reservations once we have confirmed date/time and number of fabbers.

TO is very walkable and the TIFF stuff is clustered along King Street West - the theatre district, and home to 'restaurant row'. Queen St. Shopping is 3 blocks north. If the weather turns inclement there is the underground pedestrian walkway called the PATH which is also full of shops and a good place to get lost (I've got a map for you!).

The subway is super easy for North/South travel, but if you don't mind a 3o-45 min. Walk, you can walk up to Bloor St. For the Shoe Museum, the ROM (Royal Ontario Museum), the designer shops, Holt Renfrew, and 'The Annex.'

FWIW, folks with cars might take note: the Simcoe Place underground parking garage has all day parking for $15.00 flat rate and is easy to get in and out of. There is plenty of room, though sometimes it can get crowded when there is a Blue Jays game! - access is via Front St.
