Hi Robin, I know there are plenty of shoes currently that are kind of like closed-toe sandals. They are usually closed from the tip of the toe, down to where your toes adjoin your foot.

From there, the shoe is an open sandal, with some sort of ankle strap.
There are a lot of shoes in this type of style currently. They're a dressy sort of flats.

I'm sure you can also find them in a more padded version for comfortable walking.

I wear flat oxfords with skirts a lot. For a more casual look, slip on sneakers also work. With both, I can wear secret socks that don't show, which ups the comfort factor.

I guess maybe we are past the wearing sneakers with dresses and skirts. There are a lot of cute flat sandals out there that are great with cute summery dresses and skirts. It al depends on you, and your feet how much support you need for walking. I do not require support and walk a lot in any comfy sandal as long as they have enough padding on the bottoms. Lots of dressier flat sandals have little or no cushioning for the soles of feet. But this year I am finding a lot more do.

I have #1 and similar ones like #2 in a taupe color. No. one is super comfy and I have walked al lot and on my feet for about 4 hours in them. My ones like 2 are very cushy, but< but I think would only work for a very casual dress or skirt. 3 is probably best with shorts, jeans, etc. but I would wear them with casual dresses or skirts, especially if lighter colors or a color to match the dress. 4 are the kind to wear with dresses, butr for me not a lot of walking as they are probably to hard of feet bottoms.

You might try athletic flats. They can have the comfort of sneakers with the feminine look of ballet flats. They are my most worn footwear. Most have some sort of strap across the top of the foot which helps hold them on if running or walking fast. I can't do finds on my iPad but if you Google athletic flats, you should find a selection. Agree with Joy. I do love slip on sneakers as well. I have a pair of athletic shoes that are shaped like ballet flats and have a pretty floral print but give me the comfort of a pair of sneakers.

Usually I'm happy with open toe flat sandals that have a cushioned insole. Dr Scholl does fantastic ones

I ruined my feet in the 80s and now I find that closed in shoes always rub.

For something super comfortable but nice looking, I go for croc wedges. I can pretty much walk all day in them without a problem and they look great with skirts and dresses.

diana: Can you describe Oxfords to me? I'm blind (like Michelle) and don't think I've ever been in touching distance of Oxfords.

Secret socks. Yes, that'd definitely help. I'm guessing these are socks that don't come up higher than the top of the shoe?

I was going to suggest oxfords as well. They have a high vamp and lace up over a tongue, like men's shoes. In recent years it's a niche trend to wear oxfords with a dress or skirt. (And some people, like our Astrid, rock the look on the regular.) Some feminine-looking styles incorporate light colored leather or metallic, or perforated for summer.

Loafers (another menswear inspired shoe) also work with skirts, but may need a little more care to look intentional (librarian look?)

Have you considered flat ghillies? Or d'orsay flats with ankle straps (similar to jewel's suggestion)? Fisherman's sandals could work, too, though less dressy than the others. Espadrille, ditto. There's a great selection of all of the above available this summer. I just grabbed a random bunch from the Topshop USA site, below. (Btw, off the point, I shouldn't look at the topshop shoes at all -- I always finds lots I want to buy, and the prices are reasonable enough that I am inordinately tempted. However, I haven't found most of those I have acquired all that comfortable.)
