Ring selection for her

Hi guys,

So, I need your advice on something. I am planning to propose to my gf, we have been in a relationship for the past 5 years, and now, I want to get married to her and spend the rest of my life happily. I have booked a romantic candle light dinner for us, and now, I need to get a beautiful ring for her. I have been checking online for good one’s, and have found this one for her,http://www.pheradiamonds.com/shop/demure/, but since I have never bought any such gift, I am really confused, I am not even sure if she would like it. I am really bad at selecting gifts. What do you guys think? Is it pretty? I want the best for her. Or, any other good one’s? Please help me out guys.

Have you talked to your lawyer and accountants already?

I would postpone the candlelight dinner and start by reviewing each other's prenup drafts over pizza. And read up on what Warren Buffett says about marriage!

P.S. Diamonds aren't the best financial choice you can make.

The ring you have selected is very pretty. My husband proposed to me and took me ring shopping, so that we could get the right size and also a style that looked good on my hands. If you do want to get the ring before proposing, why not ask the assistance of her closest friend. Enjoy this wonderful time and best of luck.

Your plan sounds romantic and special, and the ring you have chosen is a lovely design. One which I would happily wear forever. I am not your girlfriend though, and her taste may be quite different. Can you perhaps propose first and then go together to buy the ring after she gives you the 'yes'. My husband proposed at a beautiful lunch and then in the afternoon we went ring shopping. I loved the way he did it, as I ended up with a perfect ring for me. Alternatively, get some guidance from her best friend who may be able to help with logistics. The right ring is so personal. The ring you show is very pretty! That said, does the proposal (and the ring) have to be a surprise? If not, it may be better all around to go ring shopping together. It's what my husband and I did. And here we are eleven years later and I'm still wearing that set. Most people I know whose rings were a surprise upgraded a few years later.

I'm gonna agree with what's being said: it might be best to let her pick the settings stone, because that is highly personal and she'll be wearing it for a very long time.

That said, if you still want to do the dinner surprise (so sweet and romantic!), perhaps a simple promise ring or something, with the assurance that you intend to let her pick the ring?

Agreeing with the others that the ring you chose is gorgeous. However, I also agree that taking her ring shopping would be better in the long run. "Exchanging" an engagement ring is quite delicate, even if you tell her it's ok. You certainly don't want her to be stuck with something that doesn't feel like her for 40 years!

The ring is gorgeous, but I'd find out her style before surprising her with it. My husband was so cute--the first time we ever even discussed rings, we'd had our first and one of our only fights ever the eve of NY's eve. I seriously thought we were breaking up, but we quickly made up.

On NY's day, we were at the mall and as we walked by a jewelry store, he slowed down and was looking at the cases. He asked me what kind of watches I liked and then he suggested we go in. He casually walked over to the rings and we began to look although I don't think I tried any on that day...we went ring shopping a few times and then he knew what I liked and surprised me with the style.

I don't know if this is just a photo of the kind of ring you're looking at, but I highly discourage you from buying it on line. You can't tell a thing from a photo and diamonds are a big deal. I'd never trade up on my ring, as it is a true symbol for me.

It is a beautiful ring, and I am sure you have discussed with her what her jewelry style is. But even so, please make sure you have a good return period so if she doesn't like the ring you can choose something else together. Better yet, purchase the nicest stone you are willing to buy from a reputable vendor (Blue Nile, Whiteflash, Good Old Gold, James Allen, etc.) and then choose or design the setting together. That would create wonderful memories for both of you.

And although diamonds are not the best financial investment you can make, they sure do go a long way toward making many women happy! Sometimes it's about love and not purely a "financial choice."

The engagement ring needs to work with the wedding band. You may want to pick this out together and think in terms of sets. This is a lovely ring though.

She will be wearing the ring if she says yes. Or she may not want to wear an engagement ring. I think it is better is she is involved in picking out the ring. Both my husbands and I went ring shopping together. I love my rings. Not sure it would have worked out if they picked out the rings by themselves.
