Speaking of crises and leather skinnies...

My high school reunion is next week. I assumed there would be a cocktail-ish dress code and was going to wear my new black dress (whcih was successful at my recent purse auction event). Then I made the mistake of posting a question about it on Facebook, and everyone is wanting a "jeans and dressy top" kind of night. Not a formula in my repetoire!

There is no reason whatsoever I have to go with the prevailing look - after all, what's the point of a reunion if not to assert that you're no longer subject to peer pressure? - but if there's mad drinking and dancing rather than genteel conversation and standing around chatting, I want to be properly attired!

So, given the leather skinnies discussion, should I wear them, and what the heck can I wear as a top that is fun rand dressy ather than worklike or casual?

I vote wear them! I imagine there will be someone there who "wishes" they could rock them...i could consider maybe a sheer-ish top layered over a tank? little more dressy, little edgy, Cool Jewelry of course!

Elly, I could but that might be too much black and too much weight visually. There is a surprising dearth of dressy tops that are not really femme-y. And I need it to be longer since the leather skinnies are close to leggings.

I could do an Equipment button-down but that doesn't seem like a party look.

Absolutely wear them! They have that, "OMG, can you believe Una can still look so damn good in leather pants?" quality. Personally, I'd consider that a total coup for a reunion! What about the skull sweater with them?

So you know there is an All Saints on Newbury Street, right?

Also you are not really a Nanette Lepore girl but there is one of those on Newbury too and they have a lot of the sort of top your associates are considering in the fall sale.

I say leather skinnies, colorful silk or thin knit top, some sort of removable long cardi and coat over.

Absolutely wear them! What about your emerald snake print blouse to go with them - it is long enough and dressy enough. Or maybe your forest print tunic (if I remember correctly - I think it is pretty cool too)
And you signature boots of course!

Could you call the All Saints in Boston and see if they have that top and could hold it for you? I would most definitely wear the leather pants.

Wear them. At my reunion the most striking outfit was skinny jeans with a beautiful green silk shirt worn out and untucked so that it moved with the body. It was a simple Equipment type shirt.

I was going to suggest an Equipment shirt. I wore faux leather leggings and an off-white Equipment blouse to a party just last week, with Rachel Comey Mars booties. Everyone else was in dresses, but I felt like myself and got several compliments.

i want to second ariadne's suggestion of an equipment silk shirt with the leather leggings….IMO it strikes the right tone. pair with a shoe with a slender heel, even if its a kitten heel, (and even if you have to wear boots and change into the shoes at the event).

I think you will look great in any number of your very "Una" choices. Will you be dancing too? If so, I guess I'd think about how warm I might get. I think you could wear your F21 poncho sweater (looked back at your posts and I really love that hemline) dressed up with jewelry to make it festive, or the green snake print blouse - both with those fab leather pants.

You could also wear you forest print dress with leggings (who cares what the others end up wearing, right?). I'd likely choose two options to take with me so I could make up my mind last minute if I wanted.

Thanks for all the suggestions! The snake Equipment is a good one and I will try it. I think a sweater may be too heavy. I returned the skull sweater but now I wish I hadn't even though I wouldn't wear it for this event! Also have another option I will show y'all.

There won't be time to shop, sadly, not to mention my terror of Black Friday traffic and crowds. And I grew up in Boston! Not used to it anymore...

I don't know why people don't want to dress up! Isn't that the point of events?!

I did not keep the short sleeve forest print dress, but I do have the Carven dress. Not sure I feel confident enough to rock it without a topper right now.

Do a mass tryon of your lighter/ brighter knit tops and silk shirts. Either could work & one or more may speak to you. Roll sleeves of shirt, fancy cuff and cool Una shoes, or fluid knit top. Okay to shop in Boston, but you'd want that to be possible wild card & have an acceptable outfit already, I think.

What Dana said. The booties are key. The top should drape nicely to offset the sleek pants -- which, by the way, I think you are well-qualified to wear.
