Summer hats (and short hair) ETA picture

I've never worn much headwear, but I think I might need some kind of summer hat for our vacation. It's probably going to be really hot and we are likely to be outside the whole day more often than not. I'm not quite sure what to look for. Is there such a thing as a stylish, packable sun hat that works with a short pixie cut and glasses? Or should I just don't care and buy one of these squashable cotton bucket hats? What kind of headwear do you wear in summer?

Any kind of suggestion and pictures welcome.

I was just wondering what I would do, Astrid.

With my longer pixie I did wear hats and found it not a problem. The bangs stuck out and showed.

It is easy to look hairless with a really short pixie and a hat.

If you wear a brimmed hat you can push it back a bit and this can look cute. (Fedora, bowler, boater...) Here's a comment on that: https://gaminegirl.com/owners-manual/

But pushing it back means the sun still falls on your face -- not ideal!

I would definitely buy a squashable bucket hat for practicality on the vacation. Or carry a parasol?

Thanks Suz! Yes, it's definitely easy to look hairless... That's why I only wear my wool beanies for warmth if really necessary in winter, not for looks. Wearing one of the styles you mentioned pushed back might work, I think I will have to try some on in a department store to see if there's a shape that works best. The link talks about headwraps too, but wouldn't you hide the hair with those too? I definitely can't imagine carrying a parasol around with me though. But your right, I think I will definitely get one of those bucket hats so I have something to fall back on if necessary.

I've seen photos but never tried a brimmed hat over a head wrap or kerchief worn tied over your hair. There needs to be a return of the sun bonnet.

Haha, Rachylou - I loved my Bugs Bunny baseball cap in primary school. I tried to find a picture, but I only have one with the classic navy bucket hat...

Hats with glasses are tricky. I'm short, and a very wide sun hat makes me look like a mushroom. Another consideration is wind, because if your hat goes sailing away, well, you have no hat. There are only a few sun hats for women with any ability to tie a hat on your head and not look like you are going to a fancy garden party (which is not my vacation look, but maybe your life is fancier than mine!). On vacation last year, I found a hat with metal grommets through which a narrow scarf was threaded. I played with it and found that I could re-thread it so that the scarf ends would tie under my chin, if necessary, and I bought it. I took off the not-very-nice scarf and substituted one I had, and it is ready for summer outings.

Thanks Kiki! I didn't even think about wind... But I don't think I want something wide brimmed in any case. And not too fancy, my vacation style is definitely relaxed and casual, same as my everyday style really.

Diana thanks, great tip! I'm going to look the brand up. Yours looks great, I think a packable straw hat would be a great option. And it's neither too fancy nor too casual.

I have a Tilley. It has a chin strap that I can tuck up inside when I don't need it. It is not for a garden party, obviously. My husband left his on a bus in Turkey. Luckily he got it back.

Thanks Diana, I found it. And it comes in so many colors! Seems like the big department stores at Tauentzienstraße stock Seeberger, I think I'll go have a look Friday after work.

I can't argue with that. However my husband has had his about 10 years, so cost per wear is low and going lower.

Whatever you end up getting, get a light color so it reflects the sun and keeps your head cooler.

I agree, I also usually prefer to spend more money at once if it means quality that holds up, but right now there are other things I need more and the budget is limited.

I think I found the one Diana has on Amazon for 20€, in pink. I'm thinking about placing an order...

I can do the type of hat Angie posts, a bigger brimmed St. Tropez style straw hat and a fedora. And i have the shortest hair ever . Not sure I could be talked into wearing my glasses with all of this going on though - or earrings. I'd do lipstick and mascara and leave it at that.....

Thanks Angie - I think if the pink hat looks halfway decent I'm fine. It can only be an improvement over a cotton bucket hat.

Ha Lisap, I couldn't leave out the glasses either. I'm going to wear either my normal glasses or my prescription sunglasses. And I don't wear big earrings anyway, so I guess that won't be a problem.

Wow packable straw, fancy stuff! I have a very un-packable straw cowboy hat which I wear a fair amount, but love the idea of getting a version that's packable. Also have a very large floppy sun hat with black and white stripes which gets a lot less wear. I find hats SO VERY TOUGH with curls -- hats (except berets) just squish them right out and the curls never seem to recover no matter how much I shake or scrunch more water back in.

Aida, that big hat looks awesome - but I can see why you rarely wear it. That's a lot of hat! My hair always got squished down too with wool beanies, it never quite looked the same. I'm curious how the hat will work out. But of course with the short hair it probably won't matter as much.

Suz, I also looked at tons of hats.... It was definitely fun. Let me know if you want my help getting one of these, as I said, Amazon has them for little money. I'm not sure how small it will fold down until mine gets here, but if it fits into a big envelope then sending it as an international tracked letter is quite inexpensive and fast.

I have the hat with short hair and glasses thing mastered. I have learned that For me the brim can be no more than 3 inches. 4 inches is pushing things and would be for practical sun blocking purposes at poolside, not for out and about. Any more than that and it gets too large. Visors are a great choice because they allow your hair to show. They make some nice straw visors, not all of them are sporty looking, and I have a nice collection. Some can look good with a dress. and everyday clothes.

Watch the shape of the hat. I find I can wear fedora's, boaters, western looking hats, and even floppy brims as long as the brim doesn't drop too much in front. You may want to experiment with some styles to see what works for you, but when the brim droops in front it makes me look bald, if it is more uplifted, you can usually see some of my hair.

Below is a hat that I purchased this year. The brim is on the larger end but it rolls upwards to shorten and ends up looking nice. I tie a scarf around the top which also makes the proportions look better on me, otherwise it looks very large for my frame.

I very floppy straw hats with very wide brims since I am very pale and try to protect my face from the sun as much as possible. I have the hat attached below in both stripe and plain solid straw color. Not sure if these would work with short hair, but you can always try.

A bit of a tangent but a good looking, wide brimmed packable hat is my HEWI! I have an Eric Javits hat similar to Staysfit's, but it is too floppy for me. I like a brim that is more stiff, like the hat below, which I wear every day. If I could stuff it in a bag it would be perfect.

Thanks Staysfit! I definitely want a hat and not a visor, I want my head covered. But good point about avoiding too flappy (wide) brims, that sounds like a recipe for desaster. I may have to try the trick with the scarf.
