Thick Calves and Knee High Boots?
Hey everyone! I'm new here, and I did run a quick search on this topic and came up short, but point me to an existing thread if you know of one...
I have discovered that I have thick calves. So thick that I can't manage to zip up most dress boots. So think that even most rubber boots are tight around the calf. After an afternoon at the mall with my husband and attempting to try on at least thirty different pair of boots, I left with my self-image nearly shredded.
Last night I took a deep breath and measured the circumference of my calves. They are about 15" around.
Any hints?
Thanks.

Oh, and for what it's worth, I wear a size 9 or 9.5 and I have narrow, bony feet.
This site is a wonderful source of information. Ana kindly shared with me this website, which you might want to check out!
http://womens-wide-calf-boots.com/
Also, the zappos website gives the shaft circumference for each of their boots. Start checking out these websites, and let us know how it goes!
I have skinny feet and narrow heels as well. Plus, I think my calves are around 14.5" to 15" at their widest point. One particular brand/style seemed to fit me well - it's the ECCO Bremen Women's tall boot - which has an adjustable buckle on the side, near the top of the calf. They work on my bare legs AND over skinny jeans, if you can imagine that.
I did some researching into why this might be - and it's that ECCO uses a last that is meant for narrow support around the heels and through the foot, but also leaves a bit of room at the toe area.
Here's what it says on their website:
"ECCO Shoes fit like no other. Conventional shoes fit across your feet at the toes, restricting the way your toes spread as you walk. ECCO's Freedom Fit is different: it offers a roomy toe box and fits more narrowly from heel to instep, suitable for most widths. Toes spread naturally to support your weight and foster a more comfortable walking experience."
In any case - I'm still looking for more boots, and will be investigating other brands as well. In the meantime, I was able to get the chocolate brown suede knee-high ECCO Tall Bremen Boot on sale through Amazon dot com for a great price. I wanted the black leather ones but they didn't have my size and/or weren't on for such a fabulous price. I just checked Amazon and the good deal I got a few months ago isn't on anymore. Around $160 for the brown suede, which is the same price as you can get at Dillards for black leather.
Dillards has the black leather ones at what I think is a very reasonable price for the quality:

I believe Dillards might still have a promotion going on where if you buy ECCO shoes or boots, they'll give you a $15 Dillards gift card. I'm not sure how long that promo was running, just that I noticed the ad in the paper awhile back. It might be on until the 8th? Not 100% sure on this.
Meanwhile, I was at places like DSW and Marshall's recently, trying on boots - and my heels and feet are so narrow that a lot of boots were flipping at the back of the heel, no matter which size I grabbed, and furthermore - they'd be too loose/bunchy at the ankles (I'm talking about non-slouch boots, where you don't want bunching at the ankles).
I think boots are just one of those things that are very hard to shop for. Some have narrow calves and can't find anything so easily either. Or, the calf is somewhat wider etc. I think every single person here has struggled to find the 'right boots'. It requires tons of trying on and making sure the fit is right. I lucked out that the brown ECCO Bremen boot fit so beautifully. Most of the other boots I've been trying on in stores have not been working out at all!
That said, I wouldn't necessarily go for a boot that says 15" calf circumference - if they're leather they might stretch out a wee bit. It depends if you want to wear them with skirts/dresses or over skinnies/straight leg jeans. This is why I kinda like the ECCO Bremen boot - it has that adjustable buckle thing at the top of the calf - very handy.
Good luck, and I'll be interested to see what you find - I'm having the same troubles.
I second the suggestion to look at circumference size on websites like Zappos, Endless, Piperlime, etc. Not only will it make finding boots easier, but it can also help you get used to seeing a boot in the size you need so when you are out shopping you will get more used to looking for the pairs you can realistically fit into. Train your eye, so to speak.
Also, I just got an email from DSW announcing they were now carrying wider widths for shoes and calves, so stop on by there!
Sarah, I sympathize as I've struggled to find boots in the past too (my calves are actually wider than yours). :) I believe Naturalizer has boots that would fit you. They seem to provide options in a variety of calf widths. Otherwise, the ladies have given you a bunch of great suggestions.
In case it turns out you need anything bigger than a 15 circumference, allow me to recommend this site: http://www.widewidths.com. The site contains every boot that's shown on the website Mac linked to, plus a great many more.
If you're willing to pay more, there's always duo boots: http://www.duoboots.com. It's a British retailer that provides boots in just about every calf width and lets you pick the exact measurements you need. I don't have a pair myself, but they've received universal raves on this site.
Welcome, Sarah! Nice to have you onboard.
Actually, 15.5 inch boot circumferences are not that hard to find. What’s more tricky is getting the shaft height right WITH the circumference.
You’ve received great suggestions from the lasses here. Are you looking at the calf measurement when you search online?
I'm currently in London on vacation and went to the Duo fitting room today. It's wide calf heaven! They measure your calfs, then you try on any style that you're interested in. Once you've decided, you order them and they ship them to you. I ended up getting this boot (http://www.duoboots.com/produc....._leather/), and it looked great on my curvy calfs, and made my legs look slim and streamlined. The great thing about going to the showroom is that you can actually see them in person and try them on. I would have never have chosen those boots based on the website picture, but now I'm in love! They were about 160 pounds, since they took off VAT but added shipping costs to the US. It was interesting to note that on the website they still charge VAT but also add shipping, making the boots 20 pounds more expensive.
On the whole, I'd highly recommend Duo. Their boots are beautiful and high quality and they are perfect for tricky calves. They're definitely an investment that I'll have for years to come!
You know that's not so huge for a calf! Don't let your esteem slide because of that. I became a big fan of Trippen boots a few years ago because of the way they accommodate larger sized calves. They're expensive, I know, but, wow, so well-made and SO comfortable.
See this one:

and also this one:

Oh, and this one, too:

Honestly, the Trippen shoes I've bought are some of the best in my closet. They hardly show wear at all (and I've had them for years).
Hi Sarah, I missed your thread the first time around, but wanted to extend my welcome as well!
I also have thick calves (I'm pretty close to your calf size, actually.) Tara, one of the forum members who used to be more active on the site, pointed me towards Rockport Ainly boots. I got a pair last year in "Brandy", and they are my absolute favorite boots. They were quite tight at first, but stretched to perfect comfort after a couple wears.
I think that Tara also has the Rockport Archmount, or else she mentioned that they fit similarly. (I haven't tried them but have a recollection that she recommended them.)
I tried these on in store (they also come in black) and they fit very well. By the way, right now at Naturalizer, you can get 15% off the sale price by entering promo code "HMKE9". Just wanted to mention that.
I got these B.P. boots about a month ago, and they were a bit snug at first, but also stretched out very well after wearing them around the house with the buckles loosened.
I hope that helps a little!
Those Naturalizer boots look great. I have wider calves as well. I've found that I have better luck with pull on boots then boots with zippers. It seems counterintuitive but that's been my experience.
