Quick Thoughts on What's looking fresh for 2015

Never thought I would say this, but large flounces and ruffles are looking very fresh. So are gathered sleeves, and gathers at the sleeve crown.

And most of all, tailoring and structure looks the MOST fresh to my eye. (Do not confuse this with overly tight and previously on trend body con fits). Defining the natural waist looks completely modern. I guess I've had my fair share of slouch and mega slouch, which is becoming less appealing and has unfortunately flooded the market.

Wide pant hems with structured hips and thighs look fresh, but tailored styles with tapered legs - think J.Crew Maddie and straight leg jeans - look as fresh to me.

Anyway, I'm SO glad I did not pass on my fitted button downs and denim jackets. They are going to work very well in the next leg of my style journey, which is going to be more tailored (I generally wear my tailored looks looser than most). I need to Style Detox.

I am very happy to hear this Angie, especially the tailored part. I have embraced the slouchy and fluid, but it is not the most conventionally figure flattering look for a hourglass, so tailored sounds wonderful and a good change. I can't wait to see how is the new modern waist definition going to look like, as I plan to be fully behind it.
I will wait and see about the large flounces and ruffles though. Maybe in the small doses, but I am still suffering the ruffle overload from a couple of years ago.

Ah...ruffles! Glad to hear that they are coming back. I don't have a large chest, and ruffles on tops help fill that out.

I also do well with structured fits. Can't wait to see what the stores start carrying...I hope they follow some of these trends.

Tanya - "flounce-lite" as in the skirt part of my Tadashi Holiday look for 2014 worked for me. (Perhaps you missed that outfit?). I get what you mean by ruffle overload of six years ago though - I still feel that too - but there is a difference.

I am so excited about the idea of waist definition, and can't wait for some of these looks to come out to give me some ideas about how to achieve that. My perfect outfit would be loose top, defined waist, structured bottom so it sounds like 2015 may be my year!!

Yay! Actually I saw and loved something with large ruffles yesterday and was wondering how hopelessly out of style I am. Lol. Oversized and slouchy weren't particularly my thing, though I have and will continue to appreciate the look very much on others.

I can't wait to see more visuals. My first reaction to ruffles and flounces is a big no for myself -- but I can easily imagine enjoying them on others. I DO like a little frill at a sleeve cuff, though -- does that count? Must be the dandy in my Urban Prince....

I am totally on board with tailored fits, however. And will pull out my Reiss jacket all the more!

I am looking forward to the tailored fits, particularly in jackets. The oversized, dropped shoulder, low stance blazers and jackets recently may look cool but are incredibly difficult on my body. And even with my fluid fits (which as you know I love) I try to get a tailored fit at the shoulder.

I don't see myself going back to defining my natural waist any time soon though. It's not comfortable for me, and emphasizes my short torso too much.

And I never really gave up on ruffles and gathers, although my taste in them has definitely moved from the frilly to the more architectural.

Happy-happy to hear about more tailored looks and waist definition! I didn't purchase the fluid / slouchy / waist surrendering pieces - they just make me look like a sack of old potatoes. Thanks for this good news, Angie!

And I will enjoy seeing the ruffles and flounces on the gals who look good in them. They look awkward and overly frilly on me.

Another hooray for tailored and structure. As much as I like fluid I love tailored items that skim the body but don't cling.
Ruffles and flounces do not excite me. I've purged most of my ruffled items from the last time they were in. They feel too fussy for my current style.

I'll join you on tailored and structure. I was about to purge much of my spring tops and buttondown collection as being too fitted. Maybe I'd better take another look. Ruffles? It depends.

For as many of the loose, oversize or super-fluid knits that I have, I'm kind of over seeing the look everywhere I turn this winter. There was a woman standing behind me in an airport security lineup the other day wearing pinstripe wider leg trousers and a crisp, menswear striped shirt. The shirt was not super fitted, but was definitely tailored and tidy looking. I couldn't help looking at her thinking how nice and " clean " she looked compared to all of us in our droopy sweaters. Of course she had beautiful blonde shoulder length hair, and the shirt was unbuttoned just so, annnnnd she was nicely trim and slim, but I wanted to run home and buy a shirt.

Anyways, that's my longwinded way of saying : yes please. But no thank you to anything ruffled . Gathered is tough enough to work with .

Ah yes, I have seen that Tadahsi frock Angie, an you look gorgeous in it. I am actually eying a different, but similar one from the same designer for the spring weddings I am about to attend. That kind of flounce is pretty! I was imagining something completely different.

My eyebrows fluttered when I read your words flounces and ruffles and not in a good way. I do like the idea of tailored and structured fits, especially when I saw your J. Crew Maddie pants.

What are "gathers at the sleeve crown," Angie? Is that the little "puff" at the shoulder?

I think it's so funny that both large flounces and tailored looks are "in." In a nutshell, that shows you just how arbitrary fashion is.

I'll just keep wearing what works best on my body and feels most like me. I think what I want most is a pair of wider-leg pinstripe trousers, like the ones Lisa described. I have several tops that would work well with those!

I will do tailored. That is an easy win for most of us, and a slam dunk for an hourglass! Tailored does mean expensive though.

I will define the waist in some ways - ways that suit a short waisted busty person. I won't be adding belts to coats, but I do love a dress that defines the natural waist.

I may do ruffles and frills - I did just purge my one skirt that had a ruffle at the hem ironically - but that is good news for the thrift shop huh!! I would wear them on the right piece, possibly with ruffles on the sleeve.

Just to follow up on viva's comment, if both flounces and tailoring are "in", I wonder if what we'll see is more of the "structured" type of flounce - I'm thinking almost origami or architectural flounces rather than the really ruffly ones of a few years ago. If so, I could get really excited about that. I think an architectural ruffle could look amazing against tailoring - I want to refer to classic Balenciaga shapes as a reference, but I'm not sure I'm thinking of the correct reference.

SLOUCH is just as on trend at TAILORING. I mentioned that back in Oct when I did the initial trend report. Ruffles are part of the '70s vibe - another huge trend - or architectural. And there is no stopping Sporty Luxe. They are all happening at once. It's quite remarkable because the trends are very, very different from each other.

It's almost like fashion is having a moment of *not* having a moment. I've seen black and white graphic looks, tailored nipped waists, boho floral and suede fringe, skinny skinnies and ethnic brights all being featured for spring.

Maybe it's about just making what ever style really works for each individual into their own style...

Interesting! I thought we just had the oversize look come in, and now it will be fashionable to be tailored? (I like tailored fits, waist definition, & ruffles.)

Hmmm, it's always fine for us to try any trends we like and to go with JFE, or not conventionally flattering, but this certainly helps with the "dress the body you have" approach, if there are lots of options trending at once. Also I see options within options, you know? The tailored ruffle or the slouchy tapered structure or the structured sporty luxe or whatever.

So lots of opportunities to have your cake and eat it, too.
