Just saw this thread....I count myself in the minimalist camp, even though I'm a little bit of a 'forced minimalist'. Like Mo and Elly, I 1. live out of a suitcase quite a lot, and 2. do a fair amount of climate switching.
I've been doing minimalism for a couple of years now, when I moved from the US to Australia. My degree has me commute between there and Scotland, and there's no moving allowance, so everything I own (4 seasons of clothes, accessories, books, sentimental items) has to fit within airline luggage requirements. I have a guitar that gets shipped around.
I split my clothes up into 3 seasons: 'Australian summer', 'Scottish winter', and 'everything else'. Only the 3rd one is out all the time. The others get pulled out as needed.
I don't really keep a count, but initially I aimed for a balance I saw on Academichic: about 10 tees, 10 cardis, 4-5 sweaters/jumpers, 5 jackets (incl. outerwear), 4 jeans, 1 pr shorts, 5 dresses and 5 skirts.
I think my count is...1 pr. shorts (there's a couple other pairs in Oz), 4 pr. jeans (though one's about to get holes worn through), 10-11 tees, 3 cardis (feeling a pinch here), 5 pr skirts (but most are too formal for everyday use--feeling a pinch here, too), and 5 dresses (again, most not suited for every day use).
I got tripped up, because my initial wardrobe had to be overhauled completely once I got to Oz, because I lost a lot of weight. Then, when I moved to the UK, some of the weight came back (several reasons), and people are more formal here than in Oz--I actually needed a couple of formal/beaded dresses. I also found that the colourful approach at Academichic doesn't work so well for me, and am starting down the road of a more limited palette. I'm not jettisoning and replacing..I'll just be more selective as things wear out. Which they do when you're wearing the same few tees over and over.
My philosophy really boils down to dressing for the reality of my world, which is that I'll have to pack everything up in 6 months (can't wait) and carry it halfway around the world again. Not very helpful for most people, I'm afraid....
For tips, I'd say to take a good hard look at what you really need, and as others have mentioned, give one of the rule-based challenges (like 333) a go. Also look at the travel capsules on pinterest for an idea of ratios.
