Q&A about individual items, ensembles, and wardrobe

Selecting which specs to wear

Since eyeglasses selection has been a pretty common topic around here RE: finding the style, shape and color that is most flattering, I wanted to find out how the rest of you are shaping your outfits around your specs or, for those of you who have multiple pairs, how you decide which pair you want to wear.

My prescription hasn't changed too much in the past four years, and I liked to get a new pair whenever my insurance would allow me to, so I currently have four pairs with prescriptions that are still pretty "useable" (I can see clearly enough to safely drive at night.) I also have contacts that I currently wear about 1/3 to 1/2 of the time. This is the collection & how I tend to wear them, but I am open to other ideas too.

1. Burgundy and turquoise (the most recent pair)
I haven't had them for very long, but because the turquoise is a secondary/accent color, I find myself wearing blue tops or necklaces to accentuate the shade. (Example 1 and Example 2. KristenKP mentioned that she tends to do just the opposite - she wears her turquoise specs with complementary colors instead.

2. Red angular frames
Red is so versatile that there isn't much that I *won't* wear them with. I have used them to accentuate a red accessory or a green top, add more color near my face, or even with a red dress in a predominantly red ensemble (the last was for Hanna's Clue color theme week.)

3. Half rims
These are an older pair that you haven't seen before - they were kept in my car as "emergency driving glasses" for the past year but I am rotating them back into use. To save money, I think I will probably end up wearing the rimless frames more often instead of contacts when I want something more minimal around my face.

4. Bronze "blingy" frames
The metal frames feel a bit heavy after wearing them for a few hours and I am a little bored with the shape, so I am going to use them for now as my "emergency driving pair.

How do you select which specs to wear?

Lucky you! I wish I had a vision plan like that.

Your burgundy and turquoise frames are my favorite. Absolutely killer. I like how you play up the turquoise with accessories. It's not really the "main" color so I think it's nice to accent it a bit so it stands out more. I think I will copy you when I finally get mine.

Love the red frames. Great shape and great color for your eyes! Blue definitely looks lovely with them for the same reason your burgundy and turquoise specs look pretty. It's just a beautiful color combo.

The rimless ones I'm not sure about. I think rimless could look great on you but the shape throws me off. It just doesn't have the same "killer" factor as your other frames. I can see why they make a great minimalistic option though.

Metal frames are cute. Like the embellishment and the shape is nice, but I don't feel it does as much to enhance your features as the first two.

Well, I can't really say how I wear mine since I only have one pair. But now I feel like I really have the opportunity to choose between glasses and contacts (as opposed to before, where I felt like I HAD to wear contacts or else feel dumpy all day). I might start thinking more about using glasses as an accessory and not just something I'm forced to wear on days when I want to give my eyes a break.

I think I talked about this in a glasses thread that Maya started, but I have a similar collection to yours. I wear my half-rims when I don't want to look like I'm wearing glasses but I'm too lazy to put in my contacts. :)

Beyond that, I let the outfit dictate the glasses; the colors, the dressiness, the attitude of it, even my hair. (Good, fluffy hair days can support the thicker frames, LOL.)

I agree with Maya about your rimless ones; I'd need to see them in an outfit to really decide, but they're not quite as killer as your others.

Your new burgundy/teal ones are FAB. Looking at the pictures larger than on your blog, I can see why you wear more teal/turquoise with them; that color is definitely secondary on the glasses, and adding it somewhere else in the outfit does make it pop. Mine are more primary, so I go complementary.

My favorite is the burgundy/turquoise pair! They look awesome on you.

I'm like Maya; I only have one pair of glasses. I used to have two, but they were different prescriptions (one was a pair of reading glasses). At one point, I swapped the prescriptions, so I could wear the frames of the reading glasses as my normal ones (they were cat-eye shaped, very cute).

Like Maya, I wish my vision plan were like yours! Mine only pays for the eye exam (boo). At least having an FSA helps.

Anyhow, since I typically have only one pair at any given time, I tend to choose a generic style and color, one that matches my face/skintone rather than outfits. Kind of like eye makeup! My (hopefully) new pair (the Bevels) are also pretty neutral, a taupey brown color with a splash of red that's visible from the sides and back. I don't need to worrying about them clashing with my clothes.

