I hope things are sounded less overwhelming now that you can see a way through it. This type of downsizing is not too far off for me, either and I'm listening!
I think your "too fussy to bother with" is such a great category. I've been trying to use that with all new purchases. It isn't just about comfort--it's more about things that work inherently well without some supporting cast, and also that hold up during the day (or time ) of wear without letting you down; the deciding points may be very individual, as to what annoys one, or feels bothersome.
