Speaking of style icons

As you know, my chosen style icon is Helen Mirren. I have a hair appointment tomorrow morning for a cut and color, and am wondering what style I should ask for. My hair isn't as thick as hers, I don't think, and it's not gray. It seems to be taking a long time to grow out, too, but I'm determined not to get it cut short again due to problems with cowlicks. Suggestions?

If you want to let you hair grow, probably won't be able to have a "style" as it grows. It's more of a transition phase. It's good to have a style in mind that you want to aim for though.

I'm thinking about this one, even though it would have to be shortened in the back. My hair is only a little longer than this in front, so not much of a change there. The question would be if I could go 6 weeks between cuts or not.

Thanks, Firecracker! Yes, that's a possibility - might work better with my hair type, actually. The problem I have is that my hair wants to flip up in the back, on one side, so a traditional bob doesn't work. I know because I've tried.

I can see why Helen is your icon. She is gorgeous, has great style and can rock a short haircut like no-one else. I also notice that she rocks bangs as well as the swept/off-the-forehead styles. So much to choose from.

Thanks, everyone. Here's the style I came home with. I had it cut a little shorter to go 6 weeks between cuts and root color touch ups.

Are you interested in shorter and fuller bangs? HM's bangs look more prominent than yours do, at least in these photos. They are fringe-y, not straight-cut. Could be a fun look for you. (thinking of El Cee's #1 & #2 photos...NOT #5 as it is too short IMHO)

I can't do bangs due to a cowlick, so have to work around it. The cowlick is right on the spot where my part is. I also have a cowlick on top of my head that reveals itself when my hair is cut in short layers. The longer length and weight of my hair tames it. I also have a cowlick in the back that makes my hair flip out, so I keep it rather short back there. I tried to grow it out, but it started flipping out, and I realized that it either has to be shorter or a lot longer in back. My hair starts looking stringy when it gets shoulder length or longer, so I went shorter.

Having said all that, my hair will fall into bangs when I style it myself. My stylist was styling it back, out of my face. My hair has a natural tendency to fall forward, if that makes sense.

Aha, I know what you mean about cowlicks as I have 2 or 3 powerful ones that really try to take over my life! And yet, I forge on...

My hair is super-flat on the top of my head but sticks out around my ears (like spaniel-ears on a dog) if I let it get too long and bushy. Sigh. Plus it always wants to fall in a certain way that is not flattering so I do use a curling iron on my bangs to get them going downward toward my eyebrows. Otherwise they tend to fly off in several non-flattering directions!

If I cut my hair real short and wear it spiky, going every which way, I can take advantage of my cowlicks because they will provide the 'lift' that I need for this look. I wore my hair very short, styled this way for a few years but my husband got tired of it so I have been wearing it longer for about a year.

Do you ever wear your hair behind your ears, maybe just one side? I think it would look very cute but I know some people do not like to wear it this way.
