Shopping - Should I keep these?

I went shopping today and bought a few simple frocks. I usually wear cotton, simple, classic outfits. I'm not accessorizing them with anything because I'm mostly concerned with their fit, not whole style, and it's 12am.

PS - they are also intended to go to Europe with me in September-August. I'm not sure about weather in Southern France and Italy - do you think I may be cold? I live in Houston, so cold means anything below 78.

Kristina, it looks like both of these fit you really well! I was in Northern Italy last August and it was HOT. I'll be even warmer in the South, so I'd imagine you'll be fine. Just take some leggings and light cardigans, and maybe some jeans for the cooler days, and you'll be fine.

I will say that I like the dress more than the skirt on you. I don't generally like elasticated waists, and even thought I LOVE that style of skirt (big and gathered), it also looks a touch short to me.

I should explain- I don't think it's too short FOR YOU, because obviously you have killer legs (wanna trade?:) and it's just above the knee, which is hardly inappropriate. It's just that I like that style of skirt (or dress) when the skirt has room to "finish" its shape, if that makes sense. When they're shorter than knee-length I find it looks a little young.

Lol, I probably seem oddly fixated. As an ex designer I always notice these things, and I guess I just have weird pet peeves! They both look great on you, though.

The dress looks good i like the one shoulder i'm thinking it's more an evening dress as opposed to a day dress?
The skirt looks ok but i'm sure Angie usually advises against elasticated waists on skirts and trousers x

I love the dress Kristina, the asymmetrical shoulder line really seals the deal for me, and I think you could wear it during the daytime as well on holiday.
The skirt is lovely too, but I'm with the other lasses on this one.

About being cold: it can still be plenty hot in France/Italy during these months, but throw in a cardigan or a denim jacket for when it's cooler and you're good to go.

Yes, I agree with the assessment on the dress -- on vacation, you could wear it as a day dress. And the skirt -- I can see why you like it, but I do see Ele's point as well. I don't know how old you are, but if you have any qualms about it looking too young, Ele's point is something to consider.

If you are concerned about the elasticated waist on the skirt, I would use a waist belt wide enough to cover the elastic. If the belt is leather it may add the grown up touch you were looking for.

I also believe the dress could work for both day and evening with the right accesories. If you are in the Riviera you can afford to go glam in the daytime.

I was also going to suggest a wide belt for the skirt. Try and see if you like it that way. I think it looks fine otherwise.

Oh, I love the dress and the skirt, though Ele does make a good and very observant point. I'm constantly focusing on length these days because some lengths are much more flattering for me than others.

I love the skirt. That is from Old Navy right? I saw them there and was wondering about them-- I don't think it matters with that style of skirt the elastic waist band, especially since it is wide elastic like that, it isn't a skinny strip...and I think with skirts that fit on your true waist like that wide elastic creates a better fit than if it were a botton and zipper. IMO.

Now I'm a tad confused. I like the shortness of the skirt, but I always wear fairly short skirts. I'm 28, so I may be aging out of short skirts, but I don't have kids yet and I work out of the house, so there is no "dress code" to adhere to. So - in all honestly, as I prefer bluntness - would you say the skirt with the combined length, poofyness, and waist, is just too young and I should return it? I'm not so fully committed to it as to have my feelings hurt.

I'm glad everyone approved of the dress. It's a really light cotton jersey, which I love because I can easily dress it up or down, day or night.

And yeah, the clothes are all from Old Navy. I went there for a few basic Ts (hard to find any that fit my tiny chest), and saw the dress and skirt. Sometimes I chance upon great buys there!

I have been having luck at Old Navy lately--- I personally like the skirt, I think it is a cool look with flats. It would look silly with heels but with flats it is nice. And it is not twee or too young.

I have to be the voice of objection here. I think the skirt is adorable, and I don't see what the problem is with an elastic waist on a skirt. On pants it's fugly because it causes a lot of awkward fit issues and a bloated look, but on a skirt which is already poofy, I don't see why it matters. If it's really bothersome, just don't tuck it and no one will know (of course you'll have to keep the shirt short enough for a skirt). The idea of a waist belt is also smart.

28 is young and you have a killer bod. My only concern might be height. I don't personally wear these kinds of skirts because I'm short and I get mistaken for a teenager enough as it is (I am 25, 5'2). I think there are very few things in the world that are "too young" (as in inappropriate) on a 28 year old...but there might be things that make you look younger than you are if that makes sense.

I don't see a problem re: that adorable skirt . The length is fine...goodness your young ...enjoy, I"m with Maya on that, few things offensive at your age!! and the elastic waist is more of a gathered elastic and quite wide soooooo, I say wear and look fab!

The dress is also equally nice on you!!:)

I dig both looks. The dress -- oo la la! Love the single-shoulder look. Definitely can be dressed up or down. I also don't have a problem with the skirt. You're young enough and have the legs for them -- go for it!

Thanks for the insights. You all have great input. I hope that by following the boards, I can increase my style quotient. I'm going to wear the dress tonight to my friends' housewarming party with bright red pumps.
