The one that got away

Late last winter, I ran across the most beautiful sweater dress on clearance at Banana Republic. It was charcoal gray and fit me so well. I bought it, but never took the tags off. It looked great with tights and boots, with a belt and a cardigan; but I never found the opportunity to wear it. It felt too dressy for an everyday dress and, though it was on clearance, it was still pretty expensive. I just couldn’t justify keeping it for an occasion dress. So I took it back. Of course, this was all pre-YLF. As I’ve learned, it would have been a great winter day dress-it wasn’t the least bit dressy. And, for a sweater dress, I probably wouldn’t have found anything much less expensive. How I wish I’d kept that dress!! I’m on the hunt for something similar to wear this winter, but that dress (and my misjudgment about it) is constantly on my mind as I look around.

That’s my fashion sob story. What’s yours? Is there a clothing item you’ve passed up but later regretted?

So many items I can’t even begin to count, especially when I travel (sad face).

But hopefully Karlie, you’ll find a replacement sweater dress this season!

Too bad Karlie. It is hard to find a great sweater dress, but now at least you know what to look for in details to fit your style and body.

Karie, sorry to hear about your sweater dress. I'm going to hope you find another one you love even more.

I had several of those sob stories when I did a closet clean out right before YLF. ARGGH- I got rid of things I just didn't know how to wear and after a few months on YLF, I realized I'd tossed out some really useful, good pieces. Still hurts!

This is why I love Banana Republic: they have the most wonderful search capabilities! If you still have the receipt and have the style number then you can call them and have them do a nationwide search to see if any store has it. If they find it you can do a charge-send for less than $10 and get it back. If they dont have it, you can find an outlet and have them do the same thing. The BR 1-800 number does not have access to the Outlet inventory but the Outlet stores have their own system.

This is why BR gets more of my money than almost any store out there. Very few stores seem to be able to match their ability to do this. Even though it was last season, don't give up hope! It is at least a phone call to see if it can be found.

Btw, even if you don't have the style number, the BR 1-800 number people are so helpful if you describe it and the season (winter '08) they will likely be able to find it for you. I"ve had many 'ones that got away and then got found successfully' stories with BR! They rock!

I found a buttery soft cordovan colored leather jacket a couple of years ago. It was marked way down to $200 from $500, or something like that. I waited too long to make my decision and my size was gone. What makes it worse is that my good friend/neighbor did buy one after I pointed it out to her in a size too small for me. I don't see her wear it too often, but I know it's there, in her closet, waiting to come out and torment me!

Ooo, I didn't know that about BR, agrace! Thanks for the tip. You should totally try to have BR find the sweater dress for you, karlie.

I have pined over the Hayden-Harnett Biba minidress in purple (here it is in black) for two years:

I kept waiting for the price to go down. Then it went down but my size was sold out. Now I'm stalking eBay.

Most recently the AT Pleather jacket! I had just started reading YLF and did not understand how fast popular items get sold out, before even having had a chance to go on sale :-(

Karlie, have you tried ebay? I have had good luck finding BR clothing from previous seasons/years.

Niva - refresh my memory on this pleather jacket. You know the other day I thought I saw some at my local AT. What color was it? This season right?

I can definitely relate. Most recently with this item: http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/30.....hoppingbag

I wanted the dress during the NAS but I was new to YLF and was not wearing dresses yet. When NAS ended the price was too high for me. Then, all of a sudden the dress went on sale again -- deeply discounted -- and my size sold out within hours. I'm still a bit upset about it. :(

Karlie i'm not religious but i do believe in fate so that dress just wasn't meant to be and there is a much better one out there somewhere x

I still pine for this dress--it was a lovely black jersey empire waist number with gray trim, Free People label, retailed for a pile of money, that I got at a garage sale for $5. It was a hair too big for me and at the time, I didn't have much use for a jersey day dress. I sold it at a consignment shop and made a profit on it but immediately regretted it.

The odd thing is that if I found it again, I might not like it anymore. It's time for new dresses!

agrace, that's interesting about BR. I'm going to give them a call and see if that dress still exists somewhere. Thanks for the information!

I love hearing everyone's stories! Thanks for sharing (and making me feel better)! :)

agrace, nope. It was the cream Bagatelle faux leather moto jacket from last spring/fall. You can see kari wearing it here. It must have been a limited edition item because I still cannot find it on ebay :-(

Niva, Have you ever called headquarters to see if they can hunt it down for you? Maybe an AT outlet? You are right I did not see that jacket but as cute as it is (and it is beyond cute!!) I would stalk it!

karlie - yes, you will be amazed what they can do. I have gotten some CRAZY deals that way! Sometimes it does not work but sometimes you find literally the LAST one in the country in a store and that is too cool. So it is worth a try! Keep us posted!

As many items as I have let get away, I don't remember any of them. I guess I just let it go, and know that there will be something else coming.
I *do* still think about a house that we didn't buy. My husband doesn't even remember the house, but I still have dreams about it!

agrace, I never would have thought of that. Thank you for the idea!
