Sneakers and a Dress: attempt 1 (ETA: sneaks photo)

I'm calling this attempt 1 because the dress doesn't really work, and these pics make me realize that.

Still, it's what I'm wearing today, and I want to figure out a dress or two that actually work for me this summer. (I'm considering altering this one actually, I think if I bring in the dress a little at the hem, it might be a more cocoon shape...)

Shown with sneakers, then with birkenstocks, since I'll probably spend half the day or more in the birks - even though these new-to-me vans are really comfy.

The pics are unflattering despite my taking the time to put on a dash of lipstick and mascara for the outside shot. I added some nipple shields after taking these, but don't have the time to re-take pictures.

Should I just ditch the dress?

I love picture 2 with the white jacket and the sneaks...You look cool and in command and ready for what your day brings...Great look!....

Oh you look gorgeous - especially pic3! Are you growing your hair?

Now - on to the critique. To my eye the jacket doesn't work - just too boxy looking.
The dress needs something to break up all that black - the neckline adds interest, but not enough. Maybe one of those waterfall type sweaters? I'm also thinking the length needs to be a bit longer for your gorgeous legs? What's your sweet spot for skirt/dress length? For me it is just below the knee.

I know you generally appreciate an honest answer. I would ditch the dress. It's not awful, but nor is it doing much for you. In the sun it looks a bit faded too.

Thank you for the careful critique Sue - I knew that posting this would result in getting some help.

I definitely prefer skirts just below the knee, although I'm also okay with them 3-4 inches above (shorter than this) It seems like Angie had said something about wearing skirts above the knee with flats to lengthen the leg line? (at least, in my mind).

And I don't think I'm comfortable in all black - I thought this might show enough skin to not feel like so much black, but you're right that it would be better with something to break it up.

I'll hop out this afternoon and try a couple of sweaters with it. My waterfall cardi is also black, but I have a sporty blue cardi that might be interesting....

What do you think about the shape and fit of the dress? I'm considering using this one as a pattern (I guess because I like the neckline and the diagonal seams), and I could make a longer version in a color.... But I wonder if it's too sack-like and/or unflattering to bother...

Sorry - my thinking "out loud" is resulting in a novel of mishmash thoughts.

And cross-posted with Jules and abc - thank you for your honesty! I don't think the dress is actually faded (the light was awfully bright though), but I agree, I don't think it's very flattering. Probably should move on toward other summer dresses, not try to make a better-color copy of this one.
