Q&A about individual items, ensembles, and wardrobe

The jean search - Silver?

I went on a shopping excursion this morning trying to find a nice cardigan and some ballet flats. No luck with either of those, but I did find a promising jean store. I almost squealed when I found out that they carry some jeans with 35 and 36 inseams! I never would have thought to ask about this if it wasn't for Angie, so thank you! :)

So these were Silver jeans - are they good? They were $96 which is a lot more than I've spent on jeans before, but I want to get one pair that I love rather than two that are so-so. At the same time for that price I want to make sure they're good, you know?

Here's the pair I tried on - I wasn't sure about the fading and the lines by the hips, what do you think?

The ones I tried had a 32 waist and 35 inseam, and the waist was a little tight so I'm trying to decide if it will stretch or I should keep looking. They were also fitted through the thigh - is that ok?

They are cute, but very casual. I don't know if you could wear them as smart casual. I'd think you'd need a darker and more consistent wash to the jean. The whiskering around the pockets and the overall fading along the front give them this casual feel to me. I'm sorry, but I don't remember your body shape. I take it you're tall since you were happy with the 35" inseam. I ask because those whiskers near the hips/pockets could be troublesome to someone who is trying to distract from the hip area.

I can't tell whether it's the way they're being worn, but I really can't say I'm a fan of any of the jeans on the site. They look very junior's department to me. Whiskers and fading are also very casual and attract undue attention to the hips.

There are a lot of places that offer tall inseams. Lucky, Gap, Banana Republic all offer long/extra long lengths.

Joe's also offers a long inseam, but it's very pricey.

Ola,

I'm 5'10" and I've had good luck at the gap with their long sizes (34" inseam) in the store and if you need 36" you can order the tall version online. I haven't tried Lucky yet, but that is next on my list.

Yes, I'm 6' tall. I've only had 34" inseams up until now, but only one pair of them meets the PPL (I don't know why they're not all the same length on me, maybe the cut makes a difference). I tried another style today in a 36" inseam at the store and they were actually too long (I was stepping all over the bottom when walking) but perhaps they would be good heel jeans?

Thanks for the feedback re: smart casual. That is what I'm trying to aim for and I was wondering if these would be too casual. I like the term "whiskering", it's very descriptive. The second pair I tried (with the 36" inseam) were a much darker wash, so maybe they would be a better choice (I'll see if I can go in and take a photo). They did have a small amount of fading at the front though.

I'll look into some of the other brands you mentioned. I'm not sure if any are available up here in Canada, but if I can find them I'd love to try them on first. Just did a quick search and there are two Lucky jeans stores in Toronto so I may have to make a trip there. I'll try the Gap also, maybe I can stop in there tomorrow.

I have a pair of Silver jeans which I got at BP in Nordstrom. I like them a lot but I agree they are not as smart as can be. If you get a dark rinse style that is probably sufficient especially if you wear something extra smart on top. They are super comfortable however and also very low rise.

Luckies won’t be long enough unfortunately ladies. They don’t make longer than 33inches. Try David Khan. They come with a 35 inch inseam are worth every penny.

Are you sure Angie? The link I posted was to Lucky's collection of extra long inseams, and they all say they are 36".

Really, Maya? I have just been through this exercise with Lucky jeans for an almost 6ft client a few weeks ago? We stand corrected. Thank you.

Can you recommend a style of Lucky jeans that would work well in terms of wash? I'm having a hard time telling on the website, they all seem kind of medium to me.

Also, what do I look for in terms of fit? I was thinking a boot cut pair would be good, yes? Should they be fitted through the thigh, or is loose better?

I am not familiar with Lucky's cuts or washes myself, so I'm not really posed to answer that question, but as far as fit goes it depends entirely on you. I prefer a relaxed fit because I have large thighs, but I usually wear a slim fit anyway because most jeans that fit on my thigh are too big everywhere else. Also skinnies demand a snug fit at the thigh, otherwise they'd be tapered jeans. Just remember that relaxed doesn't mean baggy. Jeans that are baggy around the hips and thighs are always unflattering.

I don't think you can really go wrong with bootcuts. Straight legs are good too.

I agree w/Maya that bootcut are universally flattering. However, being 6' tall, you could wear a wide leg or trouser style jean. I think it will depend on what you want these jeans for. If they are go-to jeans, and you want to wear them smart casual as well as casual, then a wider leg, especially a trouser style, looks smarter to me.

Ola,

I just tried on Luckies yesterday. I had success with the Sweet and Low style (and they had a 34" inseam). I also liked the Lola, but it was a little low in the rise for me. I liked their straight leg version (Sundown I think) but it didn't fit me correctly at the waist. Hope that helps...

I don't have the wash numbers with me but I have them written down at home. I will try to update when I get my hands on that info.
