Do you think it's possible to make something like this:

work for the office? Obviously, I'd layer and I don't have much cleavage at this point but the top would show a lot of skin above the bust. I'm on the conservative side when it comes to appropriate work wear so I'm wondering if I would just feel uncomfortable or if there's a way to have more confidence about it. If not, when would you wear such a top?

I personally would not wear this top to work, even with a cardi or jacket over it. I may be overly conservative, but I always figure you just never know when you may need to take your jacket off at work!!! The issue for me is more the racer back. I also can't imagine a cami or top you could layer under it, but maybe I have no imagination.

I would wear this to a night club or in the summer time on a very hot day. Actually, I wouldn't wear it at all because racer back styles look funny on me - I don't like my back. And I don't own a bra that would work, and I never go braless.

I'd agree with Shiny - this isn't an appropriate top for an office setting. The only way I could see it is under a suit blazer, and even then the neckline looks too low. A lacy cami underneath it would be hard to pull off without ruining the pretty shape and neckline it aready has. Plus, think of bending over to look in a drawer or leaning over a co-worker's desk to look at a computer screen: would this still be a good option for the moving around you do at your workplace?

I think it would be a great basic you could wear outside of work: with a great pair of dark jeans or slacks, a clutch, and some statement jewerly and heels for a night out, or with a skirt, dressy flat sandals, and a larger bag for a dinner with friends. Since the shirt is simple, remember to play up some accessories! Good luck!

For layering, I meant layering a jacket or cardigan over which I would not take off. I know you guys are right. Sigh. It's interesting though because in the jcrew store yesterday I saw a very similar top (tank instead of cross with a tie and little hole in the front) which was hanging with the suiting. Also there's this (the top picture with the yellow suit which has my original top)

I like jcrew clothes and the ensembles they showcase are very eye catching but I find they're probably not wearable unless you look like their models.

Patience, what about this top? It's not as low cut as the other one, and if you are not planning on taking a cardi or jacket off while at work, then I think it would be nice. I like the Papaya (thinking of getting it myself):

I don't think that this top will work for work, Patience. I'm conservative when it comes to things like that. Super for going out at night though, if the back detail works for you.

I tried this on - I love this blouse and really wanted it - but the XS was too large on me. I swam in it. They don't have it in petites. I don't know your size, but it really is a beautiful blouse.

That is a nice blouse, Patience, and there are colors at J. Crew that are on sale right now (not sure if Barton Creek one has them, but Domain has a few). Sale at Domain J. Crew was 25% off lowest price yesterday, it still might be going on today.

This style blouse tends to run big. I ordered the Joelle cami a few weeks ago in an 8, and it was huge on me. I want to reorder it in a 6, I think that would be much better.

I really love the top, and the other two suggestions. I don't think they are great for work, but would look fantastic in other settings. I want it! I think if you like it, it works for your body, and you have places to wear it, go for it. I also have to agree with everyone that Jcrew runs pretty large in their tops. I have a large chest (34DDD), and I still wear a size 0 in their tops! In other brands, I sometimes even have to go up to a size 6 to fit my chest.
