Finding the items you need at the right price

Straight-leg jeans SUCCESS -- and on sale!

I have been on the hunt for a non-premium denim pair of straight-leg jeans, with no success. Gap's version had terrible highlighting fading on the dupa, AT only had bootcuts that I could find, BR's pockets were excessively wide across the dupa...all were sadly returned.

On Friday I stopped at Kohl's to return a top and stopped to check out their selection; someone had recommended the Dana Buchmans bootcuts so I wondered if there was a straight-leg version somewhere. I miraculously found a pair of Levi's straight-leg in dark wash -- I say miraculously because it was mostly hidden elastic waistbands, relaxed fit, light wash, or bootcuts available. This was just about the only one in all the piles -- and for $32! I grabbed 'em and ran.

The next day I went to the mall, on a mission to stop at every store that carried jeans and just try them on (and to return the Gap ones LOL). Martin + Osa was the first stop on my trip; it's not a store I frequent because I think the prices are too high, but I know Sarah (who is close to being my body/style twin these days) has been having a lot of luck there so I was determined to give them a try. They have a new set of denim styles now, and the slim cut is their only straight-leg version. But at the back of the store they had their old version of straights on sale, and VOILA!! It was the jeans I have been looking for!

I scooped up two pairs of dark wash, one long and one regular --- each for $35! They were marked down to $49, and there is an additional 30% off sale prices going on. (I also got the whites but have reconsidering now that I am home; they just don't fit as well as the darks). So now I have 3 pairs of great-fitting straight-leg jeans. I am all set for fall and winter, whoohoo!

Moral of the story: try on everything, even at the stores where you don't expect to find success.

Whoo-hooo, what an amazing success! I am so happy for you Kristen. May we see them on you pretty please?

Yay! I'm glad you found some straight cuts that will work for you. I still need more as well.

I'm going to head on back out there too. I'm not ready for 'premium' jeans just yet, as I still have a number of pounds to lose. I would really like to find a few pairs of decent 'skinnies' or straight legs in the meantime. I got one pair at JC Penney, but they can really only be worn with boots (not long enough for flats). Meanwhile, it's still 80+ degrees out there.

You're so right though - it's just a matter of schlepping around, going into all kinds of places. Sort of like Angie's "leave no retail stone unturned" idea.

Now I want to go to the mall!

eh eh.. you are so funny!
That's what life has tought me too.. try everything.. we never know if it works for your body until you try!

Hee, Tanya, you beat me to it! I had to upload them first.

Here are the 3 pairs I bought, in front and dupa views. :) I upped the shadow filter on the photos so you could see the fit better, but that of course alters the actual color. Never fear, they are all dark wash with no fading. They're a little snug, which is good for me because I am super-bloated this weekend and still have a couple of pounds to go. So they can be washed, I can still lose weight, and they will still fit.

The sweaters and tops are all also new, too, from BR and M+O. I fear M+O is about to become a favorite haunt; I really liked a lot of their tops and sweaters too. Dang...

They all look yummy and you look tiny teeny. What size are the jeans?

Posted 2 months ago

The M+Os are 31s (aka 12s) and the Levi's are 10s. They had a lot of sizes still available at M+O; I think they just switched out to the new style.

Wow Kristen, you look amazing! What great scores and you do look so tiny! Love all the tops too. Btw, I like M&O a lot as well.

You did really well - the jeans look great on you!

Perfect timing Kristen - thank you. I am about to head out to the mall and will be sure to check out M&O which I usually don't like. And I'll stop visit the Levi's collection at JC Penney's. I also heard that Land's End in Sears has great skinnies in right now. I'll report back if they work.

You look fantastic, Kristen! My word! Thanks for sharing the info. These definitely look like skinnies on you.

What are the rise measurements like?

SCORE...Nothing like a great fitting pair of jeans. It is really all about the FIT, not about the price. :)

Kristen - thanks to you, I now own a pair of M&O jeans - great tip!

Sihaya, so glad you were able to score some jeans as well! I texted my Shopping Friend from the dressing room on Saturday, and she was able to pick up a couple of pairs too.

Angie, a pseudo-skinny is the look I was going for; my hips are so much wider than my legs that a true skinny exacerbates the difference even more. I am more comfortable with the look of a straight-leg instead.

All the jeans are a mid-rise, although the M+Os are a teeny bit lower than the Levis.

Yay, M + O! Was the manager there? He is a super nice guy who always tries to sneak me a discount when I ask :)

We did get taken care of by a guy but I don't think he was the manager. I will be going back to that store again; the fit on so many items was great, and I'd like to be able to wander a bit more next time. I'll have to try to get some discounts next time! :) A lot of ex-F&T people either work or shop there, the guy was telling me. I know peeps! :)

You literally look smaller each time I see you Kristen. Do you have a goal weight in mind or are you just going to see how far you are able to go?

Anyway the jeans look beautiful on you. Straight legs are my favorite because are so versatile. You can wear them with heels and flats, tunics and regular length tops, voluminous tops and form fitting tops. They are fabulous. I know you're going to get lots of use out of these.

Awww, thanks, Maya! Actually I have been wandering up the scale a bit, so I am trying to go back down a bit. I do have a specific weight goal in mind which will put at the top of my recommended range for my age and height and will give me a healthy BMI. Right now, I am still in the overweight range! Sheesh. But it's only ten pounds away so I am getting there slowly.

The versatility of straight-legs is what appeals to me. Also my husband really doesn't like bootcuts; he thinks they make me look like a mermaid because my hips go out, it narrows at my knee, and then it poofs out again. He's not wrong... :)

Those look fabulous on you (the MOs). I tried to order some but they didn't have my size online. My store seems to be out, too. Boo hiss. I'll try some of the other styles to see if they work for me.

Kristen, I meant to say that straight legs are your skinnies. Same effect! Love these on you. Like hubbies perspective too. I have a husband who is all over skinnies and straight legs too. But today, I’m in my bootcuts…….

Angie, yes, I remember reading a comment (or was it in a blog entry?) of yours explaining that straight-legs were similar enough to skinnies that it would work for some wearers. I did have that in mind as I found these, because a true skinny was just not working. I am so pleased that these can fill both wardrobe holes!

Woohoo! Great finds Kristen, they all look great on you esp the M&Os. I'm still looking for something that fits even half as decently.

Posted 2 months ago

Both brands look terrific on you! I have a pair of straight leg dark Levi's and I love them. I'm looking to duplicate them ... wish I had a Kohl's near me!

Is there a number on the Levis? Or did they just call them Lvei Straight legs? They have been changing style name system for women a lot - like every season.
I find that Levis are my best fitting jeans a s well and need a straight leg. Will be at Kohls this week with your inspiration.

Bought some Dana Buchman tops this season - nice for the price!

Chris, they were just called Levi Straight-Leg, which was good because they were buried in a pile of bootcuts of varying rises. If it had been numbers to try to keep track of I would never have picked the right ones! LOL.

Good luck, and be persistent looking for them. They are in there somewhere! :)

I think my Levi's are 505s.
