I am buying this cardigan in sapphire (which is a good color on me) and I found this top that I really like and think would look sharp with this cardigan and some other things I have (skirts, other sweaters, etc):

I can't decide which color though. The silver color would look really nice with the blue, but grey is not such a great color for me in general (gold is better). My question is, if I'm layering this top under this cardi, or wearing it with some colorful accessories, do you think it would be okay, or should I pick one of the other colors? Out of all of them, I think the pink would be best, but it just seems kind of cutesy with the polka dots, plus I ordered this top in the pink a few days ago:

Ana, I think that the grey would be fine as long as you wear it under that blue (or white cardi) or add some color elsewhere. I believe that Angie says that it all depend on what you wear a certain color with, so if worn in this way you can get away with it. I use that trick for yellow or some other color that id for me difficult to wear next to my face. The combo of saphire cardi/grey top is really pretty!

Btw, I'm swooning over that Elizabeth top, but have no need nor occasion for it

Even if grey is generally not your best colour, I think this might work because the top is a bit sheer and it has the polka dots too. (patterns do make a difference). And as Tanya has already suggested, add another colourful accent somewhere and it can look great.

I must add that although I love the grey top and the sapphire cardigan separately, I'm not completely sure about putting them together. I could be wrong but it looks a tad 'flat' to me. Maybe a brighter top (something green?) would be better, or even plain white (that would be more crisp than the grey).

And do post a picture of you in the Elizabeth top soon, it's beautiful!

Beautiful top, Ana. You have a great eye. Personally, I prefer the silver out of all three tops. You are right that the pink is a little cutesy. Something about the silver in that fabric really works. I wouldn't even consider that color grey. And if you find that the silver still does not work with a colorful cardigan, you can always try brushing on some bronzing powder and see if that helps. Sounds silly, but it might be just enough to make the color with your naturally milky complexion.

Also, it may help to let us see you in that color and be a more objective judge. I thought I looked horrible in that mossy grassy green color (the AT SS cardi that I just bought). But you all encouraged me to try more colors and I was shocked when mostly everyone said it was a great color for me.

I like the top Ana. I don't personally think the pink is too cutesy, but that's just my opinion. You have to decide what works for you in your wardrobe. I do like the silver. It's possible that the sapphire cardigan will provide the dominant color and you won't look as washed out as you might wearing just the silver. Do you have other things you can wear the silver with, or will you get more use out of another top?

I agree with Nicole to post a picture so we can see. Outside opinions offer fresh perspectives!

I thought the gold one was fab. At least it really jumped off the page for me.
However if you're looking for something to go with your saphire cadigan I don't think that would be the one. Maybe you need the gold top and a new cardigan too. How's that for stirring up trouble. I really do like the gold one best and if it is your color I'd love to see it on you.

I'm also a big fan of the gold one, but unlike san I actually think it would look good with the blue cardi. Beautiful top!
I'm also one of those people who don't wear grey well, and I'd stay away from it. It might become an wardrobe orphan
I like the pink one and don't think it's too cutesy, but you gotta go with your gut instinct here!

Okay, I went to J. Crew and they had the top there! I tried it on and at first I was a little non-plussed, only because the color isn't super fab on me, and also it's a bit "tenty." The neckline is super cute though--it has this little tie that looks like a scarf. Very 60s. So, I tried it on there with a crew neck cardigan. I will reserve my opinion so as not to bias you guys. I bought it so I could take pictures with it with my black short sleeved cardi. The blue one I ordered is exactly the same cardigan, only in this sapphire color:

I tried the pink one on and the gold one, because I like to try everything (sometimes I'm surprised something works), and the pink color was better on me. It wasn't super cutesy, but definitely would have been too bright to wear with any of my cardis except the black one (and I already have a lot of things I can wear with that one). It was actually brighter pink in person. The gold isn't actually gold either, it's like a dark mustard color and has a bit of a green tinge. Unfortunately it made me look very sallow, so I passed. I think on the right skin tone though it would look nice with the blue as well (or possibly the right shade of green or pink).

As a bonus, I got the black bead necklace I've been eyeing for a while. Online it's $65.00, but at the store it was on sale for $39.99 and accessories were 25% off, so I only had to pay about $30.00!

Ana, I LOVE the way it looks with the cardi, totally adorable! I also like it with the belt as well. I think you can get away with the color, especially with the proper make-up.
I have found that what works for me in case a top washes me out a bit but I love it and want to wear it, is to layer a sheer layer of pink blush (peach for you probably) over light layer of bronzer: the bronzer goes on the cheekbones, temples, nose bridge, the blush on the apple of the cheeks. Lipgloss in color complimetray to the one of the blush completes the whole thing.

Very cute top. I don't think it washes you out, but it may be hard to tell from the pictures and monitor colors, etc. I love it with the belt and it goes great with the cardigan. You put together very interesting outfits (and unfortunately make me want to go out and try it too :P)

I like it all three ways actually. I know you are trying to steer away from tenty blouses--but when it's a hot Texas summer day, a little breathing room might feel great. I liked it with the belt--I'd be curious to see it with a thinner belt too. And I absolutely loved it with the cardi. I dont think the color was bad on you at all either. I hope you're going to keep it. There is something about polka dots that are just so fun and playful!

I decided to keep it. I actually really like it and had decided that I would keep it unless you guys pointed out something totally hideous that I hadn't noticed before. Thanks for the all the input and advice. I'll post pictures when I finally get my blue cardi.

Ana, I like all three ways too, especially the last one with the cardi. I'm sure your blue cardi will make it even better.

For the first one, it might look better with your JCrew clamdiggers. I remember that your orange shell looked much better with the clamdiggers than jeans.

I've been eying the sapphire cardi myself but couldn't think what color to wear it with except white/cream. The blue is very rich, and silver gray seems a lot gentler but I haven't seen either in person. I would be curious to see how it works.

I'm thinking the silver will act as a light neutral like white would. It won't look as "crisp" but I think it might be interesting and less "predictable" than white would be (although I am planning on wearing a white tank underneath sometimes). I'm also going to try out some yellow tops and see if I can find one that will work with the blue cardi as well.

Yay Ana! This is a different look for you and I like it! You have incorporated a pattern AND a retro look. Fab! All combos get my thumbs up.

I really enjoy seeing people branch out. As much as I like “uniforms”, pushing the fashion envelope is fun and exciting. Keeps things fresh. I personally like the mustard-y gold colour. Did you try it? A strong shoulder line is a must for this style. Now imagine how super this top will look with your clamdiggers.

I did try the mustard color, but it really made me look sallow. It's got a green tinge to it in person that is just not right for my skin tone. If it had been more of a true dark gold, I totally would have gone for it! I've found that green (or colors that have a green base) are hard for me to pull off.

Marianne that's great! I think lime would be really nice with the blue, I love that combo and had forgotten about it until you mentioned it. Hmm...now to look for some lime accessories!

Great! I just ordered the cardi and will try it with lime too. Unfortunately it's not shipping till 6/16. I didn't notice before, but I realize now that I never saw you in green.