I don’t match my specs to my outfits! I have four pairs and wear two pairs most of the time.

Coming back around to restate that like Angie, I don't match my glasses to my outfits, but I choose the ones that best complement it.

Also, I think you were saying elsewhere that your contacts were too expensive so you weren't going to order more of them. Was that right? Anyway, if you sign for Ebates (which is great if you do a lot of online ordering -- I've gotten several cashback checks from them already), you can order contacts online for a discount and for cashback.

They carry my contacts; I'm thinking about giving them a try when my supply runs out.

Before I praise the glasses, I have to say that you have such a pretty smile. :-)
I love the top two pairs especially the burgundy/turqoise (such unexpected color combo), because I am the plastic girl. I like my frames thick.
Your post reminds me to check what my vision insurance allows because I am overdue for a pair glasses. My current ones are still holding together, not sure for how much longer. They are bright red, and I wear them daily, and I love them deeply, but I think it is time to give them a break.

I have two pair and can't wait to get a really fashionable pair. One has a heavier brown frame that looks more modern and the older pair is completely rimless. I like to wear the rimless ones when I want to wear statement earrings. They go better with statement jewelry in general because they don't compete with it.

I do have two pairs - one is a tortoiseshell but with a cat eye frame (my "librarian glasses") and the other is a purple less defined cat eye.

Maybe I don't wear them enough because when I do opt for my glasses, everyone tells me they didn't know I needed them. I spend half the day fussing with them and hating how they feel on bridge of nose.

I really prefer the contacts and then I can wear my non-rx sunglasses.

I have tried on the square shaped frames and they just don't seem to suit me .

On you, I love option one. Nice fit. And the color seems fairly neutral so you could wear with quite a bit.

It's interesting to see how wearing glasses does (or doesn't, in some cases) influence what we wear. I know for years I felt frumpy whenever I wore glasses and really only did so on lazy days. I think that changed when I got the bright red pair, and then I started to deliberately wear them more often because they are too darn fun not to.

I'm actually not sure about the shape of the rimless frames either. It's *close* to the shape that I generally look for, but they are definitely not as great as my fun plastic frames. Anyway, I want to keep them around simply because they are very light-weight and unobtrusive, and I might get some wear out of them even if they won't be a primary pair.

I am actually okay on my contact supply - since I wear glasses half of the time now, I can make my supply last for a long time - but I guess I am thinking very frugally here. I used to have great vision insurance but starting in August I won't have any, and I'm not sure when I'll have it again. My eyes are also bothered by allergies from time to time, and removing contacts can make that less painful.

Maya, I am so glad you found a pair of specs that you feel great in. I hope you'll get a lot of wear from them.

Kristen, thanks for the Ebates tip! Costco's optical center also gives a big rebate when you buy 8 boxes at one time (on top of their already discounted price.) I'm not sure if they carry your brand?

Cathy, I think you were really smart to invest in one "killer" frame that will go with everything and suits your face so well. *grin*

After5, thanks very much! Yeah, I think it's worth checking to see whether insurance will reimburse you for some or all of a pair, even if you don't need them right away.

Joy, maybe that's why I have been scaling back on earrings since I started wearing glasses more frequently. I find that I have to be careful of how many accessories I place near my face.

Chris, that's partly why I keep contacts around. I am careful with my specs because they are on my face all day, but have a habit of dropping sunglasses, so I just buy super-cheap non-RX sunnies. Plus, I need contacts when I swim so I can wear goggles (also non-RX.)
That's too bad that your glasses frames make you feel so fussy! Can your optician adjust the frames? The optical centers where I bought my glasses would heat & bend my frames until they fit securely on my face, and it helped a lot (especially since my face is somewhat crooked.)

Ack, I must have erased my reply to Angie when I was moving text around in my comment:
Angie, even though you don't explicitly match your specs to what you wear (or vice-versa), is there anything that determines which of your fabulous frames you put on? Just what "feels right", or do you have one pair that feels more right for casual wear, others for dressier occasions? I'm just curious.
